Siemens delivers India's first 9000 HP electric locomotive for long-haul freight trains
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday flagged off the inaugural D9 – 9000 HP electric locomotive, one of the most powerful freight locomotives in the world, from Indian Railways' advanced Dahod factory in Gujarat.
Approximately 90% of the technologies deployed in the locomotives are made in India and this would lead to 800 million tonne of CO2 emissions being saved over lifecycle, Siemens said.
Following the award to Siemens for the design, engineering, manufacturing and maintenance of 1,200 locomotives of 9000 horsepower (HP) electric locomotives, Siemens' factories in Nashik, Aurangabad and Mumbai have been manufacturing critical components for this project, with final assembly, testing and commissioning performed at the Indian Railways' factory in Dahod.
Sunil Mathur, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Siemens Ltd., said, 'We take great pride in partnering with Indian Railways in this prestigious project. Together, we have been able to construct a world-class factory and approximately 90% of the technologies are made in India for the 9000 HP electric locomotive.'
'The introduction of these advanced locomotives is crucial to realising the Government of India's aspiration to elevate railway's share in freight movement from 27% to around 45%. This is a commendable achievement for both Indian Railways and Siemens,' he said.
Each of the 1,200 locomotives of 9000 HP has a maximum speed of 120 km/h. The locomotives, which have a haulage capacity of 5800 tonne, are designed to transport freight efficiently across India's vast rail network.
Siemens will also perform the maintenance for the entire lifespan of 35 years for these locomotives. The locomotives are equipped with Siemens' Railigent X platform for predictive maintenance, ensuring highest availability and performance, the company said.
The advanced digital tracking systems, the Kavach safety system, and green propulsion technology, make these locomotives a beacon of modern rail transport, it added.

However, beyond the airport, the Yellow Line construction has been a major challenge as Metro Railway opted for the cut-and-cover technique to build the twin tunnels. In the absence of TBMs, the construction would involve excavating a trench to build the tunnel structure and then filling it. Beijing doors ajar for trade package delivery
New Delhi | Mumbai: India and China may commence discussions shortly on a trade package covering supplies of critical rare earth magnets , fertilisers and pharmaceuticals, said people with knowledge of the matter. This would signal a thaw in relations with the neighbour amid heightening tensions with the US and the clamour from Indian industry to expedite imports of essential inputs from China. Consultations between representatives of the two countries are likely to take place later this month, around the time of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, scheduled to be held in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1, the people said. 'The top three items on the agenda for discussion are rare earth magnets, fertilisers and pharmaceuticals,' a senior official told ET. While outreach has begun, supplies of rare earth magnets and all fertilisers are yet to resume from China. India mandates government approval for investment by countries that have a border with it, a measure specifically aimed at its northern neighbour. That's against the backdrop of an escalation in tensions over the past five years, including border skirmishes and China's support for Pakistan. China announced export controls on medium and heavy rare earth-related items on April 4, with a view to 'safeguarding national security' in response to US President Donald Trump's tariffs, citing end-use norms. Possible talks with Beijing assume significance in light of the 50% tariff that Trump has imposed on Indian exports. The US has deferred tariffs on China by 90 days. Rare earth magnets are essential for a wide range of products, but especially for electric vehicles. While China has resumed shipments of rare earth magnets to companies in the US, Europe and Southeast Asia, export licences are yet to be issued to vendors supplying to India. 'Individual clearances for importing these items have not come so far,' said one of the persons. 'Negotiations will now start between the two countries for a trade package.' Beijing had also halted shipments of urea and some other fertilisers to India in the last three months. It has begun the process of easing restrictions on supplies of just urea to the country. 'Tenders for import of urea from China have been floated,' said a top executive of a fertiliser company. This indicates China is agreeable to sending some amount of the fertiliser to India. State trading enterprises, which import urea from China on behalf of the Indian government, have started floating tenders for the import of a limited quantity of the crop nutrient. While there is no talk about specialty fertilisers, discussions are likely going ahead, people aware of developments said. China had also stopped shipments of specialty fertilisers such as calcium nitrate and mono ammonium phosphate. India imports about 80% of these chemicals from China. A global supplier of agricultural inputs, Beijing has, however, been exporting them to other countries. LOOKING AHEAD Meanwhile, both India and China are concerned about the looming trade imbalance in pharmaceuticals. Trump's proposed tariff on finished drugs — 250% over the next one and a half years — stands to disrupt the industry in both countries. The commerce ministry has called for a meeting ahead of the SCO summit with top representatives from the pharmaceutical industry to discuss, among other issues, ways to collaborate and strengthen ties with China as part of broader cooperation. Industry watchers told ET the contours of the discussions have not been disclosed yet, but these may include mitigation plans against the backdrop of US tariffs. 'While pharmaceutical exports from India have been thus far exempt from the 50% US tariffs, future risks cannot be ruled out,' an industry expert told ET.

Nagpur dist leads as Maha crosses 1,000MW rooftop solar milestone
Nagpur: Maharashtra scripted a green energy success story by crossing the 1,000 MW rooftop solar power generation mark under the Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar Free Electricity Scheme. Nagpur district has emerged as the top performer in the state. The scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2024, aims to provide free electricity to households and enable them to sell surplus power to the grid. In just a year and a half, over 2.5 lakh households in the state installed rooftop solar projects, with the combined capacity now touching one gigawatt. The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) is driving this drive across the state. In Nagpur, 40,152 consumers have taken benefit of the scheme with an installed capacity of 157 MW, which is far ahead of other districts. Pune follows with 19,195 consumers (89 MW), Jalgaon with 18,892 (70 MW), Amravati with 15,245 (63 MW), Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar with 16,664 (59 MW), and Nashik with 15,468 (55 MW).
