Gateshead fire death: Layton Carr's school 'heartbroken'
The fire at the 15-acre site on the southern banks River Tyne was reported shortly after 20:00 BST on Friday.It erupted in a large building on the estate which has largely fallen into disrepair in recent years.
Among the tributes left by mourners at Fairfield were blue balloons in the shape of a number 14, along with flowers and messages.One note, pinned to a bunch of flowers, read: "Thank you for brightening up our lives. You will be missed beyond words."Another said Layton will "always be in our hearts".Meanwhile, more than £13,000 has been raised via a GoFundMe appeal set up for Layton's mother.
'Rally together'
In his tribute to the "tragic loss of one of our pupils", Hebburn Comprehensive headteacher David Thompson said: "Our school community is heartbroken."Layton was a valued and much-loved member of Year 9 and he will be greatly missed by everyone."We extend our sincere condolences to Layton's family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time."As a school, we will rally together to support one another through this tragedy."
People living near the industrial site said trespassing was a "regular occurrence".They also said fires were common, but what happened on Friday was "out of the ordinary".One neighbour told the BBC it was the "biggest fire" they had ever seen.In a joint statement, local councillors Amanda Wintcher, Ian Patterson and Paul Diston said they "share our community's sadness about the tragedy", adding: "Our thoughts are especially with Layton's family and friends."They said they have "been in touch with residents about concerns regarding anti-social behaviour at Fairfield industrial estate for some time" and had visited the site as recently as 30 April.
Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Susan Dungworth said: "My heartfelt condolences are with the family and friends of Layton Carr at this devastating time."I know this will have come as a shock to the Bill Quay community and I echo officer requests for anyone with information to please get in touch with Northumbria Police."Detectives confirmed the children arrested on suspicion of manslaughter were released on bail at various times over the weekend.The investigation into the fire and Layton's death continues.

Tracy Azpeitia, 17, had been on a morning run near her home when she was unexpectedly surrounded and attacked by at least 10 "large-breed dogs". Detectives have launched a probe into the horrifying incident after the teen's family said she nearly died in the terrifying mauling, on July 17. Cops have since seized 16 dogs from a property near the attack site, as the teenager's mother revealed the heartbreaking question her daughter asked after the attack. It comes after a mum was left 'traumatised' after a dog walker pushed her in canal as she cycled to work. The teenager had been walking to a workout centre in Newberry Springs, California, when the dogs pounced on her. A hero neighbour heard the young girl screaming and quickly called emergency services. The heartbroken mum also revealed the horrifying condition her daughter was left in after the terror animal attack. She told ABC7: "I thought they ripped her arms off. That's what it looked like." She added: "I didn't know who she was. She was so dirty, covered in dirt, so I couldn't recognise my daughter. I recognized her bra, that's what I recognised." Maria added that she never expected this horror attack to happen as the teen walked the same way most days. She added: "I thought she was going to be fine because she walks to her bus stop every morning. I never thought anything would happen to her." Tracy's stepdad, Carlos Ramirez, revealed the teen needed 500 stitches for the bites and cuts she received from the animals. He said: "It was not one dog or two dogs, it was a lot. I mean, they bit every part of her body you could think of except for her ankles." The teenager has been released from hospital but her parents say the 17-year-old cannot walk on her own due to her injuries. A GoFundMe page has been set up by Tracy's family to help fund her medical costs and help with her recovery. The page wrote: "She was getting ready to do her senior year of high school this year. "Now, because of this, she has to stay home and go to several doctor's appointments and rehab. Due to the trauma, she cannot sleep at night; she's having nightmares." The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department has launched a criminal investigation into the horror dog attack.

Mother who couldn't swim makes ultimate sacrifice for daughter, 9, after she fell into lake
A mother-of-four who could not swim died while trying to save her nine-year-old daughter from drowning, according to her family. Maria Elvia, 44, jumped into a lake after her daughter Clara slipped off a wet rock and fell in during a family hike at Stone Mountain Park in Atlanta, Georgia, on Saturday, police said. '[The girl] took her shoes off and then slipped into the water, and it's certainly deep there,' said John Bankhead with the Stone Mountain Police Department. 'The mother did what mothers would naturally do and jumped in after her.' The girl's brother, Elvis, then also jumped into the water and was able to pull his sister out. She was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive, as reported by Atlanta News First. The brother and Elvia's husband also tried to save her but were not able to pull her above the water. Elvia was not pulled out until a park police officer was called to the scene. She was under water for at least four minutes, per officials. Officers performed CPR before she was taken to the hospital, where she was put in the Intensive Care Unit before she died three days later. 'Maria Elvia was a devoted mother and wife who always put her family first,' a GoFundMe page for Elvia's family said. 'She cared deeply for her children and husband, and her final act was one of selfless love and courage.' The GoFundMe has raised $15,000 of its $20,000 goal as of Friday afternoon. It was created by Elvia's adult daughter Yvonne, who said the donations will be used to cover her mother's ICU costs and send her body back to her home country, as was her wish. Police said the incident remains under investigation. Stone Mountain Park offers visitors various activities including hiking and camping. The mother's drowning comes after police found a man's badly burned remains in the same park back in May. The discovery prompted an investigation and forced the park to shut down for hours. Police said at the time the body was under an overhang and somebody had piled up rocks in front of the overhang to make it very private. Days later, however, the parents of the man provided a note to police that confirmed he died by suicide. 'The note was very specific about the method and location of the planned suicide which was consistent with the death scene,' said the Stone Mountain Park Department of Public Safety.

Family set up memorial after four-year-old boy killed by bus outside hospital
Police were called to the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother (QEQM) Hospital in Margate just after 4pm on Thursday. The boy has been named as Zaahir Jan on a GoFundMe page set up by his mother, which has already raised more than £3,000. Zaahir was hit by a white single-decker Stagecoach bus near the entrance to the A&E department on Thursday afternoon. According to reports, he had been visiting his grandmother before he left the hospital on foot and the collision took place. He was taken back inside the hospital where he was pronounced dead soon after. On Friday, his mother and other family members arrived outside the hospital close to where Zaahir died. They laid blankets, flowers and sweets in tribute, as well as writing letters to him. His father, Navid Feizi, told the BBC his son was a 'sweet and charming boy' and added: 'Even when he was hurt, he was always smiling.' On the GoFundMe page, his mother wrote: 'Everyone is devastated but that word doesn't feel like enough to explain how we are all feeling. 'Our sweet funny boy with a cheeky smile that could make anyone's heart full. The smile that we can't see again. 'Can't hold him. Can't cuddle him. Can't hear him. Can't have him sleeping in my bed tonight. 'But I can try to give him the best and most comfortable burial. My baby I wish you were in my bed tonight cuddling. I love you my boy.' A spokesperson from Stagecoach said: 'We can confirm that one of our buses was involved in a tragic incident within the grounds of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital in Margate yesterday. 'Emergency services attended the scene, and a child was taken into the hospital, where they sadly passed away. 'Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the family and all those affected at this incredibly difficult time. 'We are co-operating fully with the ongoing police investigation and are ensuring that support is in place for our driver.' Investigators from Kent Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
