Five Indians kidnapped in attack in Niger
Reuters reported on Saturday that 12 soldiers had been killed in the attack a day earlier near the village of Sakoira in the tri-border region, where the West African Sahel countries of Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali meet.
The victims were working for an Indian company providing services to Niger's Kandadji dam project, the two security sources said.
The local government of the Indian state of Jharkhand said in a statement that the five citizens had been working in the Tillaberi region.
It said all five were from Jharkhand and that the Indian embassy in Niger had approached Nigerian authorities for support in securing their release.
The armed men who carried out the kidnapping have not been officially identified, but last month Niger blamed the EIGS group, an Islamic State affiliate, for an attack on a mosque near the tri-border area in which at least 44 civilians were killed.
Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso are fighting a jihadist insurgency linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State that spun out of a Tuareg rebellion in northern Mali in 2012 and later spread to its neighbouring countries.
Kidnappings appear to have intensified this year, with an Austrian woman kidnapped in January and a Swiss citizen earlier in April, both in Niger. Also in January, four Moroccan truck drivers went missing on the border between Niger and Burkina Faso.

Russian forces hold well over half of Zaporizhzhia region in Ukraine's southeast. But Kyiv maintains control of the region's main administrative centre and its attacks have periodically knocked out electricity in Russian-held areas. Russia in 2022 annexed the Zaporizhzhia region, along with neighbouring Kherson as well as Donetsk and Luhansk in Ukraine's east, about seven months after invading its smaller neighbour. "The reason for the power cuts in Zaporizhzhia region is yet another enemy terrorist drone attack on high-voltage equipment," Moscow-appointed Governor Yevgeny Balitsky wrote on the Telegram messaging app. Balitsky said repair crews were restoring power and switching affected areas to reserve lines. He said the work was made more difficult "by the danger of repeat strikes and by darkness". Ukrainian shelling and drone attacks knocked out power in June for more than 24 hours to at least 700,000 residents across the area. That attack appeared to be the largest of its kind on Russian-held territory since the war began. The Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, Europe's largest with six reactors, was operating as normal, unaffected by the power cuts, the plant's director of communications, Yevgenia Yashina, told Russia's RIA news agency. The plant produces no electricity but needs power for cooling and monitoring systems to maintain safety. Ukraine and Russia regularly accuse each other of staging attacks on the plant, seized by Russian forces in the first weeks of the February 2022 invasion. In the part of Kherson region under Ukrainian control, Governor Vyacheslav Prokudin said in a Telegram post that Russian shelling killed a resident of a small town north of the regional capital. And the governor of Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region, to the north, Serhiy Lysak, also said on Telegram that Russian shelling killed a resident of Nikopol, a frequent target of Moscow's attacks on the north bank of the Dnipro River. Millions take part in Moscow festival celebrating Indias culture
Record crowds joined a festival marking South Asian nations 78th independence India Day festivities in Moscow last week recorded 2.7 million visitors, according to the organizers. The four-day celebration in the Russian capital mixed yoga sessions, dance performance and Holi traditions with official ceremonies and awards. The festival was attended by India's Ambassador to Russia Vinay Kumar, Moscow Government Minister Sergey Cheremin, and officials from dozens of countries, according to festival founder and President of the Indian Cultural and National Center Sita Sammy Kotwani. This year's program included the launch of the India Day awards, the jury for which featured Anton Kobyakov, an adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova and Mosfilm director Karen Shakhnazarov. Awards were presented in ten categories such as yoga, Ayurveda, literature, business and humanitarian initiatives. The festival coincided with India's 79th Independence Day, marked on 15 August. The date commemorates India's liberation from British rule in 1947 and its emergence as a sovereign state. Independence Day is among the country's key national holidays and is observed annually with flag-raising ceremonies, cultural events and tributes to leaders of the independence movement. The event also coincided with an official visit to Russia by Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, who is scheduled to hold talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Thursday. As part of the celebrations and to highlight close ties between the two countries, landmark buildings along Moscow's Novy Arbat Avenue were lit in the colors of the Indian flag, the Indian Embassy said in a post on X.
