Minister for School Education Madhu Bangarappa has said he was also shocked to know the number of his community people in the Socio-Economic and Educational Survey conducted by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes.
'When the copies of the survey's findings were handed over in the State Cabinet, I was shocked looking at the number of people belonging to our community. However, the survey was scientific,' said the Minister in a press conference in Shivamogga on Wednesday.
Mr. Madhu Bangarappa said that, like him, leaders of many communities had felt that the population shown with respect to their castes in the survey report was less. Many commented that the survey was unscientific and did not cover the entire population.
'The survey is scientific. They have collected data from individuals with respect to 54 questions. However, many people who have actually answered the survey have forgotten undergoing that survey. I wish a system should be made available for the individuals to access the individual data sheets at the taluk offices,' he said.
Regarding the comments made by Congress leaders Shamanur Shivashankarappa and others, Mr. Madhu Bangarappa said that people had expressed different opinions. Similarly, the public should have access to the complete report and discuss it. 'I believe there is a need to explain the process of how the survey was conducted,' he said.
Answering a question on the commission's recommendations based on the survey findings, the Minister opined the recommendations were in favour of all sections of people. 'The report recommends enhancement of reservation for all backward classes. It would help every community,' he added.
Sagar MLA Belur Gopala Krishna, Bilkis Banu, MLC, District Congress Committee president R. Prasanna Kumar and others were present at the press conference.

Darbhanga: The suspension of district welfare officer (DWO) Alok Kumar following Congress MP Rahul Gandhi 's alleged unauthorised visit to the Ambedkar Kalyan Chhatravas (AKC) hostel in Darbhanga on May 15 has sparked controversy. Gandhi was scheduled to address a gathering at the local town hall, for which official permission had been granted, but instead proceeded to the hostel with a large number of party workers.
