Five key questions before Ligue 1 kicks off again 🤔
The return of French football! This Friday evening, the 2025-26 Ligue 1 season will kick off with a match between Stade Rennais and Olympique de Marseille. At the start of this new season, new questions are surrounding the French championship. Will PSG still be alone at the top? The Parisians have just completed the best season in their history with a resounding triple and undisputed dominance. Already far above all their rivals in Ligue 1 last year, will PSG once again crush everything in their path, or will they pay physically for the grueling season they just had? What season for OL? It's difficult to know what to expect from Lyon this season. Subjected to austerity measures after narrowly avoiding relegation to Ligue 2, Les Gones have made some moves in the transfer market but have mostly lost key players, including Rayan Cherki, Thiago Almada, and Lucas Perri. With the Europa League to play as well, OL will have to quickly get back on track to avoid a season finale in the anonymity of mid-table. Who will be Ligue 1's top scorer? Last season, the race for Ligue 1's top scorer gave us a magnificent final sprint between Mason Greenwood and Ousmane Dembélé. If the Parisian ultimately won the trophy, he will have to contend with new competition this year. Mika Biereth, the prolific Monégasque scorer, will be able to play a full season, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who shone two years ago, is also back on the pitches of the hexagon. Can PFC aim for the top 10? The second club in the capital will undoubtedly be the attraction of the season with their return to Ligue 1. Without going crazy, the club has given itself the means to shine with an ambitious transfer market, including the arrivals of Thibault De Smet, Moses Simon, and Otavio from Porto. Enough to finish in the top half of the table? Which 2018 World Cup winner will impress? Added to the already impressive collection of World Cup winners on Ligue 1 pitches are Floriant Thauvin, Olivier Giroud, and Paul Pogba. In total, there will be eight 2018 World Cup winners to watch play every weekend. If Ousmane Dembélé is the main provider of exciting moments for this season, we're also betting on Florian Thauvin, who is at the top of his game after his stint at Udinese. So, who will shine according to you? 😊 This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. You can read the original version in 🇫🇷 here. 📸 FRANCK FIFE - AFP or licensors

Aryna Sabalenka has a new coach on board at Cincinnati Open
MASON, Ohio — Max Mirnyi won the 1998 U.S. Open and Wimbledon mixed doubles titles with Serena Williams and lost in the finals of the 1999 Australian Open. With Williams. Miryni joined the staff of Aryna Sabalenka in January. So Miryni knows about mercurial ladies who have good hearts but short tempers. 'First thing I want everybody to know,' said the 48-year-old Mirnyi who beat Roger Federer at the 2002 U.S. Open in singles, 'is that Aryna is the sweetest, nicest girl. Please, everybody believe that.' Sabalenka is the No. 1-ranked player in the world , and the top seed and defending champion of the Cincinnati Open. She beat Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-1, 7-5 Wednesday in what was supposed to be a day match but became a night match due to rain. Her victory earned her a fourth round meeting with 9th-seeded Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion. Rybakina upset No. 6 American Madison Keys 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-2. Keys had won her first major at this year's Australian Open. It is not unlike Sabalenka to be undecided with her tennis sometimes. She was very decided on winning just about every point in the first set, taking only 27 minutes to dominate the world's 42nd-ranked player. In the second set, though, Sabalenka seemed to lose her concentration or her head or her mind and most definitely her shots. It wasn't until the 12th and final game of the set until Sabalenka hit a most massive forehand winner into the corner that she could raise her arms in triumph and give a wry smile. Sabalenka hired Miryni to help her with her net game and her serve. But before we get to Aryna, how was that Miryni ended up playing mixed doubles with Serena? 'Our father's met at The Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida,' Miryni said. 'Her dad's name is Richard, right? Both our dads were a little crazy. I was about four years older than Serena and the dads got together and said their kids should play mixed together. I'm just mad we didn't win that Australian. So close to three in a row.' Miryni was asked to join the Sabalenka team by her head coach Anton Dubrov. Miryni had been an accomplished serve-volley player and the thinking is that Sabalenka should be able to use her skills coming off her big serve by volleying more. The pop sound that comes off Sabalenka's racket is telling. There is special power there that not all players have. Her footwork is good and she will bravely try any shot. And the very first point of the match showed what Miryni wants her to do. Sabalenka hit a massive serve and and went full out on a forehand that may have dented the court. Sabalenka, 27, now and in her prime, has earned a bit of a reputation as being a sore loser and even on the court she would break a racket or two or bellow her frustrations loudly after bad shots. There was video of her tearing up a locker room after last year's U.S. Open and she was accused of not being nice enough to Coco Gauff after the Belarusian lost to the American in this year's French Open final. 'And that is so wrong,' Miryni said. Sabalenka was on a practice court on Aug. 12 for about 40 minutes when it started to rain. 'There were fans, hundreds of them, watching Aryna. Most of the other players went running inside – the superstars. But Aryna stayed and attended to every fan, signed autographs, did the selfies. 'That, to me, was great to see. It speaks a lot about a person and I did not know this about here when we first got together. She is a charming girl and many people have the wrong impression of her.' In fact, Sabalenka grows on you. She makes fun of herself plenty off the court. It seemed fine to see her destroy rackets out of the public eye in the locker room. It means she really cares and some people need that release of anger or disgust or disappointment to come out loud and long. And then move on. 