I'm a Travel Advisor Specializing in Trips to Nicaragua and Panama—Here Are My Favorite Itineraries
Volcan Baru in Chiriqui, Panama.
Begin your trip in Panama City. Walk through the historic district of Casco Antiguo and explore the city's diverse culinary scene. Then head to Valle de Anton, a small, beautiful village inside of a volcanic crater before continuing northwest to the scenic highlands of Boquete where you'll find cloud forests, family-run coffee farms, and views of Volcan Baru. There are also plentiful ocean experiences on both sides of the country, whether you're interested in luxury resorts or amazing marine nature found at destinations like Coiba Island.
Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica.
Cross into Costa Rica overland at Paso Canoas or via a short regional flight. Stay at a secluded eco-lodge in the Osa Peninsula, where howler monkeys and scarlet macaws function as your wake-up call. Then head further north into the misty trails of Monteverde, where you can spot hummingbirds, sip hot chocolate, and experience local gastronomy in a tree-top dining garden. Finally, visit the Nicoya Peninsula, one of only five 'Blues Zones' in the world, where people are believed to live longer than the global average.
Cross into Nicaragua through the Peñas Blancas border and explore the Spanish colonial architecture of Granada. After this, head to Lake Nicaragua, the largest freshwater lake in Central America, for kayaking, boating, and paddle boarding around a massive body of water that's rich in biodiversity. If you're interested in more adventure, hike up Mombacho Volcano for panoramic views and jungle trails.
Belize is known for its beautiful islands, but its mainland—with its Mayan ruins, archaeological sites like Caracol and Xunantunich, and underground caves at Actun Tunichil Muknal—is an underrated destination for historical adventures. Visit the indigenous Garifuna people to learn about their traditional cooking and famous drumming. And, of course, if you're looking for pure relaxation, Belize has plenty of barefoot luxury resorts and private island stays.
Tikal National Park in Guatemala. From Belize it only takes a short flight or a scenic ground transfer to reach the UNESCO world heritage site of Tikal in Guatemala. The majestic Lake Atitlán is surrounded by volcanoes, and the villages nestled around the lake each have their own personality. In San Juan La Laguna, meet the weavers keeping old traditions alive. Then spend a night or two in Antigua, walking the cobblestone streets and shopping for beautiful textiles and handmade jewelry and accessories.

Google Flights can help you book a trip when you don't know where to go
It seems like Google is looking for a way to put AI into everything these days, and now its efforts have reached its airfare-booking service, Flights. On Thursday, Google announced that it's testing a new AI-powered Flight Deals tool, which could come in handy if you're planning a trip on a budget but aren't quite sure where you want to go yet. Instead of just entering your preferred airport and destination, Flight Deals takes a more open-ended approach. You can describe the kind of place you'd like to visit, and even get specific about how long you want to sit on a plane and what activities you'd like to do once you get there. Google will then use AI to come up with cheap flights that match your preferences. For example, you can search for 'a weekend countryside getaway with trail rides and kayaking' or a 'trip to Europe with great cheese and wine in May,' and see what pops up. While using Flight Deals, I found that it surfaced a mix of obvious vacation spots and some lesser-known locations. When looking for 'a tropical destination with snorkeling,' it showed me spots like Cozumel, Mexico; Nassau, Bahamas; and San Juan, Puerto Rico, which were predictable but viable suggestions. But a search for a 'trip to Europe with hiking' showed suggestions for a couple of cities that I wouldn't have thought of — Cluj-Napoca, Romania and Ljubljana, Slovenia — which is nice if you're looking for something off the beaten path. Still, some of the results I got weren't useful at all. When searching for 'a tropical weekend trip that's less than 5 hours away' from the Orlando airport, it yielded results for Miami and Key West, which may not be ideal for someone looking to travel outside the state. I also managed to stump it by searching for 'trips to Japan during cherry blossom season' — it said it found 'no deals' for this search. If you don't specify when you'd like to visit, Google will default to showing you flights within the next six months. You can also play around with some of the filters, like how many stops you want, or which airline you'd prefer — but the nice thing about this AI-powered revamp is that you don't have to. Despite some hiccups, I could still see myself trying out Flight Deals if I'm looking for travel ideas that aren't super out of my budget. I probably wouldn't entrust AI with planning out my entire trip, but having it generate some destination ideas, which I can then do more research on, doesn't hurt. Google Flight Deals is rolling out in beta to users in the US and Canada over the next week. You can find it on the standalone Flight Deals page, or in the top-left menu on Google Flights. Are You a 'Flexible' Traveler Looking for Deals? Google Flights Has a New AI Search Tool for You
Some travelers know roughly where, when, and how they'd like to fly, but are open to a variety of options to get the best deal. Google says it has come up with a solution to assist them in their quest. The Alphabet (GOOGL) unit on Thursday announced an AI-powered search tool within Google Flights called "Flight Deals," aimed at "flexible travelers whose number one goal is saving money on their next trip." "Instead of playing with different dates, destinations and filters to uncover the best deals, you can just describe when, where and how you'd like to travel—as though you're talking to a friend—and Flight Deals will take care of the rest," it said. Google said Flight Deals, which uses "advanced AI to understand the nuances of what you're looking for and identify matching destinations," will roll out over the next week in the U.S., Canada, and India. In another Google Flights update, the company said it's adding a new option for users to exclude basic economy fares for trips in the U.S. and Canada. Basic economy tickets—which major airlines offer to compete with low-cost carriers like Spirit and Frontier—often have lower fares but also come with significant restrictions, including limitations on carry-on baggage, seat selection, and changes or cancellations.
