Daniel Ricciardo speaks his mind about Max Verstappen in rare interview after F1 axe
Daniel Ricciardo has declared his pride in what Max Verstappen has accomplished over his 200 races as a Formula 1 driver. The Dutchman burst onto the scene a decade ago as a fresh-faced 17-year-old, by far the youngest racer the sport had ever seen.
But what he lacked in time on planet Earth he more than made up for with his obvious natural talent. It was only a year later, aged 18, that he was promoted from the Red Bull junior outfit and made an immediate impact, winning his first race with the top team.
His team-mate at the time was Ricciardo, who had already established himself as team leader at the Milton Keynes-based squad. But that status began to fate as Verstappen continues to shine, while there were moments of tension – most notably when they collided at the 2018 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Ricciardo announced in the middle of the 2018 season that he would leave at the end of the year. Since then, their respective trajectories have diverged somewhat with Verstappen becoming a four-time F1 champion and Ricciardo enduring unspectacular stints with Renault and McLaren before dropping off the grid.
He was hired back by Red Bull as a reserve and got back onto the grid in 2023 when Nyck de Vries was axed by sister team Racing Bulls. But, little over a year later, the Australian too was removed from his race seat and he has since made it clear that his F1 career is over.
But it seems there are certainly no hard feelings between Ricciardo and Verstappen. The Aussie made it clear that is the case from his standpoint in a race interview recently, having chosen to keep a largely low profile since leaving the F1 World for good.

"Seeing Max go on to be, four-time World champion? I lose count. He has won that many now," Ricciardo said during a conference appearance. "But four-time World champion, I am proud. I am like, 'Okay, that was cool. That is a team-mate I had, that was someone who I shared a lot of time on track with'."
In another rare public appearance, Ricciardo was spotted earlier this summer at Wimbledon to take in some tennis. Photos taken of him at SW19 show the Australian has chosen to grow out his hair and beard in a stark transformation from his clean-cut appearance while racing, and mentioned it as he opened up on what his life has been like away from the F1 circus.
He said: "I haven't been shaving my face, the beard is my comfort right now. This year has been a bit of self-exploration. I lived this crazy high-speed life for so long, and this year I have sat into a little bit of stillness. I have had a lot of time, I have done some hiking. I was in Alaska a few weeks ago and did not get mauled by a grizzly, which was a bonus.
"I have been trying to figure out who I am, other than this race car driver. I have come to appreciate the little things more and the meaning of the importance of family and friends. I have always been driven and that sometimes leads you to being selfish, so I am trying to learn to be a bit more selfless and become a better listener.

"I never thought I would have this career. I never thought I would be here – that is the truth. Yes, my dream was to be World champion, and there were years along the way where I genuinely felt like it was going to happen.
'I got close, that is okay. If I were a World champion sitting here today, would it change how I feel, or how I view myself, or anything like that? I don't think so. Maybe my ego would be big and we don't want that! I have no regrets."

Springbok star issues apology as Rassie Erasmus turns air blue after stunning collapse
Springbok star issues apology as Rassie Erasmus turns air blue after stunning collapse South Africa fell to a shock defeat at the hands of Australia in the opening match of The Rugby Championship Siya Kolisi of South Africa (Image:) South Africa captain Siya Kolisi has issued a heartfelt apology to supporters after his side's "unacceptable" defeat to Australia in the opening match of The Rugby Championship. The Springboks raced into a commanding 22-0 lead inside the opening quarter at Ellis Park on Saturday, but completely collapsed as the Wallabies mounted a remarkable comeback to claim a historic 38-22 win and leave the hosts stunned. Not only was it a first win for Joe Schmidt's side at Ellis Park since 1963, it was also their first win anywhere in South Africa for 14 years. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby. The shock defeat left head coach Rassie Erasmus furious, as he confessed to reporters after the match that he was "embarrassed" having watched his side be "tactically out-smarted" and "physically dominated" by Schmidt's men. Skipper Kolisi has also addressed his side's "unacceptable" performance in the wake of the shock result, telling SuperSport that he and his team-mates only have themselves to blame. 