South Fulton rallies to help family of Lt. Helio Garcia after his tragic death
The Brief
Lt. Helio Garcia, a South Fulton police officer, was killed in the line of duty when another vehicle collided with his patrol car.
The Police Benevolent Foundation is providing financial support to Garcia's family, including a death benefit and a fundraiser for additional assistance.
A funeral service for Lt. Garcia will be held at World Changers Church International, with a motorcade escort planned.
SOUTH FULTON, Ga. - The metro Atlanta and state law enforcement communities are working to honor the life of Lt. Helio Garcia.
The South Fulton police officer was killed in the line of duty late Tuesday night.
The backstory
Authorities said Garcia died around 11:30 p.m. on April 15 when another vehicle veered into his patrol car on Flat Shoals Road. He leaves behind a wife and three children.
The loss has deeply affected the South Fulton community. In response, the Police Benevolent Foundation has stepped in to support Garcia's family. The organization is providing a death benefit equal to one year's salary, up to $70,000, and has launched a fundraiser to deliver additional financial assistance as quickly as possible.
What they're saying
"It's so rapid and sudden that the family is just consumed with trying to get through the sudden loss and grief and for the funeral and what we want to do is provide financial resources as quick as we can to help with that burden so they don't have to worry about the financial implications of what they're going through," said Randy Byrd, director of the Police Benevolent Foundation.
Byrd said funds will be distributed to Garcia's family as donations come in to prevent any delay in providing support.
What's next
Lt. Garcia will be honored at a funeral service on Friday at noon at World Changers Church International. A motorcade escort will begin staging at 11:15 a.m. in the parking lot of 4855 Old National Highway in College Park.
What you can do
Family and friends have also organized a separate fundraiser through GoFundMe to support Garcia's wife and children. The PBA of Georgia and the Police Benevolent Association are also taking monetary donations.

Search group warns against fake fundraiser exploiting two children missing in N.S.
HALIFAX - Halifax Search and Rescue is warning against fraudsters impersonating their group who claim they'll use donated cash to search for two missing children. Paul Service, director of the volunteer organization, says a GoFundMe campaign attempted to raise $100,000 to fund a drone to search for four-year-old Jack Sullivan and six-year-old Lilly Sullivan. A large-scale search was launched for the two children after they disappeared on May 2 in Lansdowne Station, N.S., and there have been two, smaller efforts since then involving volunteer searchers. The non-profit group says it doesn't normally request donations through GoFundMe and doesn't base its campaigns on particular searches. Service says a representative from GoFundMe contacted him to say it was taking down the site and investigating after the campaign was reported on CBC. He says that it is disheartening for his group to have to cope with scams, as it may discourage the public from donating to his group's legitimate fundraising efforts. Body found off Dungeness believed to be that of missing kayaker
A body has been pulled from the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and the Clallam County Sheriff's Office believes it is that of a kayaker who went missing in May. On May 13, 21-year-old Ty Coone called 911 for himself to report that the was drowning and struggling in the water. His phone's GPS placed him north of Cline Spit. Deputies say Coone's kayak, life vest, and paddle were recovered that day, but he was no where to be found. The search and rescue team says they believe Coone was fishing from his kayak when he fell in. The U.S. Coast Guard was called in to help with the search. A body was pulled off Dungeness on June 1. Law enforcement will need to wait until official dental comparisons confirm that the body is Coone's, but they believe it is. Coone's friend, Bryson Morris, started a GoFundMe for his family. 'Ty was one of a kind—full of life, laughter, and love. From dirtbike tracks to bonfire nights, he brought people together and made every moment unforgettable,' He wrote. 'His spirit, humor, and kindness touched so many lives, and now it's our turn to give back and lay him to rest with the love and dignity he deserves.' The hope is to raise enough for a burial and headstone. Coone's family held a Sequim memorial service on May 31 at Sequim Community Church. Another local Celebration of Life is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, June 14 at the big barn at 702 Kitchen-Dick Road in Sequim, with music, food and a slideshow, according to the Sequim Gazette.
