Nairobi student takes acclaim at tennis awards
Angella Okutoyi, a student-athlete at Auburn University in the US, received the Rising Star award at this year's Tennis Black Awards, presented in association with Dante Talent and held during the HSBC Championships at The Queen's Club, London on the 11th of June, supported by the LTA.
The Rising Star award aims to promote and display emerging player talent in the UK and internationally for players up to 21 years old, with Okutoyi the first Kenyan to win a Grand Slam title at the girls' juniors Wimbledon event when she partnered Rose Marie Nijkamp.
She was one of two winners to receive the Rising Star award, alongside Washington D.C.'s Clervie Ngounoue.
'I'm truly honoured to receive the Rising Star Award from the Tennis Black List,' said Okutoyi. It means so much to be recognised for my journey and to be celebrated among so many amazing black athletes in the sport.
Thank you so much for this award, it truly inspires me to keep pushing forward.'
Tennis Black List is the global celebration of Black and mixed black excellence across the game — spotlighting the unsung, the visionary and the next generation of changemakers.
Taking place in the run up to The Championships at Wimbledon, the Tennis Black List recognises the contributions of individuals and organisations from grassroots level up to the professional game in Britain and internationally.
It follows the example set by the successful and respected Football Black List, created by Leon Mann MBE and Rodney Hinds, and Rugby Black List which have demonstrated the power that celebrating black excellence can achieve in sport.
The event was an opportunity to inspire the next generation in the tennis community, with the commitment shown by the winners on and off the court.
Awards were handed out in ten categories across the evening at the ceremony, with several recipients present at the The Queen's Club.
Founders Anne-Marie Batson and Richard Sackey Addo said: 'This movement is about legacy. Tennis Black List is creating space for Black and mixed-black heritage excellence to be seen, honoured and remembered across all areas of tennis. We are building a global legacy that makes space for what is next.'

Sena Akpo-Young recognised at Tennis Black List Awards
Sena Akpo-Young, 30, started his coaching journey by mentoring his younger brother and was soon noticed by a coach working at his local tennis centre, setting the stage for a coaching career that includes stints with Tennis Scotland, Glasgow Tennis Academy, Glasgow City Council and Broomhill Tennis Club. 'It's an amazing honour to be here,' said Akpo-Young. 'Coming from a mixed-race heritage, there are a lot of barriers in coaching and getting players involved. 'You go to tournaments and clubs and you're always the only black or mixed person in the community so awards like this are great in inspiring others to get involved not only in coaching but tennis in general and that's the main thing. 'It was actually a black coach in Glasgow who said that we were decent in tennis, so we started off in tournaments and I got into coaching because my brother needed a coach on the court and I was there to help him out and I ended up in coaching. 'It's really important to have awards like this that help make people feel comfortable to pursue coaching and playing so they can feel like they can take on anything in tennis and break barriers.' Akpo-Young added: 'It just puts a spotlight to see how amazingly these black coaches and players are doing. I'm not one for the spotlight but it feels really good to be here. Community hero Asante celebrated as Game Changer at tennis awards
Jabilayh Asante, 30, picked up the Game Changer in the Community award at this year's edition of the Black List Awards, presented in association with Dante Talent and held during the HSBC Championships at The Queen's Club, London on the 11th of June, supported by the LTA. Asante founded Back It, a mobile tennis club rooted in community, culture and representation and is also a co-founder of Black Tennis Mentors UK, an initiative focused on creating inclusive spaces and amplifying black voices in the world of tennis. Receiving the award, she beamed: 'It is absolutely amazing. I don't think it speaks volumes to what everyone else is doing in the community. I'm just a small part in this big machine so it's really good to be recognised for what I've done. 'I always played tennis. My mum was quite fascinated with the sport and decided that I should be in it and I fell in love with it as a junior tennis player and as the work I'm doing now is mostly due to my founder which is Arum Akom. 'Both of us had a shared vision to uplift and showcase and recognise individuals who are already doing enough in the sport and create new tennis enthusiasts in tennis. 'Being a Gamechanger in the Community means taking a different route and a different approach to a problem that people are struggling to solve in a way that not been looked at. 'We want to increase inclusion and diverse backgrounds, especially in black communities and now take the next steps.'