'We let ourselves down today,' said the 34-year-old back rower. "The things we worked on – discipline, the breakdown – they definitely won the breakdown battles. We didn't put them under enough pressure. "We let ourselves down a lot and we have to take that on the chin. It's unacceptable the way we performed. You can't start like that, then take your foot off the pedal. That's just unacceptable from us. Article continues below 'It was the errors, but also the breakdown," he added. "We'd fight, get into the 22, and then they'd steal the ball. It's something we knew they would do, because they've been good at it. We just didn't look after the ball well enough.' Kolisi, who was making his first Test start at No.8, went on to praise the Wallabies for their performance before apologising to the home fans for what they had just witnessed. 'They played really well," he continued. "Credit to the Australian team – they kept on fighting, they never gave up even though we started well and went ahead. So well done to them. But from us, you can see from the boys we're not proud of the performance we put out today. 'We're not going to drop our heads. We'll go again next week and fight. Whoever gets the opportunity to play, we're going to take it. There's not much else we can do now but fight. 'Thank you to everybody who supported us. Sorry about the performance, but we'll come again next week.' The Springbok legend's words came as his head coach Erasmus was turning the air blue in his post-match press conference with an even more frank assessment of his side's performance, which he described as "dog s***". "I must be honest, it is probably one of the most embarrassing press conferences I've done in a while," he said. "Not because we were awful, they were really good and I want to put the old cliché out there, credit to them, they were good - but we made them better with our poor performance. "To be 22-0 up, we did the same against Italy, 27-3 up and then we let teams back in. Yes, we gave them one or two soft tries but overall they were just better than us on the day in most departments and yeah, we as coaches got it terribly wrong, and we have to look first at ourselves before we point fingers at the players." Erasmus added: "We know that from now to next Saturday we have to take a lot of flak and we're very disappointed, we feel bad for our supporters and are feeling bad for our players overall for what we produced. Article continues below "I don't think they tactically out-smarted us, I think they also physically dominated us. The saddest thing is we didn't even fight back to take a bonus point away. Listen man, I can butter this up to sound cool and respectful, but we were really dog s*** on the day."

Resurgent Neil Robertson reveals decision that has 'transformed his life'
Neil Robertson is back at the top of snooker after feeling that things could not get much worse just 18 months ago and he credits a transformative decision for his resurgence. The Thunder from Down Under edged Ronnie O'Sullivan 10-9 to win a brilliant Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters final on Saturday in Jeddah. After building a substantial lead at 7-2, Robertson found himself 9-8 down, before forcing a decider and making a good break to down the seven-time world champ. That saw the Australian pocket the £500,000 top prize and shoot up to number three in the world rankings after a fine week which also saw him beat the likes of Mark Selby and Ali Carter. It is a far cry from just last year when he missed out on a trip to the Crucible after falling out of the top 16 in the rankings and losing in World Championship qualifying. 'This is a huge rebound from right at the bottom,' Robertson said on Sunday night. 'Things couldn't have been any worse for me 18 months ago. So to be able to come back the way I have I think this is a feel good story.' Given the context of the victory and who it was against, Robertson reckons it is the finest of his career, and he is sure it could not have happened without the new team he has set up of sports psychologist Helen Davis and coach, mentor and friend Joe Perry. The 43-year-old especially heaped praise on Davis, who he started working with last season, as life-changing. 'I always thought I was really strong mentally, which I am, but I think when you see an actual specialist, a sports psychologist…and you look at tennis players and golfers, they're always thanking their team whenever they win you know that's the first people they thank is their team,' he said. 'That's what I've managed to set up with with Helen Davis, who's worked with Wimbledon champions, and with Joe. 'At the start of the summer the three of us were on a Zoom call and we talked for about two hours about what is the plan for the season, the mindset, the style of play, what we want to achieve and to see it all come together so quickly is amazing. 'Helen has just transformed my life, she really has. The first meeting with her I was just like: 'Wow I really want to do!'' Robertson has also been working on his fitness, which he feels helped him over the line on Sunday after O'Sullivan bounced back from 7-2 behind to draw level at 7-7 and then the match went all the way to a deciding frame. 'Physically I'm in the best physical shape I've ever been in,' he said. 'I lose that final all day long last year because I wasn't. 