San Diego FC bans 33 from all matches after violent brawls in stadium stands during LA Galaxy visit

San Diego FC has issued indefinite bans to 33 people who apparently participated in a violent brawl after the club's match against the LA Galaxy at Snapdragon Stadium last weekend. The expansion San Diego club announced Friday that the fans are prohibited from attending home and away matches. The club will work with law enforcement and Major League Soccer to enforce the bans, and further action could be taken. 'The behavior exhibited by these individuals is entirely unacceptable and does not reflect who we are as a club,' San Diego FC said in a statement. 'We seek to create matchdays that are safe, welcoming and respectful environments for all fans. Snapdragon Stadium officials have assured us that they will enhance security protocols to ensure safety at stadium events.' A prolonged, vicious brawl broke out in the stands following San Diego's dramatic 2-1 victory over the Galaxy on May 24. Much of the fighting was particularly dangerous because it occurred in the front row of the upper deck of the Snapdragon stands, with some of the combatants coming perilously close to tumbling over the railing. Even more fights occurred later in the stadium's parking lots, according to fans who posted video on social media. 'We want an atmosphere that is passionate, inclusive, and secure – where everyone in San Diego feels proud to come together as one community to celebrate the game we love,' the club statement continued. 'There is no place for violence in our sport.' The brawls were yet another chapter of dismaying fan behavior during San Diego's inaugural season, which has been a big success on the field. The club currently sits second in MLS' Western Conference at 8-5-3. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Fights also broke out at Snapdragon in April when Los Angeles FC visited, with social media video showing men with their faces covered fighting each other, police officers and security guards. San Diego FC's inaugural home match on March 1 was marred by three occurrences of the infamous homophobic chant frequently heard at the Mexican national team's soccer matches. The club condemned the chants and implored fans to stop. San Diego hosts Austin FC on Saturday. ___ AP soccer:

Argentine court declares a mistrial in the case over the death of soccer star Maradona

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — An Argentine court on Thursday declared a mistrial in the case of seven health professionals accused of negligence in the death of soccer legend Diego Maradona, the latest dramatic twist in a trial that has captivated the nation and the soccer world for more than two months. The whiplash decision comes after one of the three judges overseeing the trial stepped down over criticism surrounding her participation in a forthcoming documentary about the case. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Her withdrawal compelled the court to either appoint a new judge in her place or to retry the entire case from scratch. On Thursday, the judges decided the latter, effectively turning the clock back on all proceedings in the case that accuses Maradona's medical team of failing to provide adequate care for the soccer star in his final days.

Reigning Stanley Cup champion Panthers get second shot at closing out Hurricanes in Eastern final

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The Florida Panthers missed on their first chance to eliminate the Carolina Hurricanes and return to the Stanley Cup Final for the third straight year. Closing out a playoff series isn't easy, even for the reigning Cup champions. The Panthers are just 4-7 in series-clinching games over the past two seasons entering Wednesday night's visit to Carolina for Game 5 of the Eastern Conference final. That includes Monday's 3-0 home loss with a chance to sweep the Hurricanes in this round for the second time in three seasons. Florida is 1-2 in closeout games this year, losing at home to Toronto in Game 6 of a second-round series before winning Game 7 on the road. It is trying to become the ninth franchises in NHL history to reach the Stanley Cup Final in three or more consecutive seasons. The Hurricanes' season-extending win in Game 4 ended a 15-game losing streak in a conference final, a run going back to sweeps in 2009, 2019 and the 2023 loss to Florida. Trailing 3-1 in this best-of-seven series, Carolina had tied for the NHL lead with 31 regular-season home wins, then went 5-0 in two playoff rounds. But Florida won Games 1 and 2 in Raleigh by a combined 10-2 score, earning its fourth consecutive road win of this postseason and seventh overall. FedEx Cup finale at East Lake goes to a 72-hole shootout where everyone starts from scratch

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — The PGA Tour voted to overhaul the season-ending Tour Championship so that all 30 players start from scratch and the low score on a tougher East Lake course wins the FedEx Cup. The change is effective this year, with more tweaks still in the works. The announcement Tuesday evening followed a PGA Tour board vote and a meeting of the Player Advisory Council that has been trying for more than six months to find a solution. The primary goal was to get rid of the staggered start that none of the players seemed to like. Since 2019, the leader of the FedEx Cup going to East Lake started at 10-under par before the tournament even began. That gave him a two-shot lead over the No. 2 player, and a staggered from there until the last five players who qualified for the 30-man field were at even par. Now it will effectively be a 72-hole shootout — everyone starts at even par, just like any other tournament — with FedEx Cup going to the winner. Still to be announced is the prize fund. Scottie Scheffler received a $25 million bonus for winning the FedEx Cup last year. The tour indicated the bonus money would be distributed more evenly to account for all 30 players — regardless of their position — have the same chance of winning. Another key to the changes is East Lake, with players wanting the strongest test possible to decide the FedEx Cup champion. ___ AP golf:

Suspect in fatal knife attack at German festival admits killings as trial starts

BERLIN (AP) — The suspect in a knife attack at a festival in the German city of Solingen went on trial Tuesday on murder and terrorism charges, and acknowledged his guilt as the proceedings opened. Three people were killed in the Aug. 23 attack at a 'Festival of Diversity' marking the 650th anniversary of the city in western Germany. The Syrian man, who has been identified only as Issa Al H. in line with German privacy rules, was arrested a day after the attack. He is charged with three counts of murder, 10 counts of attempted murder and membership in a foreign terrorist organization, the Islamic State group, in the trial at the state court in Duesseldorf. There are no formal pleas in the German legal system. However, the suspect admitted responsibility for the attack in a statement read by his lawyers, German news agency dpa reported. 'I have brought severe guilt upon myself. I am prepared to accept the verdict,' he said. 'I killed innocent people, not infidels.' The Solingen incident was one of several deadly attacks in the months leading up to Germany's national election in February that involved immigrant suspects, pushing migration to the forefront of the political agenda in that vote. It highlighted problems with returning rejected asylum-seekers to the first country where they entered the European Union, as is supposed to happen under EU rules. The suspect was supposed to be deported to Bulgaria in 2023 but reportedly disappeared for a time and avoided expulsion.
