Malaysian diver dies during underwater excursion off Aceh coast
PETALING JAYA: A 33-year-old Malaysian national has died following a diving accident in Indonesian waters near Iboih, Sabang City, Aceh, Indonesia on Sunday.
The tragedy unfolded around 9.30am local time as the victim was exploring underwater sites alongside two fellow Malaysians and a qualified diving instructor.
Local Indonesian media outlet Berita Rakyat Aceh confirmed that authorities were alerted to the emergency and responded swiftly to the location.
According to the report, the diving party had been submerged for approximately 20 minutes at a 30-metre depth when they encountered a powerful underwater current that displaced the group.
The Malaysian victim attempted to surface as directed by the instructor but became unconscious upon breaking the water's surface.
Emergency response measures were initiated immediately, with the unconscious diver transported via speedboat to Iboih Beach where his companions and the instructor performed life-saving CPR procedures.
The group then transported him by vehicle to a local medical facility, arriving at approximately 10.30am local time.
Despite prompt medical intervention by clinic staff, the victim could not be revived and was declared deceased.
His remains have been transferred to Sabang City Hospital where forensic examination procedures are being conducted.
Local officials are coordinating with the victim's companions to facilitate the repatriation process to Malaysia following completion of the post-mortem investigation.

Malaysian Parliament Speaker affirms support to All-Party Delegation in India's approach to terror
Kuala Lumpur [Malaysia], June 3 (ANI): All-Party Parliamentary Delegation, headed by JD(U) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, met Speaker of the House of Representatives, Parliament of Malaysia (Dewan Rakyat), YB Tan Sri Dato' Johari bin Abdul in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, a statement by the High Commission of India in Malaysia said. As per the High Commission, Abdul reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to peace, and thanked the All-Party Parliamentary Delegation for the briefing on India's approach in dealing with terrorism at large. In a post on X, it said, 'All-Party Parliamentary Delegation, led by Hon'ble MP Mr. Sanjay Kumar Jha, met with Hon'ble Speaker of the House of Representatives, Parliament of Malaysia (Dewan Rakyat), H.E. YB Tan Sri Dato' (Dr.) Johari bin Abdul and briefed on India's unwavering policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism, and sought cooperation of Parliamentarians of Malaysia in our collective fight against terrorism. Hon'ble Speaker of Malaysia reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to peace, and thanked the All-Party Parliamentary Delegation for the briefing on India's approach in dealing with terrorism at large.' An all-party delegation from India, led by JD(U) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, held a series of key diplomatic engagements in Malaysia, meeting with representatives of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), as part of a broader outreach to strengthen regional ties and convey India's stance on peace and counter-terrorism. The first meeting was held with the DAP, where the Malaysian delegation was headed by YB Tuan M. Kulasegaran V. Murugeson, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reforms). The meeting focused on matters of mutual interest, including regional peace, legal cooperation, and the fight against terrorism. The Indian delegation later met with representatives of PKR, the People's Justice Party. The Malaysian side was led by YB Senator Saraswathy Kandasami, Deputy Minister of National Unity. Both meetings highlighted the growing collaboration and diplomatic engagement between India and Malaysia. Nowhere to hide for Indonesian woman in Terengganu immigration sweep
KUALA TERENGGANU: An Indonesian woman's attempt to hide under a bed to evade arrest failed after being spotted by enforcement officers from the Terengganu Immigration Department (JIM). Terengganu JIM director Mohd Yusri Mohd Nor said the woman in her 30s was among 11 illegal immigrants arrested in Ops Sapu raids carried out in the Kemaman and Kuala Terengganu districts yesterday. He said the woman was arrested at a house in Bandar Baru Kijal in Kemaman for overstaying after her last line of defence included a marriage certificate which could not be authenticated. 'During the raid, a man in the house claimed to be living alone but his deception was exposed after enforcement officers found women's clothing in a room. 'Upon checking, we discovered a woman hiding under a bed. The couple then showed a marriage certificate, but its validity could not be confirmed because it was not issued by an authoritative religious office in Malaysia,' he said in a statement today. Mohd Yusri said that apart from that hide-and-seek episode, the immigration party also arrested four Bangladeshis, three Indonesians. and two Thais aged between five and 49 years old in raids at seven premises. According to him, all the detainees were taken to the Ajil Immigration Depot for further investigation under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. In addition, a notice was issued to a local man to appear at the state JIM office to assist in investigations under the same act.
