Beginner jiu-jitsu student awarded $56M after being paralyzed while sparring with instructor ‘Sinistro'
A jiu-jitsu student has been awarded $56 million after he was left paralyzed from the neck down by a black-belt instructor known as 'Sinistro.'
Jack Greener, 30, was a beginner white belt sparring with his teacher, second-degree black belt Francisco Iturralde, 33, when he suffered the catastrophic injury in 2018, crushing his cervical vertebrae and rendering him a quadriplegic.
Video showed the beginning on all fours when his instructor flips him forward, awkwardly twisting him face down and twisting his neck.

'The black belt instructor did a technique that placed his entire body weight on Greener's neck, causing him to instantly fall limp and lose all function of his limbs,' said BJJ legend Rener Gracie, who was called as an expert witness in the case.
Greener was hospitalized for several months, suffering multiple strokes as a result of his injuries — which came just weeks before he was due to graduate from college, his attorneys said.

He sued the Del Mar Jiu Jitsu club in San Diego for the injuries he blamed on Iturralde, who earned the nickname 'Sinistro,' or 'Sinister,' for his 'dynamic, aggressive grappling style,' according to his bio on a site selling online instructionals.
Greener, who is now a mountain climber and motivational speaker, was first awarded $46 million by a San Diego jury in 2023.

The studio appealed the decision to the California Supreme Court, which declined to overturn the judgment this week. The verdict was also affirmed by a state appellate panel late last year.
With post-judgment interest, the award now exceeds $56 million, Greener's attorneys said.
The final appellate court's ruling 'cements a critical legal victory not only for our client, but also for injured athletes across California by reaffirming that sports instructors and facilities may be held accountable when they unreasonably increase risks beyond those inherent in the sport,' said one of Greener's attorneys, Rahul Ravipudi

Prior to his work as a gardener—while studying for a degree in politics and law—Fugate worked at an H-E-B supermarket in Austin, Texas, as a 'Cross Functional Team Member.' According to his LinkedIn, he would 'perform various activities around every department of the store, fulfilling key duties contributing to store operations.' Since leaving college, Fugate has had a meteoric rise in the political world, having served as an 'advance team member' on President Donald Trump's 2024 campaign, according to his LinkedIn page. An avowed Republican, he also interned at the Heritage Foundation, the think tank behind Project 2025, and for Texas Representatives Terry Wilson and Steve Allison. Fugate was reportedly hired as a 'special assistant' in an immigration office at the DHS in February, according to ProPublica. He then took over CP3 after its previous director quit. Fugate did not immediately respond to The Daily Beast's request for comment. 'Tom Fugate has performed well in his current role as a Confidential Assistant in our Immigration & Border Security suboffice,' a senior DHS official told The Daily Beast. 'Due to his success, he has been temporarily given additional leadership responsibilities in the Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships office (CP3). This is a credit to his work ethic and success on the job.' Fugate set up a political Instagram account last year, where his profile contains the motto, 'Men used to do great things. I believe they still can.' He has posted a number of photos from the campaign trail and his time in Washington, D.C. He also posted a video that showed him with a host of lesser lights in the Republican party, including the disgraced former congressman Madison Cawthorn, Kennedy Center President Ric Grenell, and MAGA personality Riley Gaines. He is also pictured with Texas Governor Greg Abbott and former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. An older account in the name of Trey Fugate on X suggests that he was a fan of LEGO and Star Wars. He used the social media account to call on Texas politicians 'to protect the international affairs budget!' and 'Help the global poor, save lives.' That was just two years before he launched his new MAGA personality with the thomas4texas Instagram account, saying: 'Legend has it that Thomas Fugate didn't start the fire 🔥, but that is always been burning since the world's been turning 🤔. Welcome all to my new account for public service, community involvement, and politics 🇺🇸. Recently things have got to the point where I felt like my main account has become too focused on politics, so I wanted to switch things up!' The plethora of selfies and portraits plastered across his social media accounts suggest that the wryly arched eyebrow Fugate chose for his LinkedIn profile—a photograph taken in front of the seal of the Department of Homeland Security—was very much a knowing choice from a young man who seems to think he is destined for the top.

Newsboys Respond to Sexual Assault Allegations Against Ex-Singer Michael Tait: ‘We Are Horrified, Heartbroken & Angry'
Contemporary Christian Music group Newsboys responded to recent allegations of sexual assault and drug use against former lead singer Michael Tait, who abruptly stepped away from the group in January. On Wednesday, The Roys Report published what it referred to as a two-and-a-half-year investigation into allegations against Tait. The outlet claims it spoke with more than 50 sources, including three people who claim that Tait groomed and sexually assaulted them while touring or at Tait's home. The accusers allege that the incidents took place between 2004 and 2014. Multiple people in the report also claimed that Tait was involved in drug use. This decision does not come lightly and has been a shock to even myself, but amidst prayer and fasting, I have clarity that this is the right decision.' He joined Newsboys as their lead singer in 2009 following the exit of Peter Furler. Tait is also known for his founding role in the groundbreaking CCM group DC Talk from 1988-2001. Man's body recovered from East River amid search for 2 teens feared drowned
A body of a man in his 30s was found floating in the East River early Friday as cops continue to search for the remains of two people feared drowned last week, officials said. NYPD Harbor Unit officers were called to the waters near the Brooklyn Bridge just after 6 a.m., where they found the unidentified person floating in the current. The body was brought to Pier 16 in lower Manhattan. Cops said the victim appeared to be a man in his 30s, but an autopsy needed to be conducted to determine the victim's identity. Cops on Friday were still looking for the remains of Brandon Pino, the high school senior who jumped off the Staten Island Ferry last weekend. The 17-year-old Port Richmond boy left a goodbye note on Instagram before taking the 9:30 a.m. ferry from Staten Island to Manhattan on Saturday, his family says. Police were also still searching for a 15-year-old girl who went into the East River off Randalls Island and never resurfaced on May 30.
