Willie Mullins forces major ITV Racing coverage change in blockbuster title bout with Dan Skelton

Scottish Sun23-04-2025
A MAJOR change to ITV's coverage of Saturday's racing from Sandown has been confirmed - so punters can see Willie Mullins and Dan Skelton slug it out in their epic title fight.
A little over £57,000 separates the two trainers in their bid to come out on top in the season-long race.

Bookies make Mullins - who has entered an army of superstars at the Surrey track - just 2-7 to regain his crown.
He currently trails Skelton in the standings as he looks to make it two championships in a row.
But with hundreds of thousands up for grabs in the jumps season finale, ITV and racecourse bosses have pulled out all the stops in their efforts to give fans what they want.
All races have been moved forward 30 minutes, and the televised races switched to show the very last contest at its new time of 4.45pm.

A Jockey Club statement read: "This Saturday's bet365 Jump Finale fixture at Sandown Park will begin 30 minutes earlier than originally scheduled, to ensure racing fans can watch the thrilling conclusion to the Jump Trainers' Championship live on ITV 1.
"As the seventh and final race on Saturday's card, the bet365 Handicap Hurdle was due to start at 5.20pm, 20 minutes after ITV Racing go off air.
"However, Sandown Park Racecourse and the British Horseracing Authority have collaborated to bring forward the first race of the day, the bet365 Novices' Championship Final Handicap Hurdle, from 1.50pm to 1.20pm and the closing race from a 5.20pm to 4.45pm start.
"Further changes to Saturday's running order include moving the bet365 Josh Gifford Novices' Handicap Chase from the sixth to the second race, the bet365 Oaksey Chase from the second to the third, the bet365 Celebration Chase from the third to the fifth, the bet365 Select Hurdle from the fifth to the fourth and the bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase from the fourth to the sixth.

"The changes will ensure ITV Racing's 1.30pm to 5pm show covers the last six races of the season live, giving fans the chance to see the outcome of this year's Jump Trainers' Championship title race between Dan Skelton and Willie Mullins."
While Andrew Cooper, Clerk of the Course at Sandown Park, said: "Saturday promises to be a gripping end to the jumps season and we wanted racing fans who can't join us on the day to be able to watch all the drama unfold live on ITV Racing.
"We're incredibly grateful to the BHA, participants and the teams at Haydock Park and Leicester racecourses, who have moved races to accommodate our changes at very short notice.
"All of us at Sandown Park are excited about bringing the curtain down on what has been a fantastic season and showcasing its thrilling conclusion to fans on course and at home."

Mullins broke Skelton's heart with victory on the final day at Sandown 12 months ago.
British handler Skelton, whose brother Harry rides all his best horses, has had well over 100 more winners than Mullins this season.
But Mullins - who could block his biggest rival from having a runner in the feature race on Saturday - has struck when it mattered.
He was once again top trainer at Cheltenham Festival, had a 1-2-3 in the Grand National and followed that up with a 1-2 in the Scottish National.

Keely Hodgkinson smashes 23-year meeting record to win Diamond League 800m in final race before World Championships

