Pakistan hockey team won't be stopped from competing in India: Ministry source

NEW DELHI: Pakistan's hockey teams will not be stopped from competing in next month's Asia Cup and the junior World Cup in India as any move to block the arch-foes would be a violation of the Olympic Charter, a sports ministry source said on Thursday.
While the Asia Cup is scheduled to be held in Rajgir, Bihar from August 27 to September 7, the junior World Cup will be organised in Chennai and Madurai from November 28 to December 10.
"We are not against any team competing in India in a multi-national competition. If we try to stop Pakistan it would be seen as a violation of the Olympic Charter. But bilateral is different and there will be no relaxation on that front," the source said.
The Charter is akin to the constitution of the Olympic movement and stresses on sport as a tool for promoting international peace and cooperation. As a result, any attempt to block a rival country from a multi-national event adversely impacts the host nation's prospects of getting future hosting rights.
When asked whether this means India will be allowed to play against Pakistan in the Asia Cup of cricket in September, the source said, "The BCCI is yet to reach out to the ministry on this. We will address this query when they approach us."
India and Pakistan have been avoiding bilateral sporting engagements for close to two decades but even multi-lateral face-offs were in doubt after the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 tourists were gunned down in April.
In May, India retaliated with Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan leading to a tense military showdown that de-escalated on Pakistan's request for a ceasefire.
"International sports demands that we cannot back out from competing in multi-national competitions. Take for instance, Russia and Ukraine, they are at war but they show up at multi-national events and compete as well," he added.
Hockey India (HI) welcomed the decision to allow Pakistan hockey teams to play in Asia Cup and junior World Cup in India.
"We welcome government's decision. Our stance from the beginning was that whatever the government decides we will abide by that. There is no other argument in that," HI secretary general Bhola Nath Singh said.
HI had repeatedly stated that they would abide by the government directive on the matter.

I'm just as surprised as anyone when I get a wicket: Maxwell

In the second T20I between Australia and South Africa, Glenn Maxwell took on an unusual role — bowling inside the PowerPlay. Between the 2022 T20 World Cup and this series, he had bowled only five PowerPlay overs in T20Is. So when he dismissed South Africa captain Aiden Markram, the spin-bowling all-rounder reacted animatedly. By his own admission, Maxwell is just as surprised as anyone when he gets a wicket. 'I love getting wickets.' Maxwell told 'It's very surprising anytime I get anyone out. I'm there to do a job in the PowerPlay and I'm trying to execute that as well as I can.' With an eye on the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, Maxwell is looking to build his experience bowling under fielding restrictions. 'I think in the subcontinent you might be able to get a little bit more out of it as a spinner early on,' Maxwell, who has 49 T20I wickets, said. 'Especially that new ball, the hard seam, being able to grip on those dry surfaces. So it might be something we think about head forward,' he added. Maxwell has also spent most of his career shuffling through batting positions, adapting to team needs — whether taking on a favourable matchup or finishing the innings. 'I've been a bit of the shuffler around the order, up and down,' the 36-year-old said. 'I'm filling holes at the moment.' 'Even during the West Indies series, trying to combat Akeal Hosein (by) going up the top, this series going a little bit lower, trying to manage that back end (of the innings). (I'm) trying to play whatever role is needed for me in this side and just try and be as adaptable as possible,' Maxwell said.

‘I am praying that they will refuse to play': Basit Ali slams Pakistan, says ‘India will beat us badly' in Asia Cup 2025

Following their ignominious series defeat to West Indies on the back of a 202-run loss in the decider in Trinidad, Pakistan must hope that India refuse to play them in the upcoming Asia Cup fixture to avoid further embarassment, said former batter Basit Ali. Pakistan endured a crushing blow in a 295-run chase in the third match of a series that they began on a positive note, winning the first ODI. However, after imploding in the second game, Muhammad Rizwan and Co. suffered more of the same in the last match. Three of the top four batters, including skipper Rizwan, fell for ducks as West Indies pacer Jayden Seales steamrolled through the Pakistan order with six wickets. Pakistan were bowled out in under 30 overs, their 92-run total marking their lowest-ever score against West Indies in 50 years. 'I pray India refuse to play against Pakistan in the Asia Cup, just like how they did at the World Championships of Legends. Itni buri tarah maarenge na vo, ki aapki soch hai (They will beat us so badly you can't even imagine),' Basit said on The Game Plan YouTube channel. India and Pakistan are slated to lock horns in the group stage match of the Asia Cup 2025 in Dubai on September 14. Ali added that he wouldn't be surprised to if Pakistan slipped up against Afghanistan in the forthcoming tournament. 'If we lose to Afghanistan, no one would care much in this country. But everyone goes mad the moment you lose to India.' While the recent blips have come in the 50-over format, Pakistan will hope to put on a better show in the Asia Cup, to be played in the T20 format this year. Ali, however, did not mince his words as he slammed the senior duo of Rizwan and Babar Azam for their recurring failures in ODIs after being axed from the T20I set-up. 'They're living up to the performances they did during the beginning of their careers. Ab inse bas advertisements kara lo (Let them just do ads now),' Basit said on The Game Plan. 'They don't listen to the coaches. Whatever the batting coaches say, they just keep pretending to listen to them. They need someone who can give them a wake-up call, like Inzamam, Yousuf or a Younis Khan. And they know there's no one who would do that, because they didn't let anyone do it before.'
