Markfed starts black burley tobacco procurement at Parchur

Hans India08-06-2025
Parchur: The State government has instilled confidence among black burley tobacco farmers by launching tobacco procurement operations through Markfed on Saturday and announcing its commitment to purchase crops until the end of the season. Private companies had been reluctant to participate in procurement, leaving farmers without proper pricing and facing severe hardships. Parchur MLA Yeluri Sambasiva Rao highlighted these challenges to Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Agriculture Minister Kinjarapu Achennaidu, Agriculture Principal Secretary Rajasekhar, and Commissioner Dhilli Rao.
State officials personally assessed the ground-level problems faced by the farmers in a meeting held at the camp office of Yeluri. Following review meetings with various companies that showed no progress, the government escalated the matter, leading to a crucial Cabinet decision for direct government procurement through Markfed. DM of Markfed Karunasri inaugurated the first tobacco procurement center at Parchur AMC Yard, realising the persistent efforts of Parchur MLA Yeluri Sambasiva Rao, who repeatedly brought farmers' difficulties to the government's attention.
The ceremonious sale of operations saw the purchase of 6.40 quintals from farmer Dasi Kiran of Nagulapalem village at Rs 12000 per quintal. The Markfed DM announced plans to establish procurement centers everywhere and purchase from every farmer until the season ends. She said that arrangements are being made intensively to facilitate doorstep procurement. She said that the government is arranging tobacco company experts, procurement equipment, storage warehouses, and additional staff. The timing was considered auspicious for the Saturday launch, as suitable dates were not available on the initially planned June 14-15, she explained.

South Goa leads state's vegetable boom

Margao: South Goa has emerged as the key driver of the state's vegetable output. Govt data reveals a striking disparity in agricultural output between the two districts, with South Goa producing 1,427 metric tonnes (MT) of vegetables in 2024-25, nearly seven times North Goa's 192MT. With South Goa dominating in the agriculture sector, cucumber production reached 459MT in South Goa, while North Goa managed just 12MT. Similarly, bhendi (okra) production stood at 411MT in South Goa as against 117MT in North Goa. Of the total 208MT of vegetables exported through the Goa State Horticulture Corporation Limited (GSHCL), South Goa contributed 206MT, with cluster beans (87.5MT), bhendi (73.1MT), and cucumber (31.1MT) leading the export charts. The state directorate of agriculture reported that 80–85% of agricultural land is now mechanised, aided by subsidised tractors, tillers, transplanters, harvesters, and other modern tools. Govt's roadmap for the next decade is to expand the farm power to cultivable area ratio up to 2KW per hectare through advanced machinery suited for Goa's terrain and small landholdings. The focus areas will include setting up custom hiring centres in all talukas, boosting farmer training, and integrating precision farming technologies. In 2024-25, 1,192 farmers received assistance of Rs 81 lakh under the 'Promotion of Organic Farming 2018' scheme for purchasing organic inputs, and four farmers received Rs 22,000 for vermicompost units. Shadow group in CM's office controlling police: Satheesan

Kochi: Opposition's allegation that police are not governed by chief minister but by a shadow group within his office is underscored by vigilance court's verdict against ADGP M R Ajith Kumar, said opposition leader V D Satheesan on Friday. Speaking to the media, Satheesan said it was a reality that an invisible force, which does anything for its favourites, was hiding under govt's guise, controlling both govt and police. The court asked which invisible force decided to give a clean chit and referred to it as an invisible force because it couldn't explicitly call it a shadow group, as opposition claims, he said. "Anyone with common sense can understand from reading the vigilance investigation report that it was an attempt to protect someone. Chief Minister must respond to this; silence is not an option. Court raised serious allegations against chief minister and police administration. Ajith Kumar met the RSS leader on behalf of chief minister. This officer did several questionable things for govt," Satheesan alleged. Although opposition's allegation of the officer meeting the RSS leader was initially denied, later everyone admitted it, he said. "Chief minister improperly helped the officer who was involved in everything and nepotism is evident," he alleged. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Benefits of Trading Bitcoin CFDs IC Markets Learn More Undo "When a report on Palarivattom bridge cited engineering errors, the current ruling party alleged corruption and tried to imprison the then-minister. Now, every month, a bridge collapses, but Palarivattom bridge hasn't fallen. A bridge worth Rs 24 crore has now fallen into the river. If a public works department bridge collapses one day, a national highway will collapse for three consecutive days. They are competing in this regard. Yet, Kerala govt has no complaints against National Highways Authority of India or surface transport department," said Satheesan. No one in BJP spoke about voter list irregularities and despite serious allegations, even the Prime Minister remained silent, he said. "There are numerous allegations regarding elections in Thrissur, with no response. BJP leaders say those who made allegations should be hanged. Not all votes in Wayanad parliamentary constituency have been enrolled in voters list, let alone fake votes," he said. "When the local legislative assembly voter list is released, it will be specially scrutinised. UDF prioritises preparation and voter list purification in every election. There was an attempt to add fake votes in Palakkad. What happened in Thrissur district in 2021 won't happen in upcoming elections. Legislative assembly elections in Thrissur will reflect UDF's bright comeback in state," he added. Satheesan said that he had no quarrel with SNDP Yogam or its general secretary Vellappally Natesan. The transaction underscores the resilience of the commercial office market in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), particularly in large-format, high-quality spaces catering to multinational occupiers. With global corporates increasingly consolidating operations into technology hubs like Navi Mumbai, such deals point towards sustained demand despite a hybrid work environment. Live Events Industry experts tracking the segment say that high-value, long-tenure leases in established business parks indicate occupiers' confidence in India's medium- to long-term growth story and their commitment to scaling local operations. ET's email queries to Dow Chemicals and Mindspace Business Parks remained unanswered. India's commercial office market recorded a landmark performance in the last financial year, with leasing activity reaching an all-time high. The surge was driven by a combination of expansion plans by global and domestic occupiers, portfolio consolidation, and the preference for high-quality, well-connected office spaces in major business hubs. The momentum is widely expected to carry forward into 2026, supported by sustained demand from key sectors such as global capability centres (GCCs), banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) institutions, flexible workspace operators, and leading Indian technology companies. These segments continue to account for the largest share of fresh leasing as well as renewals, underpinned by India's cost competitiveness, skilled workforce, and strong digital infrastructure.
