MACC: Company director nabbed in expedited citizenship case

The Star10-05-2025

KUALA LUMPUR: A company director has been detained by graft busters over a corruption case linked to the expedited processing of citizenship confirmation applications.
The suspect, in his 50s, has been remanded until Sunday (May 11).
The remand order was granted by Magistrate Datin Kunasundary Marimuthu at the Putrajaya Magistrate's Court on Friday (May 9).
Sources said the suspect was detained at 4.55pm on Thursday (May 8) when he was at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters giving his statement.
"The suspect is believed to have conspired with several other individuals to give bribes between RM1,000 and RM30,000 to an officer of a department, for every citizenship application since 2023.
"The bribes were meant to expedite the applications of foreigners in obtaining Malaysian citizenship without going through proper procedures," sources said.
Meanwhile, when contacted, MACC senior director (Intelligence division) Datuk Idris Zaharudin confirmed the arrest and said the case was being investigated under Section 17 of the MACC Act 2009.
"The latest arrest was made following Ops Fastlane 1.0 and Ops Outlander conducted since March 11, involving a syndicate, which bribed government officers to expedite citizenship application process," he said.
Earlier, three individuals, including two senior Home Ministry officers, who were detained over the same case, have been released on bail after their statements were taken, sources said.
Sources said among those detained were a man with a Datuk title, who served in the ministry and a woman who worked as a secretary.
"They were not remanded but released on MACC bail after giving their statements.
"However, they can be called up again to assist the investigation if needed," sources said.
It was reported that two Home Ministry officers have been detained over a corruption case linked to the expedited processing of citizenship confirmation applications.
A civilian was also arrested during an operation in Putrajaya, the MACC has confirmed.
The three individuals, aged between 50 and 65, were arrested between 1pm and 5pm on Wednesday, following information received on the case.
'This operation is a continuation of MACC's recent Ops Outlander and the Home Ministry has extended its full cooperation,' the statement said.
All three suspects are now getting their statements recorded at the MACC headquarters.
Under Ops Outlander and Ops Birth, the MACC arrested 16 people, with ages ranging from 20s to 70s, on March 11.
They were suspected of involvement in corruption related to the late registration of births for non-citizens as citizens, and birth registrations using forged supporting documents.

Singaporean man arrested in Johor for alleged involvement in road rage incident

JOHOR BARU: The Malaysian police have arrested a Singaporean man after he was allegedly involved in a road rage incident in Johor on June 7. The 40-year-old man was arrested at 6.20pm on June 8 by a team of officers from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Johor Baru North police headquarters. The police also seized several items, said Johor Baru North police chief Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh in a June 8 statement. Balveer said a 31-year-old Malaysian man had lodged a police report over the June 7 incident, claiming that on that day, he was honkedAT by a Singapore-registered Toyota Altis car. He said the Singaporean was dissatisfied that the man's BMW had allegedly blocked his path in the Taman Tun Aminah area. 'An argument took place and the suspect allegedly kicked the complainant's car, causing damage. However, the complainant did not suffer any injuries,' he said. Videos of the incident went viral on social media. Mr Balveer said checks on the Singaporean revealed that he has no prior criminal record, and that he tested negative for drugs. The Singaporean will be taken to a court in Johor Bahru on June 9 for a remand application under Section 426 of the Penal Code (for mischief and damage of property) and Section 509 of the Penal Code (utterance of insult). - The Straits Times/ANN

Bodies of missing couple Tanjung Harapan boat accident recovered

A TRAGIC boat accident off Tanjung Harapan, Port Klang, has claimed five lives, including a married couple whose bodies were found drowned near North Port early this morning. The incident, which occurred during a test drive of the boat, involved six people. Three died at the scene, one survived, and two were initially missing. None of the victims were wearing life jackets, complicating the search and rescue efforts. The missing couple, Gan Hon Tat and Careen Man, both from Klang Utama, were among the deceased. Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) enforcement and excise unit operations officer Lieutenant Mohd Syafiq Sazali said both victims were Malaysian nationals. 'The bodies were found floating at 7.42am about 0.1 nautical miles from North Port, Port Klang,' he said. 'We recovered the bodies using assets from the Fire and Rescue Department and brought them to the Selangor Maritime jetty,' he added. Civil servant arrested for allegedly scratching neighbours' cars

AMPANG: A civil servant at a public university was arrested for allegedly scratching two neighbours' cars using a key in the parking area of their apartment in Taman Pandan Mewah here. Ampang Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail said the man, 41, is believed to have committed the offences on May 19 and 22, targeting two different cars parked at a particular spot. "The victims, both Malaysian women, had parked their vehicles in the same spot during the separate incidents," he said in a statement today. "On May 19, the victim found scratches on the front and rear right doors of her Honda, but could not identify the culprit. "In the second incident on May 22 about 1am, another victim's cousin parked a Toyota in the same spot and discovered scratches on the rear door about 6.40am." The victims later lodged complaints with the apartment's management, leading to a review of closed-circuit television footage that captured the man walking near the cars. "Following this, police detained the suspect at 5.35pm on Wednesday in the apartment parking area. A bunch of keys believed to have been used to scratch the cars were also seized." The suspect, a university clerk living in the same apartment, is not personally known to the victims. Azam said the motive remains under investigation. The man has no prior criminal record. The case is being investigated under Section 427 of the Penal Code for causing mischief.
