Gold prices hit new record high in Oman

Zawya23-04-2025

Muscat: Gold prices in Oman hit a record high on Tuesday morning, April 22, with 24-carat gold surpassing OMR 44 per gram for the first time amid global economic uncertainty.
At 3pm Oman time on Tuesday, 24K rose to OMR44.050 per gram.
Among the other variants, 22K, 21K and 18K surged to OMR 41.200, OMR38.250 per gram, and OMR 32.600 per gram, respectively.
Najeeb K, Regional Head, Malabar Gold & Diamonds, said, 'Despite gold prices reaching record highs this week, customer sentiment has remained resilient across our showrooms. Demand continues to be steady, highlighting the deep-rooted belief in gold's enduring value and its role as a secure and value appreciating investment.'
He also said while a small slowdown in purchases can be expected amongst price-conscious consumers, such dips are typically short-lived as consumers adapt to the new price range. 'Notably, there has been no significant rise in gold exchange transactions, indicating that customers are holding onto their gold assets — a strong sign of their trust in its lasting worth and stability,' he said.
Analysts say gold has traditionally been seen as a hedge against inflation and global economic uncertainty. 'With the current global economic situation marked by instability, investors are increasingly turning to gold as a safe and reliable asset. This trend has only grown stronger as gold continues to break records,' one of them said.
Rajesh Rokde, Chairman of the Gem and Jewellery Council of India (GJC), pointed to the ongoing trade war between some countries as one of the main reasons behind the surge in gold prices.
While short-term fluctuations may occur, the broader outlook for gold remains strong, with analysts expecting continued demand amid global economic uncertainty.

Omani fund replaces Russia's Alrosa in Angolan diamond miner Catoca

A subsidiary of Oman's sovereign wealth fund has replaced sanctions-hit Russian firm Alrosa as a shareholder in Angola's state-controlled diamond miner Catoca, according to the shareholder structure on Catoca's website. Angola had been under pressure to cease its long-standing partnership with the Russian state-controlled Alrosa, the world's largest producer of rough diamonds by volume, since 2022 when the West imposed sanctions on Alrosa for Moscow's role in the conflict in Ukraine. Catoca's shareholder structure showed that Endiama EP, Angola's national diamond company, owns 59% of Catoca, with Taadeen holding the remaining 41%, which used to be held by Alrosa. The Oman Investment Authority did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Alrosa confirmed that it had exited the shareholding, but provided no further details. Angola's Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, said the deal had been formalised on May 26. In November, Angola said having sanctions-hit Alrosa as a shareholder in the Angolan diamond miner was affecting "Angola's credibility in the international diamond market". Italian Pavilion dazzles visitors at 55th Watch and Jewellery Middle East Show

Sharjah: The 55th Watch and Jewellery Middle East Show, organised by Expo Centre Sharjah with support from the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), features a distinguished presence by the Italian pavilion that unveiled a rare collection of handcrafted diamond and jewellery pieces. Designed by some of Italy's most celebrated designers, the collection was revealed in Sharjah for the first time, drawing wide attention from global luxury jewellery connoisseurs. H.E Abdallah Sultan Al Owais, Chairman of SCCI, visited the Italian pavilion, accompanied by H.E Mohamed Rashid Ali Demas, SCCI Board Member; H.E Ali Hilal Al Hazami, SCCI Board Member; and Mona Sultan Al Suwaidi, Director of the Executive Office of the SCCI's Chairman and in charge of the Emirati Goldsmiths platform. The attendees explored the Italian pavilion's offerings, which encompassed a wide array of premium jewellery designs showcasing rare gemstones, including pure diamonds, vivid blue sapphires, and captivating emeralds, as well as meticulously crafted pieces made from 18-karat gold and superior-grade natural diamonds. The Italian pavilion at the 55th edition of the exhibition featured the participation of around 50 brands, marking a 15% growth over the previous edition. This makes Italy stand as the largest international presence at this year's show, which concludes tomorrow, Sunday. This expansion reflects Italy's growing global stature as the third-largest global supplier and leading European exporter of jewellery to the UAE, with exports surpassing €1.22 billion in 2024. In his remarks, Al Owais praised the solid economic and commercial ties between the UAE and Italy. He noted that the steady rise in Italian participation at the Watch and Jewellery Middle East Show underscores the UAE's strategic role as a dynamic global trade hub and a key gateway to regional markets. He added that the increasing number of Italian exhibitors is a testament to the rising investor confidence in the competitive business climate of Sharjah and the UAE at large. Italian exhibitors noted that that this year's collections were custom-designed and produced exclusively for the exhibition, with each piece offered in highly limited editions, typically no more than two per design. This exclusivity caters to discerning clients seeking rarity, sophistication, and superior quality. They also affirmed that all displayed items are entirely handcrafted, which significantly enhances the intrinsic value of each piece. In February 2025, Italy recorded jewellery exports of €238 million to the UAE, a 24% increase compared to the same period in 2024, maintaining a 5% share of the total import market. Italy continues to rank among the UAE's top suppliers of fine jewellery, a testament to the enduring appeal of Italian design and craftsmanship.