'Even though I had improved a lot in a lot of things I still wasn't physically where I'm at. Where I'm at now is really strong, I didn't feel tired at all or at any point this week and that's probably the first time I think I've won an event where that didn't happen.' Back among the very elite of the game, questions will again be asked of Robertson's Crucible credentials as he has not been to the World Championship final since he won the title in 2010. The Saudi Arabia Masters was Robertson's 26th ranking title so his relatively poor record in Sheffield is confusing and he admits doubts had crept in over whether he could overcome it. 'I'm not obsessed about winning another world title as probably I have been the last six or seven years but this was the type of win that tells me within myself I can definitely do it,' he said. 'There has been sort of some doubts. 'But to beat the players that I have this week, to beat Ronnie in a final when he comes back at you like that. I've never experienced anything like that before in my life.' The brilliant final was played between two players who have the utmost respect for each other and while O'Sullivan was obviously disappointed to lose, he does wish Robertson every success. 'He calls me pretty frequently,' Robertson said of the Rocket. 'He wants to see me win more world titles and more tournaments, he really wants to see me do well. To have that kind of relationship with him is incredibly special. 'He's one of the inspirations for me. Growing up as a kid there's no way I would have thought as a 14 or 15 year old that I'll be competing against Ronnie in major finals or I'll be where I am today 30 years later. More Trending 'It's got to go down as one of the greatest finals of all time. To be a part of that and to be on the right side of it as well. 'I also believe if he's playing anyone else in the world then he probably wins today. I think from 7-2 to 7-7. I'm not too sure…maybe Judd [Trump] or Kyren [Wilson] could possibly withstand that 'To be able to withstand the pressure and to be the first person who stood up to him this week when he's come back like an absolute freight train, that's more pleasing than if I went on to win the match 10-4 or 10-5. To win it in this this way from 9-8 down and the two breaks I made the last two frames, just amazing.' Ex-Rangers star Vaclav Cerny makes goalscoring return as his club open new season with staggering NINE-NIL win
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) VACLAV CERNY opened his goalscoring account for Rangers just over a year ago. 12 months on, he netted again as his current side stormed to a remarkable NINE-NIL win to kick-off the new season. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 3 Vaclav Cerny became a huge Rangers fans' favourite Credit: Getty 3 The winger was only on loan at Ibrox Credit: Willie Vass 3 He's now back at Wolfsburg Credit: Shutterstock Editorial Cerny, 27, was a huge hit for Rangers last campaign as he struck 18 goals in 52 games across all competitions. But he was only on loan for the season with the Light Blues not holding either an option or obligation to buy when the stint came to an end. As a result, he departed at the end of the season and there hasn't been any sign of an Ibrox return for the Czech winger. It means he's back in Germany with Wolfsburg. Cerny was an £8million signing for the Bundesliga outfit in June 2023 but struggled to make a big impact in his debut season. But that year in Glasgow seems to have done him the world of good and it looks like he's back in the fold at Wolfsburg again. That's despite being heavily linked with a move to Turkish side Besiktas all summer long. Wolfsburg have a new manager this season in Dutchman Paul Simonis and he seems to have given Cerny another chance to showcase his talents at the club. The competitive German season got underway this weekend with the first round of the DFB-Pokal, the national German cup competition. The league season follows next weekend. Billy Dodds on turning down Celtic for Rangers and surviving relegation scare with Aberdeen Wolfsburg were drawn to face SV Hemelingen, a local Bremen-based side playing at the fifth level of German football. And the top flight club were in no mood to take things easy as they demolished the minnows NINE-NIL. It was a strong Wolfsbug side and they took the lead on 13 minutes through a familiar face. Former Celtic defender Moritz Jenz came on as a substitute just ten minutes in and opened the scoring just three minutes later. Two more goals followed before half-time and on 59 minutes, Cerny entered the fray. The former Gers man came off the bench with the score at 4-0, with Mattias Svanberg making it 5-0 moments after Cerny's introduction. Svanberg netted Wolfsburg's sixth on 71 minutes before Cerny had his moment. He scored the seventh goal of the game. Striker Dzenan Pejcinovic ensured he was the one to take most of the headlines, however, as he netted the eighth and ninth goals of the game and secured himself a hat-trick. Wolfsburg now move on to the second round where they'll likely face a tougher test. Whether or not Cerny is still there when that game comes around in October remains to be seen. Reports in Turkey are still heavily linking him with a switch to Besiktas with fresh claims being made that talks are underway between the Super Lig club and Wolfsburg over a transfer.
