Insult to Dalits: Row over video showing Lalu Yadav's feet near Ambedkar photo

India Today9 hours ago

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav has landed in the eye of a political storm after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) posted a video purportedly showing a portrait of Dr B R Ambedkar placed at his feet during his 78th birthday celebrations. In the latest developments, the State Scheduled Caste Commission on Sunday issued a notice to Lalu Yadav, seeking a written explanation within 15 days. The notice, issued by Commission Vice-Chairman Devendra Kumar, states that failure to respond within the stipulated time frame could invite legal action.
advertisementPOLITICAL REACTIONSThe incident has triggered widespread outrage across the political spectrum and among Dalit rights activists. BJP has accused the RJD of consistently disrespecting Ambedkar and Dalit sentiments. BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla claimed the incident exposed RJD's 'non-constitutional ideology.'
"The insult to Scheduled Castes and Dalits represents the real identity of the RJD and its allies, Congress and the INDI Alliance. The way BR Ambedkar's picture was placed under the feet of Lalu Prasad Yadav and the indecency shown with the image of Ambedkar, this is the original character of RJD,' Poonawalla said in an interview with news agency ANI. He further alleged that for the RJD, 'family and power' matter more than the Constitution or social justice.Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Samrat Choudhary echoed similar sentiments and condemned the act as an 'unpardonable insult' and called it a 'dark chapter in Bihar's political history.' He demanded a public apology from Lalu Yadav.advertisementFormer Bihar Chief Minister and Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi too slammed the RJD chief, stating, 'Placing Dr Ambedkar's portrait at one's feet is not just an insult to our icon, but to all Dalits. Even Lalu's own community will not tolerate this.'The JD(U), RJD's former ally, also denounced the incident. Party general secretary Shyam Rajak, a former RJD leader himself, called the act "petty and unforgivable.' Speaking at a press conference, he said, 'The people of Bihar will not forgive this display of arrogance and disrespect toward Babasaheb.'Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad termed the act a 'grave insult to the Constitution' and said it exposed a 'feudal mindset.' LJP (Ram Vilas) MP Shambhavi Choudhary accused the RJD of 'continuously misleading and disrespecting Dalit and Mahadalit communities.'Political strategist-turned-activist Prashant Kishor also waded into the controversy, targeting the Congress for its silence. At a press conference in Muzaffarpur, he challenged Rahul Gandhi to condemn Lalu Yadav. 'The Congress has become a sidekick of RJD in Bihar. If Rahul Gandhi wants to prove otherwise, let him issue one statement criticizing Lalu Prasad,' Kishor said.TEJASHWI YADAV DEFENDS FATHERMeanwhile, RJD leader and former Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav came to his father's defense, accusing the BJP of spreading lies and politicising the issue.advertisement"These (BJP) people have nothing to do with Baba Saheb, the Constitution, and Reservation. Lalu Yadav has installed many statues of Baba Saheb Ambedkar in Bihar. We are the people who believe in Ambedkar's ideology. The BJP only spread lies," Tejashwi said. He added that his father, despite being 78 and ailing, continues to work tirelessly and meet people. 'He works 10 hours a day. Yet they target him with such baseless allegations.'Must Watch

‘Feels like a festival at home'

Lucknow: Among the recruits were those who became the first govt employee in their family. "It feels like a festival at home. People once said govt jobs weren't possible without bribes. But today, I stand here as proof that they were wrong," said Roshni, daughter of a farmer from Hardaspur village in Firozabad. Her story echoed that of Preeti Yadav from Marka village in Banda. Ashish Gautam, a Dalit youth from Deoria, whose parents are daily wage labourers, proudly said, "There is no place for discrimination now. Only talent matters." Rajkumar Yadav, also from Deoria, recalled how people believed land had to be sold to secure a job. "Today I received this letter without spending a single rupee. If my late father were alive, he'd be proud."

Modi made clear India's blood is not meant to be shed, says Shah

1 2 3 4 5 6 Lucknow: Delivering a stern warning to Pakistan, Shah referred to Operation Sindoor and said that "Prime Minister Modi has made it clear that India's blood is not meant to be shed. Anyone who dares to do so will be punished." Citing three major counter-strikes under PM Modi's leadership — surgical strike after Uri, air strike after Pulwama, and Operation Sindoor after Pahalgam — Shah underlined India's new security doctrine of decisive retaliation. He criticised the Congress-led UPA era for its failure to prevent recurring terror attacks in Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Delhi, and Coimbatore, and in Kashmir. "Pakistan tried to attack India thrice during PM Modi's rule. When it tried in Uri, we carried out a surgical strike. After Pulwama, Pakistan met with an air strike, and after Pahalgam, the headquarters of terrorists were razed to the ground in Operation Sindoor," he said, adding that "Operation Sindoor came as a defining moment in India's counter-terror doctrine." Speaking on the promise of eradicating Naxalism by March 31, 2026, Shah said: "In 11 years of Modi govt, the country has gotten safe. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Naxalism was prevalent in 11 states of the country. Now, it is limited to only three districts. Don't forget my words, by the end of March next year, this country will be free from Naxalism." He cited major operations in the recent past, including the neutralisation of CPI (Maoist) leaders like Basavaraju (alias Gaganna) and central committee members Gautam and Bhaskar. "Under Prime Minister Modi, India has risen from being the 11th largest economy in 2014 to the fourth today, and by 2027, it will be the third largest economy. By 2047, we will be number one — and Uttar Pradesh will be a key driver of that growth," he added.

‘BJP protecting land mafias, looting public resources'

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday termed the BJP as a "political gang that shelters criminals and land mafias". Addressing party workers from various districts at the Samajwadi Party state headquarters in Lucknow, Yadav alleged that "the BJP govt in Uttar Pradesh has pushed the state into anarchy and crime and corruption is at its peak". "The BJP is a political gang filled with criminals. It protects land mafias who forcibly capture govt and poor people's land. Every department is steeped in corruption. Loot is rampant in all works. Education, health, electricity, and law and order have been ruined," Yadav said. Accusing the BJP and RSS of hypocrisy, he said: "BJP and RSS talk big about 'swadeshi', but why doesn't the RSS chief ask the Centre to promote 'swadeshi'? The market is flooded with Chinese goods. Why is 'swadeshi' not a priority," he asked. "People will dismantle BJP's fraud in the 2027 elections," he said.
