Letter from Melania Trump to Putin hand delivered at Alaska summit
President Donald Trump hand delivered the letter to Putin during their summit talks Aug. 15.
The letter, which was shared with USA TODAY, does not specifically mention Ukraine. Trump and Putin's hours long meeting ended with a vague statement to the media in which Putin spoke of an "agreement" and Trump declared "no deal" had been reached to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
The letter does not mention the tens of thousands of Ukranian children taken from land Russia has claimed in the war to the country or Russian-occupied territory without the consent of family or guardians.
"In today's world, some children are forced to carry a quiet laughter, untouched by the darkness around them-- a silent defiance against the forces that can potentially claim their future. Mr. Putin, you can singlehandedly restore their melodic laughter," the letter states.
Moscow has said it moved the children to protect them from a war zone. Many have been put up for adoption.
Ukraine has said the children were taken without consent of their parents or guardians and compared the move to a war crime that meets the United Nations treaty definition of genocide

Former Vice President Kamala Harris is losing political altitude in her own backyard. A new poll suggests California Democrats prefer Gavin Newsom over Kamala Harris in a potential 2028 presidential primary. The Politico survey shows the California governor leading Harris with 25% support compared to her 19% among registered Democratic voters and Democratic-leaning independents in California. Moreover, less than a quarter of California Democrats - just 23 percent - are very excited about the prospect of another Harris presidential bid. The survey shows a clear majority - 58 percent - are 'not excited' about Harris 2028. California Democrats are a bit more enthusiastic for Newsom though 51 percent are still 'not excited.' As Democrats remain leaderless following Joe Biden 's exit from the White House , Newsom has emerged as a leading candidate to unite the party against Donald Trump . Meanwhile, Harris has largely remained largely out of the political fray since losing the general election to Trump in 2024. 'There's affection for her, but maybe less confidence that she would be a strong candidate,' said Jack Citrin, a UC Berkeley political science professor who helped author the poll. The survey does show Newsom and Harris would both be leading contenders in the California primary. However, Harris' inability to garner clear support in her own home state is a doomsday scenario for her chances to grab the nomination. '(Newsom is) in the news everyday. If you think someone is running, you're more likely to support them,' Citrin added. Harris also indicated that she's not looking to jump back into the political machine following her landslide loss to Trump. In July, the former vice president said she will not run for California governor ending months of speculation. Harris has also not consistently opposed the Trump administration compared to other Democratic contenders. In contrast, Newsom has spent most of his remaining term as governor publicly resisting Trump's political agenda, including by redrawing California political districts and opposing ICE immigration raids. Additionally, California under Newsom is suing the administration over Trump federalizing the state's National Guard amid anti-Trump protests in LA over the summer. In the past, Harris has struggled at securing the nomination in competitive Democratic primaries. During the 2020 Democratic election primary, she ended her campaign before voting even began in the Iowa caucus.

