Cup win 'very important' in Cardiff's journey

BBC News16 hours ago
Brian Barry-Murphy says Cardiff City's win over Swindon Town in the EFL Cup was "very important" as his side continue to impress in the early stages of the manager's tenure.Goals from Welsh duo Cian Ashford and Rubin Colwill earned the Bluebirds a 2-1 victory over Ian Holloway's side in the Welsh capital as Cardiff progressed into the second round of the competition."I'm really pleased. It means a lot to me to get through to the next round and see who we could possibly take on," Barry-Murphy said."To win tonight was very important and we treated the game very seriously. I thought that reflected in our performance, so I was happy."Barry-Murphy kept faith with six players from the side that started the drab 0-0 draw with Port Vale five days earlier. And the Irishman says his unbeaten side can continue to improve as his players have more time to adapt to his methods."We're in the very early stages of working together. We've only trained for 25 days so that's a very small period of time in terms of trying to build something together," added Barry-Murphy."The players who came in came in based on how well they've trained and how they've been to starting the other games."We felt it was as competitive as the team at Port Vale, and luckily for us the performance, luckily for us, was better than Port Vale."I'm aware of so much more that we need to do as we move forward, but if we have that patience and understanding of where the players are at, I think we'll be fine."

Chelsea legend John Terry gives up dream of becoming a manager and is ‘baffled' at some people getting top jobs

CHELSEA icon John Terry has given up pursuing a career as a manager. The former Blues captain, 44, last worked full-time in a coaching capacity with Dean Smith for a short spell in the Leicester dugout two years ago. 4 Terry had been Smith's assistant at Aston Villa, where he helped them win promotion via the play-offs to the Premier League in 2019. The ex-England skipper has since been interviewed by Newcastle and some League One clubs. But the process puts him off, and he is 'baffled' when he sees some coaches who do land work. He told SunSport: 'I'm done in terms of coaching. I'm enjoying my life, I'm working in the Chelsea academy. 'My role's a part-time role, I love working with the kids, I love passing on my knowledge and experience to those boys.' Terry — who won five Prem titles in his playing days at Chelsea, as well as five FA Cups, three League Cups, a Champions League and a Europa League — added: 'I don't really coach at the moment, I'm a mentor, ambassador. 'I went for a couple of jobs and those days are gone for me. I'm enjoying my life a little bit, I've got my time to myself, I play a bit of golf, I'm in the academy and I have some family time as well. 'It's a really good balance for me.' 4 Terry finished his playing career with Villa in 2018 and focus quickly switched to becoming a coach. Despite being content with his role at Chelsea, Terry says there is still frustration that he did not get a chance to be a manager anywhere. Fans spot Liam Delap's reaction on bench after Joao Pedro goal as Chelsea fans say 'this guy can't catch a break' He said: 'I absolutely wanted it. When I went into Villa I got great experience under Dean Smith and we got promotion, which was incredible. 'As an assistant coach in the Premier League and the experience I've had as a player and an individual captain in both Chelsea and England, I thought that would be enough to get me a job. 'I'm not saying a job in the Premier League or the Championship — but a job at League One level. 'I didn't even get a sniff. I had interviews and it was just 'you have no experience'. 'When I see some people managing today, it baffles me, it really does. 'In terms of 'am I frustrated', yes, absolutely because I have a lot of good attributes to be a really good coach or a really good manager but, unfortunately, that's not happened.'

'There is a lot to be happy with'

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank, speaking to TNT Sports after defeat to Paris St-Germain in the Uefa Super Cup: "I think we played a very good game against one of the best teams in the world, maybe the best at this moment in time. We had them exactly where we wanted them for 80-something minutes until the 2-1 goal, then of course the momentum shifted a little bit."The team, the players, the club, the fans, there is a lot to be happy with. It is a flip of the coin when you go to a penalty shootout."We showed that we can be adaptable and pragmatic, and we needed to be against a team like PSG. The way we wanted to defend, high pressure and low defending, was top, almost perfect, and also the set pieces were very good and dangerous."On set- pieces: "It is key. For any team it should be a weapon in my opinion. We will definitely be focusing on it because I think it is a key area. At times I think we showed that we can play up against any team in the world. That is a positive I will take away from this."On further transfer business: "We'd like to strengthen the squad. No doubt about that. We do work very hard to see if we can do that. In general I am very happy with the squad but in any transfer window we try to see if we can make the squad stronger before the window closes."On facing Burnley in their Premier League opener on Saturday: "It is a short turnaround, there will be disappointment in the next 24 hours and when I wake up tomorrow, but tomorrow afternoon we will be ready, and Friday we will be more ready. And we will make sure we come flying out on Saturday."
