Only 2 UAPA cases filed between 2018 and 2022 quashed: Govt
In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai presented data from the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report on "Crime in India", which showed that 6,503 individuals were charge-sheeted under the UAPA during the period, while 252 people were convicted for the offences.
The country-wide data presented by the Minister showed that two cases were quashed in Kerala in 2022.
Law enforcement agencies arrested a total of 8,947 individuals under the UAPA between 2018 and 2022, with 2,633 arrests in Jammu and Kashmir, followed by 2,162 in Uttar Pradesh.
According to the data, 1,421 arrests were made in the country under the anti-terror law in 2018, 1,948 in 2019, 1,321 in 2020, 1,621 in 2021 and 2,636 in 2022.

The Crime Branch of Odisha police has arrested two persons linked to Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in connection with a student's self-immolation on the campus of F.M. Autonomous College, Balasore, leading to her death last month. Crime Branch, which was tasked with the investigation into death that sparked nationwide uproar over girl's suicide, had picked up Subhra Sambit Nayak, ABVP's State Joint Secretary and Jyotiprakash Biswal, who sustained injuries while rescuing the girl, late night of Sunday. The 20-year-old girl had accused her teacher Samira Sahoo of harassing her. However, her repeated grievances had not been redressed. She had finally set herself on fire after rushing out from office of Principal on July 12. Two days after, with 95% burn injuries, she died in AIIMS, Bhubaneswar. Earlier in several video footages, Subhra Sambit Nayak, who had graduated from college, was seen arguing with principal on behalf of the deceased girl and demanded auctioned against the accused teacher. Both accused were produced before local court and were remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. During investigation, Crime Branch officials had questioned students, teachers, parents and journalists and examined video evidences during past several weeks. Some more arrests are likely to be made in the case. A few persons linked to National Students' Union of India, student wing of Congress, may also come in the ambit of probe as they had posted remarks on the girl on social media sites. The self-immolation by girl had raised serious questions about existence of functional internal complaint committees mandated under Internal Committee mandated under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (POSH) and the University Grants Commission (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal of Sexual Harassment of Women Employees and Students in Higher Educational Institutions) Regulations, 2015. Following girl's suicide, Opposition political parties had cornered the Mohan Majhi Government over the issue of safety of women in the State. The State government had subsequently in series of directions ordered to come up with internal complaint committees in all educational institutes. New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday called on President Droupadi Murmu separately within hours at the Rashtrapati Bhavan here. It was not known the reasons behind the subsequent meetings of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister with the President. There have been no words either from the Prime Minister's Office or the Home Minister's office about the meetings other than two posts on 'X' from the Rashtrapati Bhavan. "Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan," the Rashtrapati Bhavan said on 'X'. Hours later, the Rashtrapati Bhavan again wrote on 'X', "Union Minister for Home Affairs and Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan." This was the first meeting of the Prime Minister with the President after his recent visit to the United Kingdom and the Maldives. The meetings came against the backdrop of the logjam in Parliament over the Opposition's demand for a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections in the state. Except discussions in both Houses on Operation Sindoor, Parliament has seen little business ever since the Monsoon session began on July 21. Also, the Lok Sabha last week approved the extension of the President's rule in Manipur for six more months, while the Rajya Sabha is yet to take up the motion for discussion. The President's rule was imposed in the Northeastern state on February 13. The Prime Minister's meeting with the President also came days after US President Donald Trump announced 25 per cent tariffs on exports from India and an unspecified penalty because of New Delhi's purchases of Russian military equipment and oil. The meetings also came nearly two weeks after Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21 tendered his resignation as Vice President to the President citing health grounds. The Vice President also functions as the chairman of Rajya Sabha. The Election Commission had last week announced that election of Vice President will take place on September 9. The electoral college for the Vice-Presidential election comprises all elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and all members of the Lok Sabha.

HC orders crackdown on illegal bungalows, encroachments in Yeoor Hills
THANE: The Bombay High Court has directed the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) and the Thane Collector to initiate strict action against encroachments and unauthorised constructions in Yeoor Hills — a forested stretch within the Sanjay Gandhi National Park — including bungalows and commercial establishments allegedly built by local politicians and private entities. Yeoor Hills, located on the fringes of Thane and Borivali, has seen a surge in illegal developments in recent years — including upscale bungalows, bars, and restaurants — sparking concerns about forest degradation and displacement of tribal communities. (Hindustan Times) The order was passed by a division bench of chief justice Alok Aradhe and justice Sandeep Marne while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by tribal rights activists. The petition alleged large-scale illegal transfers of tribal land, unauthorised construction of bungalows, and encroachments on public land within the protected forest zone. The petitioners also sought restoration of tribal lands to their original owners, invoking the provisions of the Maharashtra Restoration of Lands to Scheduled Tribes Act, 1974. During the hearing, the TMC informed the court that a 2009 survey had identified 219 unauthorised structures in Yeoor Hills, and that notices had been issued. However, the civic body was unable to provide details on the action taken since then. Taking note of the submissions, the court observed, 'No person has a right to encroach on public land or indulge in unauthorised construction.' While noting that the question of whether a particular structure is legal or not cannot be decided under writ jurisdiction, the court emphasised that it was the duty of the competent authorities to enforce the law. The bench directed the Thane municipal commissioner and the collector to issue fresh notices to all encroachers and parties responsible for unauthorised constructions. After granting them an opportunity to be heard, the officials must take appropriate action, including demolition of structures found to be illegal. Regarding the restoration of tribal land, the court held that affected individuals are free to pursue legal remedies under the 1974 Act to reclaim their ancestral land.
