Ahmedabad plane crash: DNA tests identify 87 victims; 47 bodies handed over to kin
Four days after the horrific crash of an Air India plane in Ahmedabad claimed 270 lives, 87 victims have so far been identified through DNA matching and 47 bodies handed over to their families, officials said on Monday (June 16, 2025).
Earlier, hospital authorities on Sunday (June 15) confirmed that former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani's mortal remains were also identified through the DNA test and they will be handed over to his family on Monday (June 16).

Rupani was among the 242 passengers and crew members on board the London-bound Air India flight AI-171 that crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12.
Authorities are carrying out DNA tests to establish the identity of the victims since many of the bodies were charred beyond recognition or damaged otherwise after the plane crash on June 12.
'Till now, 87 DNA samples have been matched, and 47 bodies have already been handed over to the respective families. These deceased were from different parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan, such as Udaipur, Bharuch, Anand, Junagadh, Bhavnagar, Vadodara, Kheda, Mehsana, Arvalli and Ahmedabad,' Additional Civil Superintendent Dr. Rajnish Patel told reporters.
The families of nine victims were awaiting their turn to collect the mortal remains, while the kin of eight other victims, whose DNA has been matched, will arrive in a couple of hours, he added.

Earlier on Sunday (June 15), the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital authorities in a statement said samples of 250 victims, including persons on board the flight as well as those who were killed on the ground, have been collected for identification.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with 242 persons on board crashed into a medical college complex in Ahmedabad moments after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1.39 p.m. on June 12.
While 241 persons on board the aircraft died, one passenger miraculously survived.
Besides, 29 persons are reported to have died in the disaster on the ground, which includes five MBBS students.

New Delhi, A high-level multi-disciplinary committee, set up by the government to look into the Ahmedabad plane crash, on Monday deliberated on various possible theories that could have led to the country's worst air disaster in decades. The panel, chaired by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, listened to the opinions of various stakeholders about the possible causes of the aircrash and deliberated on steps to be taken to check future occurrence of any such accident, sources said. In the first meeting of the panel here, the sources said, the focus of the participants was to analyse the possible causes of the aircrash and how to go about in "formulating Standard Operating Procedures for preventing such occurrences in the future". Since a separate investigation is also being carried out by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau , which is looking into the technical aspects of the crash, the panel discussed about the possible causes and lesson to be taken from it, the sources said. Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu on Saturday said while the AAIB investigation will handle the technical aspects, the high-level committee will provide a holistic, policy-oriented roadmap for future safeguards. Those who attended the meeting on Monday include representatives from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Home Ministry, Indian Air Force, Intelligence Bureau, Gujarat government, Directorate General of Civil Aviation, and Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, among others. The committee is expected to submit its report within three months. Plane crash: Meitei body urges people to cooperate in receiving remains of Manipuri AI crew members
Imphal: The bodies of Air India crew members 26-year-old Lamnunthem Singson and 20-year-old Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma from Manipur, who were killed in the horrific plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, would be brought back to Imphal after DNA identification and completion of other formalities, a leading Civil Society Organisation (CSO) said here on Monday. The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), a apex body of the Meitei community said that according to the information given by the Singson and Sharma families, the mortal remains of the two victims are currently undergoing DNA identification. 'The DNA-based identification is expected to take approximately 72 hours. Once the process is complete, the remains will be brought back to their home state of Manipur,' said COCOMI's information wing convenor Laikhuram Jayenta. Sharma belonged to the non-tribal Meitei community and hailed from Manipur's Thoubal district while Singson is a resident of the tribal inhabited Kangpokpi district, and was from the tribal Thadou community. The COCOMI appealed for cooperation in receiving the mortal remains of the two daughters of Manipur. The body said that the entire state of Manipur has united in mourning their untimely loss. 'Since the tragic news broke, people across the state, especially the youth, have paid tributes through candlelight vigils, prayers, and messages of solidarity, offering comfort and strength to the bereaved families. "In this regard, COCOMI appeals to all sections of society, including CSOs, local clubs, youth bodies, and the general public, to extend full cooperation and support in receiving the mortal remains at Imphal Airport and ensuring their dignified return to their respective families for final rites. "The CSOs also urge the state government and concerned administrative authorities to make all necessary logistical arrangements for the smooth transfer of the bodies to their homes. 'If willing, the families may come forward to receive their daughters at the airport without hesitation. COCOMI is ready to extend any coordination or assistance required during this process,' said Jayenta in a statement. The statement added that as a community, 'let us honour their return and pray for their souls to rest in eternal peace. May the land of Manipur welcome back her daughters with love and pride. And if life grants them another chance, may they return to us once again as the shining daughters of our soil.' Meanwhile, family members of both Singson and Sharma went to Ahmedabad to complete the necessary formalities.
