LYON : A 29-year-old man was fatally shot overnight in the eastern French city of Dijon, the local prosecutor said today, adding that a gangland killing was suspected.
The southern Chenove district where the killing occurred was known for drug trafficking, the prosecutor, Olivier Caracotch, said in a statement.
'A dozen shell casings used by an automatic weapon' were found in the street where the killing took place, he said.
Nearby vehicles and a third-floor apartment were hit by some of the shots, but there were no other casualties, he said.
The police criminal investigation unit determined the shooter had approached a group that included the victim around midnight, opened fire, then escaped by car, Caracotch said.
The man killed lived in the city and had no police record for drug-related crimes, he said, adding that the investigation opened was for organised gang murder and criminal association.

Cook faces murder charge for stabbing victim in Senawang home

SEREMBAN, Aug 19 — A cook was charged in the Magistrate's Court here today with the murder of a man in a house in Senawang. However, no plea was recorded from Zulazren Zakariah, 31, after the charge was read out before Magistrate Nurul Saqinah Rosli, as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court. Zulazren is charged with murdering Muhammad Amirul Rashid Mohd Niza, 28, by stabbing him on the chest at about 6.50pm at a house in Taman Sri Pagi, Senawang, here last August 11. The charge, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, provides the death penalty or imprisonment for not less than 30 years but not more than 40 years and, if not sentenced to death, will be subject to not less than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction. No bail was allowed, and the court set October 17 for mention. Deputy public prosecutor Nik Nur 'Aqilah Syarfa Nik Zaidi appeared for the prosecution, while Zulazren was unrepresented. Meanwhile, in another case, Magistrate Nurul Saqinah sentenced Mohd Khairol Mohd Abu, 40, to two years in prison after he pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt to his wife. He was charged with committing the offence at about 1pm in a house in Lenggeng on June 6 this year. — Bernama

Melaka court jails Singaporean 72 years for murdering wife, dismembering stepson

MELAKA, Aug 19 — A Singaporean man was yesterday sentenced to 72 years in prison and 24 strokes of the cane by the Melaka High Court after being found guilty of murdering his wife and stepson, whose dismembered remains were discovered in a bushy area six years ago. Judge Datuk Anselm Charles Fernandis handed down the sentence on Shahrul Nizam Zuraimy, 36, at the end of the defence case. The court ordered him to serve 36 years' imprisonment and 12 strokes for each charge, with the sentences running consecutively, starting from the date of arrest on October 11, 2019. In his oral judgment, Anselm described the accused's actions as cruel, including placing his wife's head on the ceiling of their house, with no reasonable justification, apparently to conceal the crime and the victims' identities. 'The court considered the concept of life for life, as well as the emotions of the victims' family members. However, it must also look at the case as a whole and the wider public interest. 'The court also took into account the defence's submissions, aggravating factors presented by the prosecution, and the victims' impact statements from the mother and sister of the deceased, who testified to suffering emotional trauma and health problems; besides the victim's surviving children also growing up without a mother's love,' he said. Shahrul Nizam was charged with two counts of murder for causing the deaths of his wife, Norfazera Bidin, 27, and her son, Muhammad Iman Ashraf Abdullah, 11, at a house in Taman Merdeka Jaya, Batu Berendam, Melaka Tengah, between 6pm on October 6 and 7.30am on October 7, 2019. The charges, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, carry the death penalty or a maximum 40-year prison sentence. If the death penalty is not imposed, whipping of no fewer than 12 strokes is mandatory. Earlier, Norfazera's mother and sister, in their impact statements, urged the court to impose a commensurate sentence, including the death penalty, citing the trauma endured by the family and the brutality of the killings. Deputy Public Prosecutors Mohd Asri Abd Rahman Sidik and Nur Syazwanie Marizan also sought either the death penalty or consecutive prison sentences, stressing that the accused had betrayed his role as protector of the victims. 'The accused was supposed to protect the victims, but instead killed them, including a child who was his stepson. The court must balance public interest with the severity of the cruelty committed,' they argued. The prosecution also noted that the factor of regret raised by the defence should be weighed carefully, as although the accused eventually surrendered, he initially misled the victims' family about their whereabouts and fled to Singapore after the crime. Defence lawyers Andrew Lourdes and Chua Yong Yi pleaded for leniency, arguing that their client had repented and regretted his actions, and should be given a second chance. — Bernama

Unemployed man pleads guilty to torching MBJB tow truck in Johor Bahru, faces up to 14 years' jail

JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 19 — A 31-year-old unemployed man pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court here today on charges of committing mischief by setting fire to a parked Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) tow truck last Friday. Wan Muhammad Nasrul W Ahmad admitted guilt after the charge was read out before Judge Thalha Bachok @ Embok Mok. Based on the charge sheet, the accused was charged with committing mischief by using petrol, with the intent to cause destruction by setting fire to a tow truck belonging to MBJB, causing damages of RM24,000. Wan Muhammad Nasrul allegedly committed the act at MBJB's vehicle storage depot at Lot 1, Johor Bahru Waterfront here at 11.07am last Friday. He was charged under Section 435 of the Penal Code for causing mischief by fire, which carries a maximum imprisonment of 14 years and a fine if convicted. When the court requested that the closed-circuit television (CCTV) of the alleged incident be viewed, Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Fatimah Mamu informed that it could not be presented. The court then postponed sentencing for tomorrow to allow the CCTV footage to be presented and viewed in court. The court later allowed bail of RM7,000 with one surety and additional conditions, including to avoid harassing the victim and witnesses. Deputy Public Prosecutor R. Navina acted for the prosecution, while the accused was unrepresented. Last Friday, a CCTV footage was widely circulated on social media where a man was seen splashing petrol a MBJB tow truck before torching it. The accused, who was dissatisfied with MBJB for towing his car, was later arrested by police. An aluminium can and a lighter was also seized from him.
