JPJ: Two Key Improvements To Heavy Vehicle Inspection Procedures Effective June 1

Barnama31-05-2025
PUTRAJAYA, May 31 (Bernama) -- The Road Transport Department (JPJ) today announced two key improvements to the vehicle inspection process at Motor Vehicle Inspection Centres (PPKM), including those operated by Puspakom Sdn Bhd, effective tomorrow (June 1).
JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the move aims to enhance vehicle safety standards while improving system efficiency and service quality for users.
'The improvements involve inspections of tyre tread depth and heavy duty dumper tipper vehicles,' he said in a statement today.
He said the tyre tread depth inspections are in line with current safety standards.
'JPJ requires all commercial vehicles, both goods and public service vehicles, to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the entire surface of the tyre that makes contact with the road,' he said.
Aedy Fadly said that previously, JPJ required Puspakom to ensure at least 75 per cent of the tyre surface met the minimum tread depth requirement during inspections.
'With the new stipulation, any commercial vehicle that fails to meet the requirement will not pass the vehicle inspection,' he added.
He added that JPJ, in collaboration with Puspakom, has also stepped up enforcement to ensure heavy duty dumper or tipper lorries do not have side boards that exceed the approved specifications.
'This is in line with the permit conditions set by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) and the approved Vehicle Technical Plan,' he said.

Sabah Allocates RM600,000 To Assist e-Hailing Workers In Opening EPF Accounts

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- The state government has allocated nearly RM600,000 to assist e-hailing gig workers in opening their Employees Provident Fund (EPF) accounts, said Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He added that a total of 11,109 applications have been received from e-hailing workers for the contributions. "This initiative aims to support those e-hailing workers who have yet to open an EPF account," he said during his speech at the launch of the Sabah Moto Day 8.0 programme at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) today. Hajiji also expressed his delight at the Sabah Moto Day event, which attracted around 60,000 motorcyclists and motorsports enthusiasts from Sabah, Sarawak, and Brunei. "The significant turnout of participants and visitors reflects the enduring appeal of motorsports to the youth and the general public," he said. "I am truly impressed by the support from all participants, regardless of age, race, or religion, united by a common interest. We should see this gathering in a positive light, as it can contribute to our state's economic growth," he added. In his speech at the launch of the Youth Programme in Putatan, Hajiji highlighted the state government's commitment to youth development, pointing to initiatives like grants, training, and innovation and entrepreneurship programmes to provide platforms for Sabah's youth to thrive. He announced that the Youth Programme Grant, amounting to RM300,000, will be distributed to youth NGOs in the Tanjung Aru, Petagas, and Tanjung Keramat constituencies within the Putatan parliamentary area. "This grant exemplifies our commitment to supporting projects and ideas that benefit the local community. I encourage you to make full use of this grant to implement programmes that will benefit youth in your respective areas," he said.

Sun Bus aims to be leading player in Asean EV bus market

JOHOR BAHRU: Sun Bus Tech Sdn Bhd aims to be among Malaysia's top three bus manufacturers within five to 10 years and a leading player in the Asean electric vehicle (EV) bus market. Its chief executive officer, Shyan Phang, said the outlook for Malaysia's EV bus sector remains strong, driven by government plans to procure a further 1,100 units by 2030. 'At present, the EV bus market in Malaysia is fully dependent on government purchases. Last year's tender for 250 units has been concluded, and more orders are expected annually. This presents a big opportunity for local manufacturers,' she told Bernama. The Johor-based company has equipped its assembly facility with EV-specific infrastructure, including dual-gun direct-current fast chargers, portable chargers and special safety containers for battery storage. 'We also use Swiss technology for aluminium bus bodies, which are rust-resistant and can last 15 years to 20 years. The total life-cycle cost is lower than that of steel-bodied buses,' Phang said. Sun Bus Tech plans to expand its EV bus market to Japan, Indonesia and Thailand, with market visits starting this month. The company also works closely with chassis, battery and charger suppliers to improve efficiency, range and passenger capacity. However, Phang said challenges remain, including high acquisition costs, insufficient charging infrastructure and limited range for long-distance operations. 'For EV adoption to truly work here, infrastructure, policy and operator readiness must align. With continued government support, I am optimistic the industry will grow rapidly.' She acknowledged that the main challenges to EV adoption in the Asean region are high costs, limited charging infrastructure and range limitations that do not yet meet the needs of tour or charter bus operators. 'For the tourism bus segment, EV is still not practical. Charging infrastructure needs to be addressed first. But I am confident that with government support, the public EV bus market will continue to grow,' Phang said.

Ops Luxury rolls on against car tax dodgers

Not so fast: Aedy Fadly (left) and senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan showing off one of the luxury vehicles seized during Ops Luxury. JOHOR BARU: Luxury vehicle owners – including celebrities, influencers and successful business people – have been caught driving without a valid road tax and insurance for as long as three years, with some skipping payments of up to RM29,000 in arrears. Road Transport Department (JPJ) director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said 270 vehicles, including Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Rolls-Royces, have been seized nationwide as part of Ops Luxury's operation over the past two weeks. 'In Johor alone, we detained 11 vehicles, including a car with an annual road tax of RM12,000. 'In Kuala Lumpur, the highest tax arrears recorded was RM29,000, excluding insurance,' he told reporters. He added that the operation targeted luxury cars found on the road without valid documents. 'Owners are required to pay all their outstanding road tax, insurance payments and summonses before their vehicles are released. 'Some claim they simply forgot to renew their road tax and insurance policy, but the longest case we found was a vehicle in Kuala Lumpur that went over three years without road tax,' he said. 'How can a car owner forget about renewing their road tax and insurance for such an extended period?' he said, adding that nine of the vehicles seized in Kuala Lumpur were owned by foreigners. Aedy Fadly stressed that the crackdown will continue in all states, including Sabah and Sarawak. 'It is unacceptable that people can spend millions on luxury cars yet refuse to pay for road tax and insurance, which are crucial to protecting other road users. 'Driving without valid documents not only puts the drivers themselves at risk but also other road users as well, in the event of accidents,' he said.
