LYON : A 29-year-old man was fatally shot overnight in the eastern French city of Dijon, the local prosecutor said today, adding that a gangland killing was suspected.
The southern Chenove district where the killing occurred was known for drug trafficking, the prosecutor, Olivier Caracotch, said in a statement.
'A dozen shell casings used by an automatic weapon' were found in the street where the killing took place, he said.
Nearby vehicles and a third-floor apartment were hit by some of the shots, but there were no other casualties, he said.
The police criminal investigation unit determined the shooter had approached a group that included the victim around midnight, opened fire, then escaped by car, Caracotch said.
The man killed lived in the city and had no police record for drug-related crimes, he said, adding that the investigation opened was for organised gang murder and criminal association.

Cop to go on trial for murder of Nahel M
Nahel M's death provoked several nights of unrest in Nanterre and other cities across France. (AFP pic) PARIS : A French police officer charged with murder in the deadly shooting of a teenager in 2023 that sparked violent protests across the country will go on trial next year, the Nanterre prosecutor's office said on Tuesday. In March, prosecutors requested that one of two officers investigated over the June 27 shooting of 17-year-old Nahel M in the Paris suburb of Nanterre be put on trial. A charge of complicity in murder against the other officer was dropped. Investigating judges on Tuesday decided the trial of the officer, identified as Florian M, should take place in the Assize Court of the Hauts-de-Seine. Depending on whether there are appeals, the trial could take place in the second or the third quarter 2026, the statement from the Nanterre prosecutor's office said. Neither the policeman's lawyer, nor the lawyer for Nahel's family could be immediately reached for comment. The police officer fired at Nahel after the latter failed to comply with an order to stop his car. The boy, of North African descent, later died from his wounds. A video shared on social media, verified by Reuters, showed two police officers beside the car, a Mercedes-AMG, with one firing his weapon as the driver pulled away. Nahel's death and the video were shared on social media, drawing widespread anger and provoking several nights of unrest in Nanterre and other cities across France.

‘Datuk Seri' turns himself in after alleged pistol-whipping of woman in Penang
Timur Laut police chief Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the case is being investigated for voluntarily causing hurt using a dangerous weapon and carrying a firearm while drunk. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : A man with a 'Datuk Seri' title has been arrested by police in George Town, Penang, on suspicion of pistol-whipping a woman motorist on Sunday. Timur Laut police chief Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the 28-year-old victim, a saleswoman, lodged a report over the incident which allegedly took place while she was driving on Jalan Kelawei at 2.30am on Sunday. The incident is believed to have stemmed from a misunderstanding between the suspect and victim, Buletin TV3 reported Rozak as saying. He added that the suspect, 41, was arrested at 9.30am today after turning himself in at the district police headquarters. 'The victim suffered severe injuries to her nose and eyes after being struck by the suspect with the pistol's handle. 'Police have seized a pistol, its magazine and the man's licence for possession of the firearm and ammunition,' said Rozak. The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt using a dangerous weapon and Section 34 of the Arms Act 1960 for carrying a firearm while drunk. The victim was said to be driving towards Tanjung Tokong with two friends when her car skidded and veered into the middle lane before continuing to drive. She then realised she was being tailed by a black Mercedes Benz, which later overtook her and blocked her in front of a petrol station on Jalan Kelawai. The suspect then allegedly placed his pistol into the victim's mouth before striking her several times with the weapon. In her police report, the victim claimed her assailant was drunk.
