Funding secured for proposed new A50 junction near Derby

BBC News30-07-2025
Almost £50m of government funding has been secured to allow a new A50 junction south of Derby to be built. The proposed junction between Sinfin and Chellaston would connect a new link road to a planned 4,500 home development, known as Infinity Garden Village.Derbyshire County Council - which is leading the project - said it had gained the funding to begin the £70m transport scheme, which was granted planning permission in 2021.The council had until March 2026 to secure the £49,597,972, and without it the authority faced the possibility of scrapping the entire project.
Council leader Alan Graves said the project "is an important part of supporting sustainable growth in the south of the county".He said alongside housing the development, when finished, will include around 3.5m sq ft of businesses to create "much-needed, good quality jobs".He said: "There is still much to do before actual construction begins on the road but this funding announcement is very much welcomed and is a huge step forward to making things happen."
The transport scheme is estimated to be completed by March 2029.But the cost of the scheme has almost doubled from £37.5m when the link road project was granted planning permission in 2021In March, the East Midlands Combined County Authority was told that negotiations with landowners over the compulsory purchase of the land needed for the junction and road were "ongoing".The £150m expansion of Infinity Park was granted planning permission in 2023 with a new hotel, pub, drive-through cafe and office buildings, which aim to create 3,000 jobs.

New £218m Essex railway station to open this autumn

A new £218 million railway station is on track to open in the UK this autumn. Beaulieu Park Station in Chelmsford, Essex, is expected to welcome commuters later this year following a two-year multi-million pound construction project. Operated by Greater Anglia, the station will ferry commuters to and from London Liverpool Street in just 40 minutes. With three platforms, two car parks and a taxi rank, the stop will be served by the Beaulieu Parkway relief road and the Chelmsford North-East bypass. The railway hub is the first new station to be built on the Great Eastern Main Line in more than 100 years. Essex County Council, in collaboration with Chelmsford City Council and Network Rail, secured £218 million of government funding to begin construction in March 2023. According to Essex County Council, Beaulieu Park will 'ease pressure on the existing train station and reduce car journeys into the city centre.' The Beaulieu Park project was originally scheduled for completion in 2026 as part of the new Chelmsford Garden Community. Chelmsford's Garden Community has planning permission for 4,350 homes, local shops, health services and the first all-through primary and secondary school in Essex. Councillor Louise McKinlay said: 'Essex is pioneering the type of infrastructure-supported growth that's on the national agenda, being bold and ambitious in our commitment to future-proofing the county and putting investment where it's most needed. 'The new Beaulieu Park station is a testament to this, and the role it will play in transforming travel in this part of Chelmsford and surrounding areas will have a positive impact for years to come. 'The progress being made to build the station is remarkable and I want to thank everyone involved for their hard work to get the project to this stage. I'm very much looking forward to the station opening later this year.'

UK consumer sentiment recovers to strongest level since October

Sentiment among UK consumers recovered to its strongest level since before the autumn budget last year, according to new figures. The latest monthly S&P Global UK Consumer Sentiment Index found that surveyed consumers were still relatively downbeat but saw sentiment move higher after the latest cut to interest rates. Earlier this month, the Bank of England voted to cut its base interest rate from 4.25% to 4%. The CSI, which surveys more than 1,500 households, reported a reading of 47.0 for August, rising from 45.1 in July. The reading is the highest since October. Any reading below 50 points to negative sentiment, with a reading above 50 suggesting positive feeling among consumers. Households reported the strongest sentiment about their personal finances for 13 months, although this remained in firmly negative territory. There was also an improvement about how households viewed the labour market, with rises in job security and activity at work. Maryam Baluch, economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said: 'August CSI data comes hot on the heels of the recent rate cut decision made by the Bank of England earlier in the month. 'Data collection began just a day after the central bank's announcement, providing a timely snapshot of sentiment in the wake of monetary policy easing. 'Encouragingly, the data reveals a slight revival in household confidence, which is a telling sign that the easing of monetary policy has been received positively by households across the country.'

Three car garage: One new 75-plate car or three used cars for £75k?

The latest registration change is on the way, with many buyers ready to place an order for a brand new 75-plate car. If you're very flush, you might have 75 grand to spend – a budget that could bag a brilliant Porsche Macan GTS, or a Toyota Land Cruiser with a fiver in change. But what if you want to assemble a perfect three-car fleet instead? We've set a £75k budget that covers all of the bases. Every three-car garage needs a do-it-all car. One that can cross the country at the drop of a hat, and do it in supreme comfort and using the bare minimum of fuel. The Skoda Superb Estate is our Estate of the Year for good reason, and it's all of the above and plenty more besides. We found a 74-plate model, in top-spec L&K trim with four-wheel drive and a 193bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine with less than 8,000 miles, for just over £34k – a whopping £15k under list price.
