Bridge collapse kills 9 in India's Gujarat state
Gujarat's Health Minister Rushikesh Patel said several vehicles were on the bridge when a portion of it collapsed, sending many into the river. He said at least five people were rescued.
The incident occurred in Gujarat's Vadodara district, which has witnessed heavy rains over the past few days. The bridge was constructed in 1985, Patel said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the accident was 'deeply saddening' and offered condolences to those who died.
India's infrastructure has long been marred by safety concerns, sometimes leading to major disasters on its highways and bridges.
In 2022, a century-old cable suspension bridge collapsed into a river in Gujarat, sending hundreds plunging into the water and killing at least 132.

Plans in place to replace 2 Clarksburg bridges
CLARKSBURG, (WBOY) — For those who just can't get enough of road work in Clarksburg, there are now plans to replace two bridges in downtown Clarksburg, but not for a while. In a proposed plan, titled 'H. Laban White Memorial Bridge Project,' suggestions are made to replace the West Pike Street bridge that runs over Elk Creek, and the H. Laban White bridge, which runs over the West Fork River at the intersection of West Pike and Milford streets in Clarksburg. New replacement bridges are in the early stages of planning, with construction set to begin in 2029. 'They're old bridges, they were built back, I think, in the '30s, so they are historic and they, you know, lived their service life. It's time to replace them,' Assistant Director of Engineering Division with the West Virginia Division of Highways Mark White said. Why is the construction in downtown Clarksburg taking so long? A public informational meeting was held at the Clarksburg-Harrison County Library on Tuesday to give people a chance to ask questions and to make comments on the proposed project. At the meeting, informational packets were given out, as well as the opportunity to speak directly with engineers and other officials. 'So we are starting with initial design work. We're coming out, meeting with the public, showing them what alternatives we are looking at and trying to get their feedback on any information they have on this bridge,' White said. The project is in the early stages of development and ideas are still being proposed and worked on. White estimates that once the project begins, it could take a few years to complete. In the meantime, a temporary bridge is being proposed to maintain the flow of traffic during the construction of the new bridge. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This Country Produces The Most Pomegranates In The World
Pomegranates are a seriously underrated fruit. This ruby red gem is delicious and tart -- tasting great by itself, in drinks like Ina Garten's festive holiday batch cocktail, and even in savory dishes. Whether you like to eat pomegranates as is or use them in cooking, you can thank one country for producing mass amounts of pomegranates: India. India single-handedly leads pomegranate production, producing 2.4 million metric tons of pomegranates each year. In comparison to other countries, India produces nearly double the amount of pomegranates than any other country in the world. India has been a consistent leader in pomegranate production thanks to its hot climate, which has proven to be ideal for producing not only pomegranates but other fruits, too. India also happens to be the country that produces the most bananas for similar reasons. As such, this means that the pomegranates you grab from the store are more than likely exported from India's crop. Read more: 13 Meats People Used To Eat, But Are Now Illegal In The US Pomegranate Production Around The World Part of what makes India's pomegranate production so high is the fact that the fruit is grown year-round, making the exports continuous. Most of the pomegranates from India are produced in a state known as Maharashtra, which makes a majority of India's exported pomegranates. Several varieties of pomegranates are grown here and throughout India, such as Ganesh and Arakta pomegranates. Outside of India, pomegranates are also grown in other countries throughout the Middle East and Asia. Major pomegranate-producing countries include Egypt, China, Iran, and more. There is also some production in Europe from Spain and Turkey, as well as some additional production in countries outside of Eurasia, like Peru and Israel. These do not contribute nearly as heavily as the countries located in Asia and the Middle East. Out of all of these countries, China and Iran are the only countries besides India to produce more than a million metric tons of pomegranates per year. China produces roughly 1.6 million tons of pomegranates annually, with Iran following closely behind with 1.1 million metric tons. From there, production drastically drops to 559,000 metric tons and 380,000 metric tons from Turkey and Egypt, respectively. Read the original article on Chowhound. Solve the daily Crossword
