From Alam Khan to Rumi Harish, new book 'The Call of Music' documents stories of eight Hindustani musicians
Written by Hindustani vocalist Priya Purushothaman, the book explores the personal journeys of dedicated music practitioners, offering readers a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process of music-making while also shedding light on the pervasive influence of social class within the realm of classical music.
It is published by Hachette India.
"I wondered about all the stories I wouldn't get to hear or read, out of sheer lack of access or documentation.
This compelled me to seek these individuals and see if they would give me the privilege of sharing a slice of their lives, coming together as something akin to an ethnographic survey of select Hindustani musicians in the twenty-first century," Purushothaman, who also authored "Living Music: Conversations with Pandit Dinkar Kaikini", said in a statement.
From the narrow lanes of Kashipur to the sweeping hills of San Rafael, the artists profiled in the book emerge from vastly different worlds.
Yet, each has devoted their life to music with "unflinching conviction and artistic courage".

In Chandigarh, prepping for her show Ragini opens up about her struggles and how it took her almost six years to come up with her album. 'The song Lamberghini happened by chance. The Doorbeens, the band, touched base with me after watching all the musical reels I had shared on social media, and they lived just four houses away from us in Delhi! We got together, and the song was recorded in a cubicle lined with five thermocol pieces!' tells Ragini, who recorded the track and left for the UK to pursue a course in Human Resource Management. Back home, the track went viral, and Ragini knew this was it – 'I packed my bags, moved to Mumbai.' Trained in Hindustani classical, Ragini's ultimate dream has always been to be a playback singer, just like her favourite, Sunidhi Chauhan. 'I didn't want to become an independent artist, but the last six years have pulled me in that direction. While I did try for films and projects took their time to take off, the idea of creating something of my own, collaborating resonated with me. There was scope for growth here, and these six years have been exactly that – finding myself as an artist.' Chasing Light is the result of this 'search for the self, which she and her brother, Shiv Tandan undertook'. Shiv, who is the lyricist of cult favourites Dooron Dooron and Botalaan (Paresh Pahuja), and the director behind the Voice Notes concert series, has collaborated on the album, and delivered a rich lyrical storytelling to the five tracks. 'From love, loss to self-discovery, each track charts a different emotional landscape. Take for instance Roobaroo, an anthem of awakening, while Bolo Na dances through the absurdities of daily life, as Ragini navigates the madness of Mumbai. Chhaddo, which is her favorite, is heartbreak and acceptance, while Tabaahi is catharsis. Finally, Subah is a graceful goodbye,' adds Shiv. Recently, Yo Yo Honey Singh mentioned Lamberghini as a beautiful track in an interview, and praised the singer. 'That was out of the blue,' smiles Ragini, the 'soul singer looking to make meaningful connections with her audience through her music'.

How Mahesh Kale is taking his well-curated abhang shows to the younger audience
Abhangs, which have always been popular in Maharashtra, have now gained a pan-Indian appeal. Among the organisations that present abhang concerts, Pancham Nishad stands out for organising multi-city abhang festival every year, featuring well-known Maharashtrian and non-Maharashtrian singers. A relatively new entrant to the abhang scene is the U.S.-based Hindustani vocalist, Mahesh Kale. 'Tired of waiting to be invited to perform', he decided to organise his own well-curated abhang shows in India. Titled 'Abhangwari', they were held in eight cities this year. With a Masters in Management and Engineering, Mahesh brings a carefully-crafted strategy to his music. Apart from the judiciously planned content, he adds a visual dimension to his abhang concerts to capture the younger audience. Interesting narratives 'These elements help build the mood. If you can create a visual sense of the music, why not? By adding interesting narrative to the visuals depicting varkaris (pilgrims) marching to Pandharpur, I try to lend an extra dimension to the singing and convey the essence of these devotional songs. In Delhi, Mahesh chose the Bharat Mandapam auditorium for his Abhangwari concert. Unlike the usual set up, strobe lights lit up the space while mist created a haze on the stage. The huge line-up of accompanying instruments including flute, violin, harmonium, tabla, pakhawaj and dholak heightened the experience. 'Youngsters are used to heavy background sound and I am trying that in classical music.' All the artistes were attired in white to create a serene and spiritual ambience for an abhang concert. Mahesh started his concert with the chant 'Jai Jai Ram Krishna Hari', which set the tone for the evening. The audience too joined in. They chanted along and kept beat by clapping. In the process, building up the musical tempo, and finally reaching a crescendo. A trained classical musician (he is a disciple of Pt. Jitendra Abhisheki) Mahesh composed this piece in raag Kalyan/Aiman. Mahesh kept his singing simple and did not attempt to show off his virtuosity as a singer. The aim was to inspire devotion and instil peace in the listener. Some songs were fast-paced, and the variety of the presentation was laudable. After the concert, Mahesh revealed some of the compositions were his own while some others were tuned by his guru. An unusual bhajan in Hindi, was composed by the award-winning film composer, Narendra Bhide. This was Mahesh's way of showing that music is beyond language barriers.
