Ellen Pompeo on why she won't ever leave 'Grey's Anatomy, "Everyone will profit...except me"
Ellen Pompeo is finally breaking down why walking away from Grey's Anatomy completely was never an option, for her heart or her bank account.
In a new interview with Spanish publication El País, Pompeo explained that even though she stepped down as a full-time cast member after Season 19 (which aired in 2022), she's stayed close to the series with voiceovers and occasional appearances for a reason: quitting entirely just wouldn't make sense.
'The show was streamed more than a billion times in 2024 – more than a billion times,' the actress emphasized.
Pompeo, now 55, didn't hold back about the financial imbalance she sees behind the scenes.
'The companies that own the show and stream the show make a lot of money from our images and our voices and our faces,' she said. 'If I were to walk away completely, everybody gets to make money from my hard work for 20 years and I wouldn't make any money.'
Known for playing Dr. Meredith Grey for two decades, Pompeo also serves as an executive producer.
And she knows exactly what her continued presence means to fans and the franchise alike.
'To me, it doesn't make any sense that everybody else gets to profit off of my hard work,' she told El País.
'And emotionally, the show means a lot to people. I want to have an attitude of gratitude toward the show.'
Outside the hospital scrubs, Pompeo has also been exploring darker, more complex roles—like her portrayal of Kristine Barnett in Hulu's Good American Family.
'Well, this is a limited series, so I won't appear as this character again,' she confirmed.
'I was just looking for something that was very different from Meredith Grey, and this offer presented itself.'
Still, no matter what new projects come her way, Pompeo is keeping one foot firmly planted in the Grey's universe—because walking away entirely would mean everyone wins but her.

Benny Blanco dreaming of kids with Selena Gomez amid health challenges
Music producer Benny Blanco has opened up about his desire to start a family with partner Selena Gomez, even as the couple keeps wedding plans private. In a recent InStyle interview, Blanco said he's 'dreaming and praying' about becoming a father. 'I love kids; I love being an uncle. I want to be a dad, though, God willing,' he shared. Gomez has previously spoken candidly about her challenges with motherhood. In a Vanity Fair interview, she revealed she is unable to carry children due to medical complications stemming from lupus and bipolar disorder. Pregnancy could pose serious risks to her health and the baby's. 'That was something I had to grieve for a while,' she admitted. Still, Gomez remains determined to become a mother, considering adoption and surrogacy as meaningful alternatives. Her own mother was adopted, a fact she's called a 'blessing' in their family. Despite medical challenges, the couple is building a future together—starting with their $35 million Spanish-style estate in Beverly Hills, which Blanco has been filling with 'creativity and heart.' 'I love making a house my own,' he said, emphasizing the importance of comfort and authenticity. Blanco also reflected on his emotional growth, shaped by his upbringing with a single mother. He credits her with helping him understand women's emotional needs. 'A woman will tell you exactly what she needs,' he noted, emphasizing the value of listening and mutual respect. Reflecting on past relationships, he added that learning through trial and error taught him what not to do—and ultimately led him to Gomez.

Ellen Pompeo detained by TSA after snack triggers bomb squad response at airport
Actress Ellen Pompeo was recently detained by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at an airport after a bag of organic sunflower seeds she was carrying triggered a security alert. In an interview with Travel + Leisure published May 29, the Grey's Anatomy star said she was held for nearly an hour after TSA agents—and even a bomb squad—responded to the snack she brought from Erewhon, a high-end Los Angeles grocery store. "I had a bag of sunflower seeds, like organic sunflower seeds from Erewhon, so they were probably the most expensive sunflower seeds money can buy," Pompeo explained. 'They literally held me for an hour, and they brought the bomb squad in.' Pompeo said she was shocked by the response and offered to simply throw the seeds away. However, security officials insisted she remain while they examined the unopened package. "They said it was most likely a chemical on the packaging of these super expensive, fancy, organic, clean sunflower seeds,' she recalled. 'My protein on the plane!' The 55-year-old actress added that the delay nearly caused her to miss her flight, texting her publicist during the ordeal: "I might not get on this plane, and you're never gonna guess why." While the airport incident was unexpected, Pompeo noted it's not the first time her health-focused lifestyle has sparked outside attention. In a February interview with People, she opened up about earlier in her career when her thin appearance led to speculation that she had an eating disorder. "There was so much negative attention," she said. "I just had so much anxiety and lacked self-esteem because people were so critical of my physicality."
