Mexican president rebukes violence in LA protests

MEXICO CITY : Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said today that she did not agree with violent acts committed during the massive protests that have broken out in Los Angeles against immigration raids.
The leader, speaking from her morning press conference, also called on US authorities to respect the rule of law in migration processes.
'It must be clear: We condemn violence wherever it comes from,' Sheinbaum said.
Protests spread on the streets of Los Angeles over the weekend over president Donald Trump's immigration enforcement as groups of protesters, many carrying Mexican flags and signs denouncing US immigration authorities, gathered in spots around the city.
At least 42 Mexicans are being held in four detention centres after recent immigration raids in Los Angeles and four were deported, Mexico's foreign minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente said during today's press conference.
'We will continue our visits to monitor the Mexicans in detention centres in Los Angeles,' de la Fuente said.
He added that the vast majority of Mexicans detained were working when they were arrested.

The Chiapas security secretariat insisted that the operation took place within Mexico. A source from the agency, who asked not to be identified, told AFP the dead were members of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel. In recent months, Chiapas has been shaken by a bloody turf war between the Jalisco New Generation and Sinaloa cartels – the country's two most powerful criminal organisations. Last week, five Chiapas state police officers patrolling the area were killed after they were ambushed by an armed group in Frontera Comalapa, according to the local security secretariat. Criminal violence, most of it linked to drug trafficking, has claimed around 480,000 lives in Mexico since 2006 and left more than 120,000 people missing.

However, the EAIC said in a statement today that investigations found that the loss of the items was not due to negligence by immigration officers. 'Nevertheless, there are several weaknesses in the management and handling of detainees' belongings that need to be rectified to prevent accusations or misunderstandings against officers on duty,' the statement said. Consequently, the EAIC has decided to recommend improvements to the immigration department to ensure the management and handling of detainees' belongings adhere to the existing operating procedures.
