Los Angeles Sparks riding five-game winning streak as 2nd half of season is underway
The team has won five straight games, including three on the road, heading into Tuesday night's matchup with the Las Vegas Aces. It's only the third time in the past five years that the team has won five or more games in a row. The Sparks had a nine-game winning streak in 2020 and a six-game one in 2023.
Los Angeles has scored 90 or more points in all five games for the first time in franchise history and has put up consecutive 100-point efforts — again a first for the team.
'We've been playing better in the last month, part of that is getting bodies back,' Sparks coach Lynne Roberts said. 'We're playing with more pace, so they're figuring it out. We don't play a traditional style, there's a lot of freedom.'
The Sparks have been getting strong contributions from all five of their starters. Kelsey Plum and Dearica Hamby are averaging 20.8 points each. Rickea Jackson and Azura Stevens are right behind at 18.2 points and 17.0, respectively. Jackson torched the Liberty on Saturday for 20 points in the first-half and hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer.
Los Angeles will also welcome back Cameron Brink on Tuesday. She's been sidelined for 13 months with an ACL injury.
Power poll rankings
Minnesota remained the No. 1 team in the poll with Atlanta jumping up to the second spot. New York was third and Phoenix fell to fourth. Seattle was fifth and Indiana sixth, with Las Vegas next. The Sparks moved up two spots to eighth. Washington and Golden State followed Los Angeles. Dallas, Chicago and Connecticut rounded out the poll.
Clark health update
Caitlin Clark is still sidelined with a right groin injury and there's no timetable yet on her return. Indiana's star guard had a second opinion on the injury when the Fever visited New York last week. The team announced there were no signs of additional damage and that maintaining her long-term health was the focus in her recovery.
Player of the week
Kelsey Mitchell of Indiana was the AP player of the week after averaging 28.3 points, four assists and 1.7 steals to help the Fever go 2-1 last week. Other players receiving votes included Napheesa Collier of Minnesota, Kelsey Plum and Dearica Hamby of Los Angeles and Alyssa Thomas of Phoenix.
Game of the week
New York at Minnesota, Wednesday. It's the first meeting of the season between the participants of the WNBA Finals last year. The Liberty won that series in a decisive Game 5 in overtime.

Kyren Williams, Rams agree to three-year extension
Running back Kyren Williams and the Rams' brass have each talked about the desire to reach a contract extension throughout the offseason. Now, that has come to fruition. According to multiple reports, Williams and the Rams have agreed to a a three-year extension. The initial numbers indicate the deal is worth $33 million with $23 million guaranteed. A fifth-round pick in 2022, Williams has been a key cog in Los Angeles' offense over the last two seasons. In 2024, he rushed for 1,299 yards with 14 touchdowns while also catching 34 passes for 182 yards with two TDs. While Williams missed five games in 2023, he still led the league at 95.3 yards per game, making his first Pro Bowl. He was previously entering the final season of his rookie contract. Williams' new deal could set the stage for Bills running back James Cook to get his second contract and end his current hold-in with the defending AFC East champions.

Kyren Williams reaches 3-year, $33 million contract extension with Rams: Sources
The Los Angeles Rams and running back Kyren Williams have agreed to terms on a three-year, $33 million contract extension with $23 million guaranteed, a league source confirmed to The Athletic on Tuesday. The resolution between Los Angeles and Drew Rosenhaus, Williams' agent, came after Williams reported to training camp and told reporters he planned to practice in full, instead of the sorts of holdouts or 'hold-ins' some players prefer during contract negotiations. 'For me, there was no decision (to hold out or in),' said Williams. 'I play football. That's what I do. That's what I love. For me, it's putting my feet on the ground and continuing to get better.' The Rams have usually gotten extensions done with players before the preseason begins. Williams is entering the final year of his rookie contract. 'He's handled himself like the guy that you guys know. I mean, that's just who he is,' said Rams coach Sean McVay. Williams rushed for 1,100-plus yards in 2023 and 2024, although the Rams' offense struggled to create explosive plays last season. McVay, who added Davante Adams to the offense via free agency this spring alongside a handful of promising rookie skill players, said he wants this year's attack to be more 'versatile.' Williams joked in response that the head coach should play him in the slot as a receiver more frequently. Since the spring, coaches and teammates have expressed admiration for how Williams has handled the process as if no negotiation was happening at all. 'I think that just shows the absolute professionalism of a Kyren Williams,' said veteran right tackle Rob Havenstein. 'There's one thing about Kyren: He loves playing ball.'
