According to the latest figures released by the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (naamsa), the BMW brand claimed a dominant 40.6% share of the local premium segment in the first quarter of the year. Staying with the BMW Group, its Mini subsidiary, bolstered by the recent arrival of the new Aceman and Mini John Cooper Works, contributed a 6.2% market share, while BMW Motorrad continued its two-wheeled success story with an impressive 43.9% share in the motorcycle market.
BMW credits this success to the popularity of the locally built X3. The fourth-generation model, built at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn in Tshwane, began production in October 2024 and quickly attracted significant pre-order volumes both locally and abroad. In response, the plant reinstated its third shift to keep up with demand, now producing an average of 110 units per shift. BMW South Africa added that this reflects South Africa's strategic role in BMW's global manufacturing network.

The X3's production ties into BMW's broader electrification ambitions. Globally, the group has delivered over two million electrified vehicles to date — half of which are full battery electric vehicles — and the Rosslyn-built X3 plays a central role in that electric future.

Peter van Binsbergen, CEO of BMW Group South Africa, commented: 'We are grateful for the continued trust and enthusiasm our South African customers and global partners have shown in the BMW Group, supported by our retailer network's firm commitment. Our strong Q1 results, marked by clear segment leadership for BMW and positive momentum across MINI and BMW Motorrad, reflect the compelling appeal of our diverse product range and the passion of our team.'

BMW fever hits Muldersdrift with Beemer fest [PICTURES]
Beemer fest 2025drew scores of BMW enthusiasts to Muldersdrift, where a showcase of both classic and modern BMWs was on display. Car enthusiasts look at a BMW e30 on display at Beemer fest, 1 June 2025. Pictures: Shaun Holland On Sunday, Muldersdrift, in Mogale City, played host to the Beemer Festival hosted by Carcandy Inc. BMW owners and fans had the opportunity to get together and share their passion for the brand. I know BMW purists will tell me that a 'beemer' refers to a bike and not a 'bimmer', which is the car. Organisers of the brand, Carcandy Inc., chose a name that the South African car scene is familiar with, Beemer. There are already hugely successful BMW forums, such as SA Beemer, that have adopted the 'incorrect' name. There was also an opportunity for businesses in the BMW scene to display some of the cars they have worked on. A purpose-built BMW E36 racing car on display at Beemer Fest, 1 June 2025. Jeep Cherokee with electrification after short hiatus
The American market has seen the first glimpse of the all-new Jeep Cherokee, which the automaker claims boasts modern features and hybrid power and will arrive on showroom floors this year. Looking for a new or used Jeep? Find it here with CARmag! Jeep has given the world a first look at the all-new SUV and is thus set to reintroduce the Cherokee in 2025. Like those that have come before it, it plans on referencing its heritage, albeit now with electrified power. This revival aims to fill the gap left since the model's discontinuation in 2023, positioning the Cherokee between the Compass and Grand Cherokee in the line-up. 'The all-new Jeep Cherokee headlines our efforts to deliver more product, innovation, choice and standard content to customers than ever before,' said Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf. Speaking of which, the 2025 Cherokee will offer a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. A plug-in hybrid variant is also in the wings and that will combine a 2.0-litre petrol mill with an electric motor, delivering between 200 and 220kW and an estimated electric-only range of up to 80km. Fuel efficiency is expected to be low, but nothing has been confirmed yet. Related: Review: Omoda C7 SHS Keeping with the Jeep design ethos, the new Cherokee adopts a more squared-off design, featuring Jeep's signature seven-slot grille and LED headlights. Inside, it boasts a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen with Uconnect 5, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an available 12.3-inch digital driver display. Safety features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking. Pricing in its home market will be between $38 000 and $52 000 (approximately R680 000 and R932 000). The 2025 Jeep Cherokee is expected to be unveiled later this year, with sales commencing before the end of 2025. At this time, Stellantis have not shared whether it is on the cards for the South African market, since it is only destined for North America. PODCAST: What closure of Nissan Rosslyn plant means for Mzansi
Nissan is set to cut its financial losses by closing seven of its 17 global factories by 2027. The Nissan plant in Rosslyn outside Pretoria faces closure in the Japanese carmaker's desperate attempt to cut its global losses. The local factory is one of seven global assembly facilities on the chopping block as Nissan plans to reduce its plants from 17 to 10 by 2027. The plant has been in operation since 1966 and apart from direct job losses, its closure will have an indirect impact on two other manufacturers, BMW and Ford, which also have factories in Pretoria. In this week's episode of The Citizen Motoring's Pitstop podcast, we look at what the closure of the Nissan plant will mean for the brand in South Africa. Nissan plant in Rosslyn under-utilised Since the discontinuation of the Nissan NP200, only the Navara bakkie has been built in Rosslyn, leaving the factory underutilised. While there has been talk about the possibility of assembling an SUV alongside the Navara, the company's global restructuring plan, Re:Nissan, indicates otherwise. The manufacturer announced this month that it plans to reduce its global workforce by a further 20 000 jobs on top of 9 000 last year. This follows an R82.2-billion revenue loss for the 2024 financial year. Reports indicate other Nissan plants facing the chop include the Oppama and Shonan plants in Japan, the Santa Isabel plant in Argentina, the Chennai plant in India and one of three factories in Mexico. ALSO READ: Reports claim Rosslyn to be one of Nissan's plants facing closure Patrol, two new SUVs coming The Nissan plant in Rosslyn builds Navaras for the local market and sub-Saharan Africa. If the Rosslyn plant closes, Nissan is likely to import the Navara from Thailand. Nissan South Africa announced in March that the new Patrol and two new Indian-built SUVs derived from Renault products are due to arrive in 2026. Renault and Mitsubishi are Nissan's two alliance partners.