Trump kingmaker pours rare praise on the Democrat who's changed most to fight the president
President Donald Trump 's longtime political strategist Steve Bannon poured rare praise on the efforts of California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who is using a cascade of biting X posts to take on President Donald Trump. Newsom's @GovPressOffice account has started trolling MAGA with posts meant to resemble what Trump pushes out on his Truth Social network. Politico reported Wednesday that Newsom and a team of four or five aides manage the account, which has gained more than 250,000 followers and earned more than 225 million impressions since the beginning of August. 'People in the MAGA movement and the America First movement should start paying attention to this, because it's not going to go away,' Bannon told Politico. 'They're only going to get more intense.' Bannon noted that Newsom is 'trying to mimic President Trump.' 'He's no Trump, but if you look at the Democratic Party, he's at least getting up there, and he's trying to imitate a Trumpian vision of fighting, right?' Bannon said. 'He looks like the only person in the Democratic Party who is organizing a fight that they feel they can win.' In recent weeks, @GovPressOffice has posted Trump-like imagery, like the inclusion of Newsom on Mount Rushmore and Newsom being prayed over by the late Hulk Hogan, complete with a halo and angel wings, Tucker Carlson and Kid Rock. 'so nice!' @GovPressOffice commented on the prayerful picture. When a user named Conservative Mike called the image 'very disrespectful and blasphemy' @GovPressOffice chimed back in. Newsom's people highlighted a post from the White House, which had reshared an image from Trump's personal account - an AI image of the president dressed as the Pope. 'oops our bad, sorry. meant to post this,' Newsom's office replied. Newsom's account has also used Trump's traditional all-caps to go on screeds. 'HAS ANYONE NOTICED THAT SINCE I SAID 'I HATE KID ROCK' HE'S NO LONGER 'HOT?' Newsom's account asked Tuesday night. Trump, of course, had sent out a nearly identical message in May about pop star Taylor Swift, who endorsed the president's opponent, former Vice President Kamala Harris, in the 2024 election. Newsom's account continued. 'THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER.' Trump often creates nicknames and mocks liberal media figures. The president has also started ending his Truths with 'thank you for your attention to this matter.' Perino had voiced on Fox that if Newsom wanted a bigger job, 'he has to be a little more serious.' It's no secret that the California governor will likely toss his hat into the ring of 2028 Democratic White House contenders. 'If I were his wife, I would say you are making a fool of yourself,' Perino said on The Five on Monday. Newsom told Fox 11 Los Angeles' Elex Michaelson in an interview last week that his social media strategy changed after Trump 'completely misrepresented the facts' about the Los Angeles fires and then federalized the National Guard to send troops to downtown LA to quell anti-ICE protests. 'Yes, I've changed. The facts have changed. We need to change,' Newsom said. 'This guy is an invasive species,' the governor said of Trump. 'He is completely different. I respect the Republican Party, I married into a Republican family, I have deep love and respect for people I disagree with.' 'He is something altogether different, and he is unmoored; there are no constraints,' Newsom added. Democrats are viewing Newsom's social posts as a bright spot as the party tries to find its way back into power.

The pair did not shake hands at the tense, fruitless meeting. Within three years, their two countries would be locked in Europe's bloodiest war since 1945. Putin forced to 'accept failure' Donald Trump's renewed drive to bring the war to a close could bring a once unthinkable second meeting between Zelensky and Putin to reality. However, in the days since Trump's separate meetings with the two leaders, Moscow has been quick to pour cold water on the prospect. Zelensky, whose first language is Russian and performed in Moscow during Putin's rise to power, has said he is "ready" for a meeting with Vlad. But the very act of meeting with Zelensky could undermine Putin and the entire rationale for his war in the eyes of Russia. Undermines Russia's war aims When the Russian despot ordered tanks to assault Kyiv in February 2022, his warped justification was based on claims that Ukraine was a fake country run by Nazis. Zelensky's Jewish identity makes the claim patently absurd, but for Putin to sit down with him would be a tacit admission of how ludicrous the claim was. For Vlad to meet Volod for talks, they would be sat there as two Presidents of legitimate, sovereign nations - something that the Kremlin's narrative could not possibly abide. And so long as Ukraine remains armed and sovereign, concession to Zelensky would prove Putin's war goals a failure. Russia has shown little indication of making major concessions so far, with the handover of vast swathes of Ukrainian territory to Moscow still Putin's core condition for peace. But to avoid Trump's wrath if talks fall through, Putin will want to shift the blame to Zelensky. Loggerheads over location His suggestion that the trilateral summit be held in Moscow - a predictably unacceptable proposal for Ukraine - could have been a calculated move to weasel out. And had the meeting been held in Russia's capital against the odds, Putin would have hailed it as a diplomatic coup for the Kremlin - and a chance to humiliate Ukraine's war leader. But Vlad's surrogates have taken to the airwaves to dampen expectations around a summit. Russia' Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said a meeting would have to be prepared "gradually... starting with the expert level and thereafter going through all the required steps". Lavrov added today that not involving Russia in discussions around Ukraine's security guarantees is a "road to nowhere". Disputes around the proposed location for the summit have also presented headaches for diplomats. While a Moscow meeting between the pair remains unlikely, other venues have also proved controversial. Suggestions for it to be held in Budapest were lambasted by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. He said: "Not everyone may remember this, but in 1994 Ukraine already got assurances of territorial integrity from the US, Russia and the UK. "In Budapest. Maybe I'm superstitious, but this time I would try to find another place." Switzerland, Qatar and Austria have been floated as other prospective venues.
