MLS players' union says dispute over Club World Cup compensation is ongoing
Major League Soccer and its players' union remain at odds over compensation for the players with the three MLS teams taking part in the Club World Cup.
The Seattle Sounders, LAFC and Inter Miami are the only MLS clubs among the 32 teams playing in the Club World Cup, which starts Saturday. Each team will earn $9.55 million as a club for participating in the tournament, with a chance to win additional prize money based on performance.
The Major League Soccer Players Association said Sunday that the league issued a proposal Friday that did not include any additional participation bonuses for the players and offered 'below-standard' back-end compensation. The union also said the league asked for unrelated concessions to the collective bargaining agreement.
Currently, there is a provision of the collective bargaining agreement that caps the amount of prize money that can go to players at $1 million. The MLSPA believes the players are entitled to a bigger share of the funds.
'The timing, substance and retaliatory nature of the proposal sends a clear message: MLS does not respect or value players' efforts with regard to this tournament,' the MLSPA said in statement Sunday. 'Although not surprised, the players and the MLSPA are deeply disappointed by this message.'
Major League Soccer issued a statement Sunday to clarify its position.
'As the Seattle Sounders FC, Inter Miami CF, and the Los Angeles Football Club prepare to compete in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, Major League Soccer has agreed to voluntarily provide additional performance-based compensation to players from the three participating clubs,' the league said. 'MLS has proposed an enhanced structure for the Club World Cup to reward both participation and competitive achievement in the tournament. In addition to the guaranteed $1 million per team for qualifying, 20 percent of all prize money earned from the group stage onward would be allocated to players. If an MLS club wins the Club World Cup, its players could collectively receive more than $24 million in performance bonuses.'
The statement went on to say that MLS owners believe that performance-based incentives are appropriate given the expanded format and increased prize pool for the tournament.
'The League values the continued dedication and commitment of its players and looks forward to supporting them as they represent their clubs — and Major League Soccer — on the global stage this summer.'
The talks between the two sides were ongoing.

Last weekend, the Seattle Sounders called attention to the issue by wearing T-shirts before a match that read 'Club World Cup Ca$h Grab.' On Sunday, a number of players posted the hashtag #FairShareNow, including Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei and LAFC center back Aaron Long.
'The players remain unified in using their collective voice and demanding a fair share of the rewards earned from their hard work,' the union said.
The Club World Cup features an expanded field of club teams from around the globe and will be played across 11 U.S. cities.

Resilient Vancouver Whitecaps blank nine-man Seattle Sounders 3-0 to set club record
VANCOUVER – The Vancouver Whitecaps overcame a string of adversity to blank their regional rivals, the Seattle Sounders, 3-0 on Sunday. The result extended the 'Caps (10-1-5) unbeaten streak in Major League Soccer play to a club record 11 games. Homegrown talent Jeevan Badwal notched his first MLS goal in the 40th minute, Mexican striker Daniel Rios scored to cushion the lead in the 70th, and veteran striker Damir Kreilach put away a penalty kick in the 88th. Goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka recorded his eighth clean sheet of the season. The Sounders (7-6-5) went down to nine men early in the second half following a pair of red cards. Seven of Vancouver's 11 starters were listed as questionable for the game after about half of the team came down with a gastrointestinal illness following the CONCACAF Champions Cup final in Mexico City on June 1. The 'Caps were also without nine additional players who have been called up to their national teams, and star attacking midfielder Ryan Gauld, who remains sidelined with a knee injury. Vancouver signed seven Whitecaps FC 2 players to short-term agreements Sunday to bolster their ranks. Six of the players were on the bench at the start of Sunday's game, including central midfielders Jackson Castro and Antoine Coupland, centre back Adrian Pelayo, left back Daniel Russo, right back Nikola Djordjevic and striker John Selemani. The visitors came close to opening the scoring in the 31st minute when midfielder Pedro de la Vega sent a ball skittering along the turf from the top of the penalty area. His shot appeared to deflect off the leg of a Whitecaps defender and sail just wide of the far post. Nine minutes later, a 'Caps rookie got his side on the board. Wing back Edier Ocampo sliced a ball to J.C. Ngando at the top of the six-yard box and he ticked it on to Badwal. The 19-year-old Whitecaps academy product from Surrey, B.C., stuck out his right leg just in time to redirect the ball in past Seattle 'keeper Stefan Frei to make it 1-0. The Sounders controlled 65.1 per cent of possession across the first half and held a 6-5 edge in shots, but the Whitecaps registered the lone on-target shot. Vancouver came into the second half with renewed energy and pressed to create chances. Seattle appeared to get frustrated and the emotions boiled over in the 52nd minute when wing back Nouhou grabbed his Vancouver counterpart Mathias Laborda around the neck and hauled him down as Laborda charged toward the Sounders net. Referee Ricardo Fierro pulled the red card from his pocket, leaving the visitors with 10 men. The 'Caps briefly appeared to double their lead in the 53rd minute when centre back Bjorn Utvik booted a shot in off a corner kick. The goal was quickly called off because Vancouver defender Ranko Veselinovic made contact with Frei as he leapt for a header, hauling the goaltender down and impeding his ability to stop Utvik's shot. Seattle ran into more trouble in the 55th minute when centre back Jonathan Bell made contact with Priso as he charged up the field. Fierro once again pulled out the red card. The Sounders players argued the call, but Bell soon walked off to the locker rooms, leaving Seattle with just nine players on the pitch. Rios boosted Vancouver's lead to 2-0 in the 70th minute, collecting a pass from Priso at the top of the penalty area and firing a right-footed shot in from the top of the penalty area for his second goal of the season. Ocampo had a prime chance to make it 3-0 in the 73rd minute. In alone, the wing back twisted to blast a jumping right-footed shot on target, but Frei dove to punch the ball away. Priso, too, had a chance in the 76th minute with a high shot that appeared poised to sneak in below the crossbar. But the Seattle netminder leapt up and touched it over to keep the score 2-0. Pacers fail to sweep Games 1 and 2 in a series for the first time in these playoffs
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — For the Indiana Pacers, a chance at being perfect in Games 1 and 2 of these playoffs went awry. They'll have to settle for a mere split of the opening two games in the NBA Finals instead. The Pacers' bid to become the fifth team in NBA history to go 8-0 to open the four playoff rounds — sweeping Games 1 and 2 in all four series — was stopped on Sunday night by the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder took control early and won Game 2 123-107, tying the championship matchup at a game apiece. The Pacers were trying to join the 1986 Boston Celtics, 1987 Los Angeles Lakers, 1996 Chicago Bulls and 2017 Golden State Warriors as teams that won Games 1 and 2 in all four rounds of a single postseason. All four went on to win the NBA title. Those teams all did it with home-court advantage in every one of those series. The Pacers haven't had home court since Round 1 — taking the first two of that series against Milwaukee, then winning the first two of Round 2 at Cleveland, the first two of the Eastern Conference final at New York, and Game 1 of the finals in Oklahoma City. So, in the end, the Pacers have to settle for going 7-1, tying for the fifth-best record in Games 1 and 2 in a single postseason. They also became the third team to win five of those games on the road in a playoff run. We've got to keep our eye firmly where it needs to be.' If the Pacers had won Sunday, they likely would have been overwhelming favorites heading home with a 2-0 lead. Only two teams — the 1993 Chicago Bulls and 1995 Houston Rockets — won the first two games of a finals on the road, and both went on to win the NBA title in those seasons.
