Heartbreak as young GAA star dies in 'tragic accident'
The fatal single-vehicle collision happened on the M8 Southbound, at Upper Riverstown in Glanmire just before 7am on Wednesday. The victim has been named locally as Billy O'Grady from North Cork, who was aged in his 20s.
Heartbreaking tributes are being paid by GAA clubs and the wider community, remembering him as a "true friend", a "vital part" of his club and a person of "great character".
His club Shanballymore GAA has led tributes to the young hurler by sharing a collection of photos on social media. They wrote: "It is with deep sadness and sorrow that Shanballymore GAA have learnt of the untimely passing of club player and friend Billy. A young man of great character and presence who was a credit to his family and our club.
"Our condolences go to his parents John and Caroline, siblings Jordon, Kelly and Ollie, girlfriend Chloe, extended family members, friends and all those in the Shanballymore community. Our focus remains on remembering Billy as a player, friend, and clubmate and supporting his family over this most difficult time in their lives.
"As a mark of respect to the O Grady and Butler families, all activities in Shanballymore GAA grounds are paused and the walkway will remain closed until further notice. Ar dheis se go raibh a anam."

They said: "Today we learned with great sadness the heartbreaking news that we've lost one of our former players, Billy O'Grady, in a tragic accident. This is a terrible shock for all of us. Billy was more than just a player; he was a friend and a vital part of our club family.
"We will truly miss his presence and his dedication. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time. We will let you know about any arrangements once we have. Attached find a few memories. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."
Gardai continue to appeal for witnesses to yesterday's crash to contact them. A Garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a fatal single vehicle road traffic collision that occurred at approximately 6:50 am Wednesday 20th August 2025 on the M8 (J18) road Southbound, Upper Riverstown, Glanmire, Co Cork.
"A man, aged in his 20s, was brought by ambulance to Cork University Hospital. He was pronounced deceased on Wednesday afternoon.
"Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 6:40 am and 7:15 am this morning are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
"Anyone with information is asked to contact Mayfield Garda Station on 021 4558510 the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station. Investigations are ongoing."

Temple bar thug kicked English tourist he didn't know in the face
Gardaí are confident they will track down the thug who left an English tourist in a critical condition in an incident in Dublin's Temple Bar. The UK citizen, who was visiting Ireland on holiday, is believed to have gotten into an altercation with an Irish man who he doesn't know near the Centra in Temple Bar Square in the early hours of Thursday morning. Now it has emerged that the attacker brutally kicked the tourist, who is in his 40s, in the face and chest - knocking him to the ground. Sources say the victim then fell backwards and onto the concrete after the attack by a man who was not known to him. The attacker, who did not remain at the scene, is understood to have been identified by investigating officers - after clear CCTV footage was obtained. He remains at large - but investigators are confident of finding him. The victim was rushed to Dublin's Beaumont Hospital, where he is being treated for head injuries - and his condition was being described as critical. The Irish Mirror has since learned that his condition has stabilised following surgery and it is hoped that he will continue to recover. His condition, however, remains critical, sources say, and his recovery will take time. Gardaí are understood to have one suspect for this attack - and have already garnered good-quality CCTV of the incident. In a statement, Gardaí said that officers in Pearse Street are appealing for witnesses in relation to a serious assault that occurred in the Temple Bar Square area of Dublin 2 in the early hours of this morning, 21 August. "Gardaí and emergency services responded to the incident at approximately 12.30am. A man, aged in his 40s, was taken to Beaumont Hospital where he remains in a critical condition," a Garda spokesperson said. "The scene was preserved and a technical examination has been completed. Last weekend's unforgettable sold-out Oasis gigs at Croke Park will net the GAA a multi-million euro bonanza. It is estimated that the Manchester band's two nights at GAA HQ were worth around €10m to the local economy, with Digital bank Revolut reporting a 9pc jump in spending by its customers in Dublin compared to the previous weekend. And, for the rental of Croke Park for last Saturday and Sunday, the GAA is in line for €2m plus in revenue. The new LED system will debut at the NFL Global Series game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings at the Jones's Road venue - the first-ever NFL game to be held in Ireland. Two men arrested after seizure of over €100,000 of cannabis and cocaine
Gardaí arrested two men in connection with the seizure of over €100,000 worth of cannabis and cocaine and €63,000 in cash. As part of an operation targeting an organised crime group involved in the sale and supply of controlled drugs and money-laundering activities in Dublin, the Dublin Crime Response Team (DCRT) searched two residential properties in DMR (Dublin Metropolitan Region) North and DMR West and a vehicle in DMR West. These searches resulted in the seizure of €63,000 in cash. A man aged in his 40s was arrested and is being detained at a Garda station in Dublin under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. In a follow-up operation in Finglas on the same day, cannabis and cocaine with an estimated street value of €101,000 (subject to analysis) was seized. Cash was also seized A second man, also in his 40s, was arrested and is being detained at a Garda station in Dublin under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996. Gardaí said that the drugs seized have been sent to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis and investigations are ongoing. Commenting on the investigation, Assistant Commissioner Paul Cleary said: "The significant seizures of cash and drugs and the arrest of those involved during this operation, greatly reduces the ability of this crime group to do harm in our communities. 'An Garda Síochána will continue to pro-actively target those who intend on committing serious crime and ensure they are brought before the courts.'
