JNU Adopts 'Kulguru' As Gender-Neutral Hindi Title For Vice Chancellor

JNU has replaced the Hindi term "Kulpati" with "Kulguru" for Vice-Chancellor, aiming for a more gender-neutral title, as proposed by VC Shantishree Dhulipudi Pandit.
JNU Latest News: In an important change, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has decided to replace the Hindi word 'Kulpati" (which means head of an institution) with 'Kulguru" (which means teacher) as the official Hindi title for the Vice-Chancellor. The new term is meant to be more gender-neutral. This proposal was made by JNU Vice-Chancellor Shantishree Dhulipudi Pandit during a recent meeting of the university's working council.
In 2022, while speaking at an event, the Vice-Chancellor emphasised that official titles should always be gender-neutral to prevent any future controversies. She mentioned that an important Executive Council meeting was scheduled for September 14, where she would propose replacing the term Kulpati with Kulguru.
She added, 'When I joined this university, everyone used 'he' instead of 'she' — even on official documents. But I've since made sure that it's changed to 'she' wherever applicable." She also supported the growing demand to replace Kulpati with Kulguru going forward.
JNU's decision follows similar steps taken in other states. In February, the Rajasthan government introduced the Rajasthan Universities' Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025, aiming to replace 'Kulpati" and 'Pratikulpati" (Pro-Vice Chancellor) with 'Kulguru" and 'Pratikulguru" in all state university laws written in Hindi.
The Bill, which was passed in March, explains that the Vice-Chancellor is both the executive and academic head of a university, and that the new terms reflect the traditional guru-shishya parampara (teacher-disciple tradition) from India's ancient education system.
Similarly, in July last year, the Madhya Pradesh Cabinet approved a proposal to adopt the term 'Kulguru" for Vice-Chancellors. The state government said the new title conveys a sense of affinity, affection, and respect, and the move was approved by the Council of State Ministers.

Haryana to rebrand VCs as ‘Kulguru': Mahipal Dhanda
Haryana education minister Mahipal Dhanda on Friday said that the vice-chancellors (VCs) of all government universities in the state will now be referred to as 'Kulguru' instead of the current title 'Kulpati'. Dhanda, an MLA from Panipat Rural, said that an amendment to the University Act will be made to formalise this change. The announcement came during a one-day workshop on internship organised under the National Education Policy, 2020, by Haryana State Higher Education Council at JC Bose University of Science and Technology in Faridabad. Prof Som Nath Sachdeva, VC of Kurukshetra University (KU), was the guest of honour at the event. Dhanda also highlighted that Haryana is the first state in India to fully implement NEP. Prof Sachdeva, said that the university achieved a prestigious NAAC A++ grade and became the first to integrate NEP-2020 in all undergraduate, postgraduate and affiliated college programmes. Additionally, KU launched over 172 internship programmes through its virtual internship program portal (VIP), aligned with NEP. The university also introduced Apprenticeship-Embedded Degree Programs (AEDP) for courses such as BCA, Professional, Event Management, and Medical Lab Technology, starting this academic year.

Murshidabad violence: Charge sheet filed by Bengal police against 13 in father-son murder case
KOLKATA: The West Bengal Police have submitted a charge sheet against 13 people in the father-son double murder case in Murshidabad's Zafarabad violence in April, a senior officer said. The murders of Haragobindo Das (74) and his son Chandan Das (40) took place on April 11 during the Dhuliyan-Suti-Shamshergunj communal violence, amid protests over the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 in the district. The riots left at least three people dead and many injured, besides forcing hundreds to flee their homes. The unrest, which lasted from April 8 to 12, had also caused widespread damage to public and private properties, prompting the Calcutta High Court to order the deployment of Central Armed Forces to restore law and order. "We have submitted the charge sheet before the district court within 55 days of the crime and have named 13 people in it," the official said on Friday. In the aftermath of the violence, the police had arrested over 300 suspected miscreants in connection with over 60 FIRs which were lodged at various police stations in Murshidabad. According to police reports at the Betbona village where the Das family residence was targeted, the attackers broke down the main door, dragged out Chandan Das and Hargobindo Das, and struck them with an axe in the back. A man reportedly stood guard until they died. Reports also noted that in some attacks, the rioters cut off the water supply to prevent fires from being extinguished. Although the details of those named in the charge sheet or the sections slapped on them were not immediately clear, a fact-finding team set up by the high court had named local Trinamool Congress leader Mehboob Alam, former chairman of the Dhuliyan Municipality, to have directed the attack. The team, while submitting its report before the high court on May 21, had also stated "inactivity and absence" of the state police, and added that the men in uniform did not respond to calls from the locals during the violence. The committee documented that "as many as 113 houses were badly affected in the village of Betbona", many of which were set on fire.

The Centre debunked claims that the ₹500 currency note will be discontinued by next year, trying to calm the panic among the people caused by the claim. The panic over the future of currency notes began recently when a video on YouTube went viral over the past few days, claiming that the ₹500 notes will be phased out starting March 2026. The 12-minute-long video, uploaded on a channel named Capital TV and gaining more than five lakh views since June 2, triggered confusion and panic among people. The union government responded to the claims through the Press Information Bureau (PIB) fact-check unit, saying the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has not made any such announcement. The Indian government's official fact-checking agency also advised people not to fall victim to any kind of misinformation and always verify any claims made. " ₹500 notes have NOT been discontinued and remain legal tender. Always verify news from official sources before believing or sharing it," PIB's post on social media platform X reads. The ₹500 notes currently in circulation were introduced after the government announced demonetisation of the old ₹500 and ₹1000 notes in November 2016. The current note is 66mm x 150mm and comes in stone grey colour. The back of it has a picture of the Red Fort, complying with the theme of Indian heritage sites. The current ₹500 notes continue to have their amount written in 17 languages, like all the other notes in circulation. These languages include English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Odia, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had demonetised the previous ₹500 notes, along with the ₹1000 notes, in a televised address on November 8, 2016. The government had billed it as a measure to fight corruption in the country and address the issue of counterfeit banknotes. The news notes came into circulation a couple of days later. The RBI had also introduced the new ₹2,000 currency note during the demonetisation exercise. However, those notes were withdrawn from circulation in May 2023. Despite being withdrawn, the ₹2000 notes remain legal tender.
