Given up on Waiting For Godot? Never fear, you'll have a blast at Hingin' Oan Fir Googsie.
Running for four more nights only, John McColl's new play at Braw Venues on George Street opened to much hearty laughter and rapturous applause from a largely local audience, an element of the warm reception no doubt down to the presence of Braveheart and River City legend Jimmy Chisholm, leading the cast as Ghillie.
It wasn't just Chisholm's deft and generous performance, playing up the warm, comic humanity of the character that carried the show however, but compelling turns from the rest of the cast and an absurdist, laugh out loud funny script that had the house in fits from the outset while still addressing the challenges of dementia with dignity.

Winners of the 2025 World Pipe Band Championships revealed
More than 35,000 spectators attended the two-day event, which brings together the best pipers and drummers from around the globe to compete in what is described as the 'ultimate battle of the bands'. Scotland had the largest national contingent with 122 bands, followed by Northern Ireland with 25 bands, and the USA with 14 bands. Audiences from all over the world were able to view the highlights from the championships on both days via live streaming. This year, the major event included a dedicated youth competition. More than 1500 under-18s took part in the new feature, which celebrated and recognised young talent in piping and drumming. The grade winners were: Juvenile - George Watson's College; Novice Juvenile A - West Lothian Schools; Novice Juvenile B - St John's College Harare of Zimbabwe. The Comedy Army – Comedy on Prescription begins on Monday in Edinburgh
The Comedy Army are trying to spark change. On Monday, the worlds of comedy and football collaborate as Comedy Army and Simon Community Scotland, with support from Street Soccer and the Ripple, deliver a unique day of Comedy-on-Prescription – blending stand-up, live sport, music, workshops, and film. This one-day preview highlights the power of laughter, connection, and creativity in tackling one of the UK's most urgent social crises: homelessness. The movement kicks off in classic Scottish style with banter, boots, and a ball in a match at Meadowbank Sports Centre which starts at noon under captain Des Clarke. Live commentary will be provided by Bruce Devlin and Susie McCabe. The moment will then go nationwide on 8 October with Comedians Vs. Homelessness: a one-day comedy takeover in clubs, theatres, and venues across the nation during World Homeless Week, raising vital funds and awareness for homelessness prevention. The homelessness crisis we can't ignore UK-wide, over 400,000 people are experiencing homelessness, including 160,000 children rough sleeping in the UK is up 20% in the last year alone In Scotland, 33,619 households were assessed as homeless or threatened with homelessness in 2023/24—up 4% on last year. Culture Secretary announces £1.8m for arts and culture festivals
Scotland's Culture Secretary has announced £1.8m in grants for arts and culture festivals around the country. Angus Robertson said the money will be made available to non-profit arts and culture festivals 'at the heart of our culture sector and national life'. The Scottish Government said it is to help 'push creative boundaries and enhance their international reputation on the world stage'. Awards of up to £200,000 will be available in the first year and will be administered by Creative Scotland. The Government said the grants can be used for 'raising the international profile' of festivals and to support other areas vital to their success, such as for sector and talent development and to open access to educational groups. Mr Robertson said: 'Scotland has a wealth of outstanding festivals up and down the country. 'They are at the heart of our culture sector and national life, bringing us together through our enjoyment of art, literature, music and other performing arts. 'By increasing investment into festivals across the country we are supporting their commissions of and collaborations on new and exciting works, increasing opportunities for participation in creative pursuits and ensuring Scotland's cultural highlights can be enjoyed at home and abroad. 'The new fund is a direct result of discussions through the Strategic Partnership for Festivals, a focal point that brings together diverse representation from arts festivals and a broader range group of partners who support them. 'Collaboration with the sector is vital and this group will be crucial in supporting the implementation and development of this fund in the coming months.' Iain Munro, chief executive of Creative Scotland, added: 'Scotland's festivals are a vibrant celebration of our creativity and culture, recognised and enjoyed by local communities and people from around the world. 'The expanded festivals fund is a new opportunity to profile incredible creative work in every corner of the country and support other areas vital to success – from sector and talent development to further experimentation and space to develop ambitions with specific groups and communities. 'Working with festivals nationwide, this investment will support artists, widen community engagement and further strengthen Scotland's impressive international reputation.'