'Her hunger and determination are amazing and despite her achievements she knows how much room she has for improvement. She wants to not just win a tournament but to maximize her potential,' Miryni said. Sabalenka has won three majors − the Australian Open twice (2023 and 2024) and the 2024 U.S. Open. Miryni says her goals are much bigger. Because Belarus is tied up with Russia in the Ukrainian war, Sabalenka never sees her flag or hears her anthem at sporting events. He says that bothers Sabalenka. 'It hurts her,' he said. 'Belarus is a small country and those things matter.' Miryni thinks he has had a positive effect on Sabalenka. 'She's a strong, dominating girl, she's got a strong, dominating game but a little more backhand slice and coming into the net after a big serve or back up a powerful groundstroke at the net, I think it could give her new levels.' Sabalenka agrees. 'He wants to move forward always,' Sabalenka said. 'On my serve he's getting me to control my body better, push with my legs, bring my chest up. Nothing really major, but little things that really help.' Her partner for the new U.S. Open one-weekend mixed doubles tournament pulled out and it was suggested that Sabalenka might rope in Miryni. 'We talked about it,' she said, laughing, 'but with the doping system, it's not possible. But it would have been so fun.' How To Serve The U.S. Open's Official Drink, The Honey Deuce, At Home
NEW YORK, NY - SEPTEMBER 07: The Grey Goose Suite at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on September 7, 2018 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City. (Photo byfor Grey Goose) Getty Images The U.S. Open takes over the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center grounds in Queens, New York every year at the end of August, before summer nights fade into fall. And so does the Honey Deuce, the official cocktail of the U.S. Open. The drink debuted at the 2006 U.S. Open when Grey Goose became a sponsor, and in recent years the sipper has catapulted to its own form of celebrity. No one at the U.S. Open would dare leave without posing with their Grey Goose Honey Deuce. Can't snag a ticket to the U.S. Open this year? No problem—you can still sip like you're courtside. Molly Horn, chief mixologist and spirits educator at Total Wine & More, offered up tips for making the best version of this signature cocktail at home, whether you're toasting solo during a nail-biter match or serving a crowd at your own Grand Slam watch party. There is something so special about the Honey Deuce at the U.S. Open; so much so that it may not feel the same drinking from home. Do you have any tips, tricks or hacks for ensuring it still tastes awesome even when making it yourself? Horn: I would imagine for most home bartenders the challenge is the honeydew melon balls. There are plenty of great, quality lemonades on the market if you can't make it fresh yourself, and Chambord and Baron De Casterac are great (black) raspberry liqueurs — another option if you want a straight raspberry liqueur is Drillaud. For those honeydew balls, I would recommend getting a melon baller — which will make the process much faster and easier — and attacking the whole melon. If you haven't done this before, it's actually super easy, but having the right tool will make all the difference. If you do you want to make lemonade yourself, the key is to use fresh lemon juice and whisk it together aggressively with equal amounts of granulated sugar — the lemon juice will break down and dissolve the sugar much better than adding it to water alone first — then add your filtered water. I prefer a ratio of one part lemon juice, one part sugar, and four parts water for a nice and brightly tangy lemonade, but if that's too sweet or sour for you you can always adjust — just do so before you add it to the cocktail. What's the most common mistake people make when trying to recreate the Honey Deuce at home? Horn: A majority of the challenges I see for the home mixologist with this cocktail is using a shelf-stable lemonade that doesn't have the zip or tang of a fresh lemonade. Since that is the foundation of the cocktail, it's really important to either purchase fresh lemonade (from the refrigerated section of your shop or market, with a sell-by date within one to two weeks) or make it yourself. Can you talk through batching this cocktail and what that looks like? Horn: This is a great recipe for batching since it doesn't require any dilution (aka, it doesn't get shaken or stirred, just poured together). My biggest tip, as always, is just to make sure all of your ingredients are very cold (vodka in the freezer, other ingredients in the fridge for 24 hours+ before serving) in order to minimize over-dilution of your batch. I also recommend freezing melon balls overnight — not only will they work better to keep your batched cocktail nice and chilled, but they won't melt and over-dilute the way ice cubes would. Glassware and ice are also so important to this drink — what do you suggest? Horn: I like to serve it in a tall glass, like a Collins or a Highball. I personally prefer to freeze the honeydew balls and use those for 'ice' (since I also have my ingredients for the cocktail chilled in advance), but if you want to go for real ice it would look and taste great with a highball ice cube. You can find ice trays that make four long, wide, ice cubes that will fill up the length of your glass, keep your cocktail nice and cold, and take a long time to melt — allowing you to enjoy it at your leisure. Are there any other spins on this cocktail that could make it a bit more unique, while keeping the essence? Horn: This recipe is a great one for riffing — for one thing, using a sparkling lemonade adds a great effervescence I really enjoy. Elderflower plays nicely with the flavors in the cocktail, so adding a splash of elderflower liqueur or syrup is a really nice addition. And of course, many different fruit liqueurs will work great in place of raspberry if you want to switch it up, such as Drillaud Strawberry Liqueur or any of the Chinola flavors — which would also add a nice texture — especially passion fruit or pineapple.
