SME Corp targets RM1 trillion GDP contribution from MSMEs by 2030
KUALA LUMPUR: The contribution of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to the country's gross domestic product (GDP) is targeted to reach RM1 trillion by 2030, provided efforts to empower the sector are doubled under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).
SME Corporation Malaysia (SME Corp) chief executive officer, Rizal Nainy, said that MSMEs contributed RM652.4 billion to GDP in 2024, up from RM616.6 billion in 2023.
"This annual increase of approximately RM36 billion to RM40 billion could result in an additional RM200 billion over five years if we maintain the current level of effort.
"But if we double our effort, the annual increase could reach RM80 billion, contributing an additional RM400 billion over five years. Combined with the existing base of RM652.4 billion, this would bring us to the RM1 trillion mark," he told Bernama after the 2024 MSME performance press conference here today.
However, he acknowledged that achieving this target requires integrated implementation and a comprehensive scaling strategy, particularly in transforming businesses from micro to small, small to medium, and eventually to large-scale enterprises.
"It is easy to design, but challenging to implement. Nonetheless, more transformative initiatives will be our main focus in the 13MP," he said.
Rizal noted that, in addition to capacity-building programmes and grants such as SME Go Global and Bumiputera Export Promotion initiatives, SME Corp is also actively conducting business matching programmes and organising international expos, such as SME Venture ASEAN 2025.
The expo, scheduled to take place from Oct 16 to 18, is expected to gather over 300 local SMEs ready to export their products to the ASEAN region and beyond.
"We will showcase MSME companies in high-value manufacturing segments, such as medical devices, electrical and electronics, halal food and beverages, cosmetics, tourism, and smart agriculture," he said.
He also highlighted that increasing the participation of MSMEs in public listings will be one of the key drivers in enhancing the sector's value and competitiveness in the future economic landscape.
At the press conference, MSMEs were reported to be strengthening their position as a major player in the Malaysian economy, with a contribution of RM652.4 billion in 2024.
According to official statistics from the Department of Statistics Malaysia, SMEs grew by 5.8 per cent in 2024, outpacing the country's overall economic growth of approximately 5.1 per cent, and non-SMEs, which recorded a growth rate of 4.7 per cent. - Bernama

'This capital constraint causes delays in replanting oil palms,' he said, highlighting how deferred replanting erodes future income stability. Additional barriers include Malaysia's aging smallholder demographic and younger generations' declining interest in palm cultivation. The minister emphasised that replanting must be viewed as a strategic investment, despite the temporary income gap during new trees' non-yielding phase. Penang to roll out second phase of iSejahtera payments from Aug 6
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government will proceed with the second phase of iSejahtera payments for this year via electronic funds transfer to 9,405 recipients from Wednesday (Aug 6). State social development, welfare and non-Islamic affairs xommittee chairman Lim Siew Khim (pic) said the disbursement, amounting to RM1,721,300, reflects a continued commitment to the people's welfare. She said Phase 2/2025 payments will only be made to new applicants who registered before June 30 each year, while applications received after that date will be processed for Phase 1/2026. "For Phase 2/2025, the breakdown and number of recipients are as follows: the senior citizen appreciation schene covers 7,187 recipients totalling RM1,437,400; single mother assistance is for 317 recipients, amounting to RM317,000; "The golden housewife appreciation scheme involves 1,280 recipients totalling RM1,280,000; and aid for persons with disabilities will be given to 621 recipients amounting to RM124,200,' she said in a statement on Tuesday (Aug 5). Lim said the state government has disbursed RM53.83mil to 285,816 recipients across various categories under Phase 1 and Phase 2 from January to July. This included RM41,987,600 for the senior citizen appreciation scheme to 209,938 recipients, and RM1,064,400 for single mother assistance to 10,644 recipients. "Other categories comprise the golden housewife appreciation scheme with RM4,423,100 for 44,231 recipients; RM3,121,600 for 15,608 persons with disabilities; the Anak Emas one-off payment of RM540,200 to 2,700 recipients; and the one-off death benefit contribution totalling RM2,695,000 for 2,695 recipients,' she added. She urged all applicants to promptly update their bank account details to ensure smooth disbursement for Phase 1/2026. Dr M: MACC never said my sons' wealth was illegitimate
KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has responded to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's remarks about his sons' wealth, saying graftbusters have never claimed the money came from illegitimate sources. Dr Mahathir said Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki had previously said the agency was satisfied with the declarations made by his sons, Tan Sri Mokhzani and Mirzan. It was previously reported that Mokhzani had declared total assets amounting to about RM1 billion, with a personal value of RM316 million, while Mirzan declared a total of RM246.2 million in assets, with a personal value of RM120 million. Last week, Anwar was reported as saying that Mokhzani and Mirzan should return their wealth to the government if it was proven to have been acquired through unclear or illegitimate means. In a statement today, Mahathir questioned Anwar's remarks. "Was Azam satisfied without knowing the sources of this wealth?" he said. "The MACC questioned my sons many times, each time for many hours. Did MACC ask about the sources of the wealth as declared?" Mahathir said his sons' wealth comprised property, shares, and liabilities, among other things, acquired over two decades of doing business. "Such properties appreciate over time. The MACC did not state that the sources are 'unclear or illegitimate'. "The MACC and Azam Baki cannot state they are satisfied if the declarations are unclear or illegitimate. "Is Anwar demanding that we sell all our property and give the proceeds to the government? On what ground is he making this demand?"
