Beyond Yoga Puts Lululemon and Athleta on Notice With Bigger Store Format

Yahooa day ago

Beyond Yoga is stepping out, cutting the ribbon on a bigger store concept in Greenwich, Conn., on Friday and preparing an assortment that really lives up to its name.
It's Beyond Yoga's first brick-and-mortar store on the East Coast and a big moment for the brand, which Levi Strauss & Co. bought in 2021 and which is now being prepped for a growth spurt that would put it into direct competition with Lululemon and Athleta at scale.

Leading the way is Nancy Green, who oversaw Athleta as it grew from 39 to 175 stores and has been putting that experience to work since becoming Beyond Yoga's chief executive officer last year.
Green has been using her own particular blend of art and science to set the brand up for its next step. The arrival in Greenwich, for instance, is no accident. The company knows from its e-commerce business that the greater New York area is its largest market and used that data to guide it to the wealthy enclave.
'There's a big intuitive piece to this too,' Green told WWD. 'There's the data on where the bulk of our customer fans are currently, and then there's intuition. Does that make sense? Does that feel right? Because you can go into a market and there's multiple places you could open. We're opening in Boston [this year] and we can see where that customer bubble is in the Boston area. And there's multiple choices where we could go. We're going to Seaport because we stand there, we watch, we see our customer walking the streets.
'The other piece that's important is, Does the space feel right? That's also intuitive,' she said. 'Maybe it's not the right location or you need to wait for the right location. We're not going to go in just because the data shows us that that's probably where we should be.'
Both sides of Green's brain aligned on the Greenwich store, a 2,760-foot-space that also has room to hold events and tap into that 'wellness-forward lifestyle' customer the brand targets.
'It's gorgeous,' Green said. 'Light oak floors, very natural elements and a lot of wood, a lot of very organic shapes, curves. The main reason for the larger format is that the line is expanding quite a bit. We needed a larger space to showcase the breadth of the assortment and to really just show the best expression of the brand. We're also [planning to use] these new spaces as community hubs, whether it's fitness events that we do in the store, community events, whatever is right for that store. We create very strong local partnerships with various studios.'
The store comes with a new logo and is at the vanguard of a bigger rollout — both in retail and in terms of Beyond Yoga's assortment, which all includes or ties back to its signature Spacedye fabric.
While the 20-year-old business has long had workout-ready gear and dresses, the collection has been growing rapidly lately. Puffer jackets were added last year. In August, the assortment reaches out more with wide-leg bottoms, vegan leather, sweaters, cashmere wool blends, varsity-inspired prep looks, styles for the trail and more.
Beyond Yoga is done tiptoeing and is going even further beyond yoga with more looks that work from the studio to work to the street to the airport and everywhere else.
'First and foremost, we are a lifestyle brand that serves an active woman and man's lifestyle,' Green said. 'So we think about what are the things that they do? What do they need? Well, it starts with the activities that they do.'
With the Greenwich opening, Beyond Yoga has eight doors and is expanding to 14 by the end of the year. Earlier this year Green said the brand could have 'at least 200 stores' over time.
'This is our 2.0 in stores,' Green said of the Greenwich location. 'This is a new concept. We are going to test it and we are going to nail it. We have to iterate and tweak some things as we learn and then we nail it and then we scale it. So test, iterate, nail it and scale it.'

TikTok influencer targeted with criticism after viral video about 'unchic' fashion choices sparks backlash

Lifestyle influencer Tara Langdale talked to Fox News Digital about how she received hurtful messages from critics after a not-so-serious fashion post describing what she views as "unchic" went viral, spawning a cascade of events that made her apolitical post a victim of attacks. The self-described stay-at-home working mom amassed some 250,000 views and found herself on the receiving end of some hate after an April 7 TikTok of her seated, drinking from a wine glass with nicely done hair, gold jewelry and manicured nails as she skimmed through a list of "unchic" fashion sins. Tattoos, Lululemon, baggy denim, camouflage and visible panty lines were just a few that made part one of Langdale's controversial "unchic" list, which drew backlash from seething critics who called her out with a political twist. "Voting for Trump is unchic," one said. Vogue Attacks Melania Trump's Official White House Portrait, Compares Her To 'Freelance Magician' "To her, privilege = chic. Hope this helps!" said another. Read On The Fox News App A third said, "just say you're a republican and go lmao," while a slew of commenters took exception to her tattoo stance and ranted about classism. The video even caught The Guardian's attention, prompting an article that coined "chic" as "a shorthand for a type of conservative-coded aesthetic" and spoke of the "rigid and airbrushed" looks of Trump allies, sch as Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. Though Langdale diddles cribe herself as conservative when speaking to Fox News Digital, she insists not everything is about politics. "When I get dressed in the morning, I'm not thinking about my political party and how I should dress to showcase that," Langdale said. "I think conservativism is more of culture, religion – all of those things go into your conservativist mindset. Now, if you're talking about conservative style of dress… that's also going to be more like religion and culture," she went on. "Of course, if I'm going to church on Sunday, I'm dressing very conservative. I'm going to keep it classy, but if you see me in the street in my regular day-to-day, I am not at all conservative. I would never consider my style to be conservative. But am I conservative? Absolutely, so I can differentiate the two. I know that the internet has a hard time doing that." Mom Living With Alopecia Reacts To Liberal Women Shaving Heads To Be 'Unattractive' After Donald Trump's Win Langdale addressed the politicized dogma, saying she doesn't understand why TikTok users jumped to conclusions about "conservative" or "Republican makeup" as they did. "Because I'm blonde, because I have more of a natural look about me, I'm not fully glammed all the time… I'm really not sure how that makes me appear conservative, but, again, I just think when people don't agree with what you say, they have to find a way to discredit you, and that's just an easy tactic," she continued. At the same time, Langdale pushed back against the idea of her video implying that people too poor to afford expensive items are automatically "unchic," and pointed to brand-name items like athletic apparel brand Lululemon, Apple Watches and Golden Goose sneakers – all of which can be pricey – as evidence pointing to the contrary. "Just keep in mind that money talks and wealth whispers, and I don't know any wealthy people that are wearing Gucci across their chest," she said in her original post. Langdale explained that the TikTok trend of users showcasing "things I find incredibly chic" grabbed her attention as they began circulating on the app. She found them "pretentious and off-putting," so she felt compelled to take her own stab at the video. New York Times Guest Essay Suggests Fashion Industry Has 'Given Up' On 'Woke' Values "Of course, my video came off as pretentious and off-putting as well, but it felt like a certain level of cringe for me, and I don't like to personally attack anybody on social media, so I wouldn't go after a specific creator. I just kind of wanted to hop on the trend… so that was my initial, 'Why I created the video.'" Langdale shared that her direct messages on the platform have been "insane" with threats and comments about her family since the video went viral. "It does make you step back and take a pause," she shared. "Like, is this really worth it for how crazy people react? And I would never want to put my family in danger, but I think a lot of it is just the keyboard pirates that are just back there behind their computer typing whatever they can to try to get more likes in the comments," Langdale article source: TikTok influencer targeted with criticism after viral video about 'unchic' fashion choices sparks backlash

