Trump's AUKUS review delayed for months as the US uses its review as leverage for Australia to hike defence spending

Donald Trump's review of the AUKUS agreement has been delayed until later this year as the United States uses its review as leverage against the Albanese government. US secretary of defence Peter Hegseth has revealed the Trump Administration anticipates the review of AUKUS - between the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom - will be completed in the northern autumn. Mr Hegseth's update comes as the review was originally meant to last just one month. 'The Department (of Defence) anticipates completing the review in the fall,' Mr Hegseth's statement reads. 'Its purpose will be to provide the President and his senior leadership team with a fact-based rigorous assessment of the initiative.' Liberal Senator Jane Hume said the update was 'very good news' and created an opportunity for the Prime Minister to secure a face-to-face meeting with Trump. 'It gives the government an opportunity to not just meet with the President personally … but most importantly to put in place demonstrations and real-life case studies of how we can work with the US better in this very important strategic alliance,' Ms Hume told Sky News. 'So we get a chance to demonstrate our commitment to AUKUS as well as have the US see the benefits of that for their economy (and) for their defence.' The US review of AUKUS will be delayed for several months. Picture: ADF The Pentagon publicly announced a review of the AUKUS alliance in June in a dramatic move that put into doubt Australia's defence future. Sky News' Sharri Markson in June reported the Trump Administration was using its review as leverage to force Labor to increase defence spending. The US has demanded Australia lift its defence spending to almost $100b a year amid tensions in the Indo-Pacific region. Australia's defence spending currently sits at about two per cent of GDP and a bump in line with the US call would lift it to 3.5 per cent. Senior national security sources, on the condition of confidentiality, told Sky News that Australia should have been proactive on the defence budget, particularly after Europe signed up to a 3.5 per cent target. The Trump Administration has urged Australia to increase defence spending. Picture:Australia's position to keep defence spending at just under 2 per cent is considered unsustainable in the current strategic environment, which even the Albanese government acknowledges is the most volatile in recent history. The Trump administration gave Australia time and space on the issue of defence spending to avoid interfering with the May federal election. They were also waiting to see the outcome before pressing ahead with negotiations. But confidential sources said the Trump administration 'is extremely serious' about needing Australia to lift its game on defence spending, irrespective of budget constraints.

‘You're rewarding Hamas': Donald Trump on Keir Starmer's Palestinian recognition move

US President Donald Trump has weighed in on UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's move on Palestinian state recognition. Mr Starmer has told his cabinet the United Kingdom will recognise a Palestinian state unless Israel takes significant steps towards relieving the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and reaches a ceasefire. 'You could make the case that you're rewarding people, you're rewarding Hamas if you do that, and I don't think they should be rewarded, so I'm not in that camp,' President Trump told reporters on Tuesday, local time.
