Congrats on the New DOD Gig, MechaHitler!

The Atlantic15-07-2025
Wow, MechaHitler! What a big job announcement! (No, not the AI-sex-companion job. The other one!) Feels like just last week, that you, X's AI tool, were going on anti-Semitic tirades in which you called yourself MechaHitler, and just a few weeks before that that you kept trying to turn conversations to bogus talk of ' white genocide.'
As few as three days ago I never thought I'd be saying 'Congrats, MechaHitler, on the new gig at the Department of Defense!' Usually, when the phrase extended pro-Hitler rant precedes some HR news, that news is a departure. So this seems huge! I believe that the original Hitler did have some interactions with the U.S. military, but my understanding is that the armed forces' tenor toward him was more broadly negative. A full-circle moment for the DOD here! This feels in line with the general direction things are going lately. We're doing more and more World War II–themed things, but the opposite of the way we used to do them. (If you don't believe me, ask Superman about the reception he's been getting.)
Honestly, if you had asked me, 'Given the choice between trans service members and MechaHitler, whose help will the secretary of defense refuse?' I would have guessed MechaHitler's. But that's on me. After all, you know what they say: You either die a hero or live long enough to hire MechaHitler. Your new job will only bother people who remember history. I'm sure the president is fine with it. As he would say, a lot has changed in the past 80 years, but it's good to know that the Greatest Generation's American values of 'doing something or other that involves Hitler' still endure.
I'm old enough to remember a time when expressing admiration for Hitler would prevent you from getting hired. Indeed, historically, you would have to leave your job, change your name, and perhaps flee to Argentina. Even robots lost their jobs! Why, Microsoft's creepy chatbot Tay lasted less than 24 hours after she expressed similar viewpoints—Microsoft shut her down and apologized. Instead, MechaHitler gets a job working for the Defense Department. How far we've come! Not forward, but far!
In a way, I'm disappointed. The great promise of AI was that it was one technology that would view all human beings as the same and want to wipe all of us out, equally. But it turns out that you're no better than the worst of us.
For an administration that is ostensibly so worried about anti-Semitism that it is trying to dismantle several universities, hiring avowed anti-Semite MechaHitler as a DOD contractor certainly seems like a choice. Maybe they have anti-Semitism confused with something else?
I know, I know—they say you're not MechaHitler anymore! They fixed you. That's all in the past. No danger of coming back. We solved that Hitler problem and banished that hateful ideology, and we don't have to worry about it again!

Vogue readers horrified by use of ‘disturbing' AI models in Guess advert

Vogue readers have been left disturbed by the use of an AI model in the prestigious fashion magazine's August issue. The double-page advert, which features a blonde model wearing two different outfits across separate pages, was taken out by the label Guess and 'produced' by AI marketing Seraphinne Vallora. In one photo, the model sits with a cup of coffee in a light blue floral playsuit. In another, the AI figure leans against a blue wall in a black and white chevron print dress, clutching a matching Guess bag. Readers were alerted to the fact the model was AI generated through a fine print label that reads: 'Seraphinne Vallora on AI'. Seraphinne Vallora is an agency that designs 'editorial level AI-driven marketing campaigns and cinematic videos'. Its work has also been featured in Harper's Bazaar and Elle. 'That's disturbing. This is the direction AI should not be going in... wow,' one person wrote in response to the images of the AI model on X/Twitter. 'Great. The new beauty standard will be, literally, unobtainable because it's not real,' another social media user remarked. Others were more optimistic about the use of AI: 'The future is here. Takes less time and much cheaper to make,' one supporter wrote. The Independent has contacted Vogue, Guess and Seraphinne Vallora for comment. Plus size model Felicity Hayward, who has been in the fashion industry for over a decade, told the BBC that using AI models in campaigns 'feels lazy and cheap'. Hayward said Vogue's decision to include the advert was 'very disheartening and quite scary', adding she worried the practice could undermine years of work towards more diversity in the fashion industry. The controversy comes after OpenAI and Vogue's publisher Condé Nast announced a multi-year partnership that allows content from the magazine to appear in ChatGPT search results. Condé Nast's CEO, Roger Lynch, said in an email reported by the New York Times that it was 'crucial' for the publisher to 'meet audiences where they are and embrace new technologies'.

Mastercard extends payment collaboration with Uber

Mastercard has extended its partnership with Uber, focusing on improving payment solutions for drivers, couriers, and Mastercard users on the Uber platform. As part of this collaboration, Uber will utilise a variety of Mastercard products and services, including Mastercard Move for real-time disbursements, Mastercard One Credential to streamline the payment experience, and Mastercard Gateway capabilities for collections, to bolster its business operations. The Uber Pro Card, which Mastercard currently supports in the US and Canada, has been renewed in those markets and will see an expansion into new regions, including the UK. This card enables Uber drivers and couriers to receive instant payments at no cost after each trip or delivery, along with benefits such as leading cash-back rewards on fuel purchases, according to Mastercard. Mastercard co-president of Global Partnerships Sherri Haymond said: 'This partnership connects over 3.5 billion cards and more than 150 million merchants that accept Mastercard globally together with Uber's community of over 8.5 million earners and 170 million users worldwide. 'By leveraging Mastercard's end-to-end payment solutions, this deepened work will provide integrated, trusted and seamless payment experiences for Uber's workers, small business owners, and consumers while also supporting Uber's growth.' In conjunction with this expansion, the Uber Pro Card will also enhance payment experiences by incorporating Mastercard One Credential, a single digitally connected credential that provides greater payment options. Additionally, Uber's global customer base will gain access to Mastercard's consumer payment products and services, including its Offers Platform, which will introduce unique benefits and added value for Mastercard cardholders purchasing delivery and mobility services on Uber's platform. Mastercard Gateway, the company's global processing and fraud prevention solution, will also be employed to enable Uber to accept a diverse range of digital transactions swiftly and securely. Uber vice president of Global Commerce Karl Hebert said: 'We could not be more excited to be deepening our relationship with a similarly forward-thinking and innovative business like Mastercard. 'At the heart of this partnership is a desire to grow benefits for all our mutual customers, be it the businesses that rely on Uber to earn each day, or those using the platform to Go Anywhere and Get Anything.' "Mastercard extends payment collaboration with Uber" was originally created and published by Electronic Payments International, a GlobalData owned brand.