Keely Hodgkinson smashes 23-year meeting record to win Diamond League 800m in final race before World Championships Keely Hodgkinson continued her remarkable return from injury as she smashed a 23-year-old meeting record in her last race before the World Championships. The Olympic champion destroyed the rest of the 800 metres field at Wednesday night's Diamond League event in the Swiss city of Lausanne, winning in a rapid 1min 55.69sec despite the wet conditions. Hodgkinson's time bettered the previous Lausanne best of 1:56.25 set by Maria Mutola in 2002. And it was the second fastest time in the world this year – behind only the 1:54.74 she ran in Silesia, Poland on Saturday in her first race since striking gold in Paris last summer. 'It was a shame about the weather, but I was really happy to run that in those conditions,' admitted a drenched Hodgkinson. The 23-year-old finished more than a second and a half clear of home favourite Audrey Werro, while her British team-mate and training partner Georgia Hunter Bell was third in 1:57.55. Keely Hodgkinson claimed victory in her last race before the World Championships The British star destroyed the rest of the 800 metres field to smash the meeting record Hodgkinson will now not race again until the World Championships in Tokyo, which start on September 13. But she will head to Japan as huge favourite for gold, following silvers at the previous editions of the event in 2022 and 2023. Hodgkinson's runs in Silesia and Lausanne were respectively the second and fourth fastest of her career. And they have come despite an injury-enforced 376-day absence from competition, having torn both her hamstrings this year. 'Things have gone really well,' added Hodgkinson about her return. 'The body's a lot stronger. All I've done is train all year, so I'm definitely in a really good place physically.' One of Hodgkinson's main rivals in Tokyo is likely to be Hunter Bell, who was disappointed with her third-place finish last night in Lausanne. 'I wanted a bit faster on the time,' said the Olympic 1500m bronze medallist, who trains with Hodgkinson in Manchester. 'I really want to run 1:55 this year and I think I am capable. It was a little bit cold and wet, but we are from England, so we cannot really complain.' Meanwhile, British sprint stars Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita finished fifth and seventh respectively in a women's 200m won by American Brittany Brown. Zharnel Hughes was fifth in the men's 100m in 10.09sec, with Jamaican Oblique Seville producing the performance of the night to win in 9.87sec, ahead of Olympic champion Noah Lyles in 10.02sec.

In a case of Claret vs Blue, the £750-a-bottle winery has opposed the Chelsea player's bid as they want to preserve their own image. 3 Cole Palmer's bid to trademark his Cold Palmer nickname has been challenged by posh French vineyard Château Palmer Credit: Getty 3 The vineyard is in France's Margaux region 3 One bottle of the firm's Cru Classé Margaux from 1970 was listed at £750 The hotshot, 23, wanted to trademark his shivering goal celebration and Cold Palmer nickname. But the application has been unexpectedly opposed by the revered vineyard in France's Margaux region. The footballer hoped to use the moniker for a range of goods such as toiletries and clothes. But the application also asks for legal protection to be allowed to market wine. His papers highlighted: 'Alcoholic beverages; alcoholic fruit beverages; pre-mixed alcoholic beverages; wines; spirits; liqueurs; alcoholic energy drinks; low alcoholic beverages; none of the aforesaid including wines complying with the specifications of the PDO Champagne.' And that alerted bosses at the French label, who have opposed the application. Lawyers at the government's Intellectual Property Office will rule on the potential clash after receiving representations from both sides. Drake hints Cole Palmer is inspiration behind his new album name as he shares brilliant video of Chelsea star The wine firm was founded in 1814 when British Army officer Charles Palmer acquired the estate, then known as Château de Gascq. He renamed it after himself and expanded the vineyards. Royal wine merchant Berry Bros & Rudd says of the firm: 'Château Palmer is a leading wine estate in Margaux. 'Within its appellation, Palmer is certainly the closest rival to its first growth neighbour, Ch. Margaux. 'Although officially ranked a Third Growth, at their best, the wines of Chateau Palmer are among the greatest anywhere in Bordeaux.' Yesterday, one bottle of the firm's Cru Classé Margaux from 1970 was listed at £750. Cole Palmer is not known to be a wine connoisseur, but did pretend to drink a pint of lager last season when one was thrown on the pitch when Chealsea played Copenhagen. He famously asked a waiter in a posh restaurant for ketchup before asking him if he had cooked the meal. His wine preferences are unknown. The star made his senior debut for Manchester City in 2020, and was in the team's squad to win the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League in 2023 before signing for Chelsea for £40million.

It's just days before the tournament at Flushing Meadows starts with the singles bracket beginning on Sunday. MacMillan has worked with world No1 Aryna Sabalenka in the past.