The week in stocks: Lululemon gets stretched and is Tesla a TACO trade candidate?

Every weekend, the Financial Post breaks down the most interesting developments in this week's world of investing, from top performers to surprising analyst calls and stocks you should have on your radar. Here's this week's edition. Shares of Lululemon Athletica Inc. (LULU) fell nearly 20 per cent on Friday to close the week at US$265.27. The maker of fashionable workout gear and leisure clothing, which reported earnings on Thursday, said that sales fell in its Americas market in the first quarter and that it is already seeing lower traffic, especially in the United States as tariffs rattle price-conscious consumers. The company issued worsening guidance for the second quarter projecting sales and profit below analyst estimates and trimming its earning outlook for the year and also warned it would have to raise prices. Besides the tariff headwinds, the Vancouver-based athleisure company is also facing more competition and shifting fashion trends. A report from Veritas Investment Research last month had warned that Lululemon was exposed to the trade war on a few fronts, with 50 to 60 per cent of its sales coming from the U.S. and most of its manufacturing happening overseas. Following the earnings release, analysts at Deutsche Bank, Jeffries and Co., and JPMorgan Chase & Co., were among those who cuts their price targets for the company. Can Canada's premier stock market keep its hot streak going? That's the question prominent Bay Street economist David Rosenberg asked and answered in a note out this week. The S&P/TSX composite has been on a tear outpacing the S&P 500 by 12 percentage points over the last year. From June 2024, when Rosenberg noted 'the fortunes of the two indices began to diverge,' the TSX has risen 22.1 per cent compared to a 10 per cent gain for the S&P 500, in local currency, though the latter is ahead on a U.S. dollar basis. On the way to these gains, the TSX also hit a fresh record close above the 26,000 threshold on May 26. 'Victory laps aside, what matters most to investors at this time is where we see the outlook from here,' Rosenberg wrote. He thinks the conditions are in place for the TSX to keep rising, albeit at a slower pace. Among his reasons, Bank of Canada interest rate policy is more accommodative than U.S. monetary policy and with more cuts expected in the second half of the year that means more liquidity. 'Relative stability is being rewarded in Canada,' Rosenberg said as the outlook for earnings per share growth has held up while in the U.S. it's been scaled back. The so-called TACO trade — Trump Always Chickens Out — turned the United States president into a stock market punchline in recent weeks. Coined by Rob Armstrong, the Financial Times' U.S. market columnist, the term refers to the the president's track record of backpedalling, especially on tariffs, and suggests investors would be wise to fade the chaos that has followed Trump's more disruptive policy announcements. But will the theory apply to his personal feuds, too? That's a question Tesla Inc. (TSLA) shareholders might be asking after a social media punchfest erupted between the President and Elon Musk that left Tesla shares battered and bruised. After falling almost 15 per cent on Thursday, Tesla ended the week as the worst performing stock on the S&P 500, down 13.9 per cent, according to Bloomberg. While there were signs of de-escalation Friday, betting on a TACO-style reversal may still be high risk. 'Sell in May and go away,' is pithy investing advice that has been repeated for decades. But technical analysts at CIBC Capital Markets said investors were wise to pay no heed this year. 'The catchy phrase may have a nice rhyme, but May has been positive in the past five years with better follow-through in July,' analyst Sid Mokhtari and associate Michael Petipas wrote in a note this week. Mokhtari and Petipas have been assembling a Top 10 picks list for the better part of the past 15 years based on historical seasonal analysis. They said June 'still skewed a bit positive though slightly neutral' but that they are expecting more positive momentum for returns in July. Here are their top 10 picks for June based on expected total returns over the next four to six weeks, or possibly as far out as three months: Power Corp. (POW) Sun Life Financial Inc. (SLF) Exchange Income Corp. (EIF) MDA Space Ltd. (MDA) Eldorado Gold Corp. (ELD) NGEX Minerals Ltd. (NGEX) Artizia Inc. (ATZ) Parkland Corp. (PKI) Shopify Inc. (SHOP) Killam Apartment Real Estate Investment Trust (KMP-U) What is the bond market and why is everybody so worried about it? 5 ways the investment industry will change with AI Their top-10 ideas for May returned 4.5 per cent compared with a year to date return on the S&P/TSX composite index of 5.9 per cent, they said. • Email: gmvsuhanic@
