Farewell letter found at home of Austrian school shooter
As Austria mourned the victims of what appeared to be the deadliest attack in its post-World War II history, with a national minute of silence planned in the morning, questions remained about the motive of the shooter.
The 21-year-old Austrian man lived near Graz and was a former student at the BORG Dreierschützengasse high school, in Austria's second-biggest city, who hadn't completed his studies. Police have said that he used two weapons, a shotgun and a handgun, which he appeared to have owned legally.

Police didn't elaborate on investigators' findings in a brief post on social network X. But a senior official who acknowledged that the letter had been found last night said it hadn't allowed them to draw conclusions.

'A farewell letter in analogue and digital form was found,' Franz Ruf, the public security director at Austria's Interior Ministry, told ORF public television. 'He says goodbye to his parents. But no motive can be inferred from the farewell letter, and that is a matter for further investigations.'
Asked whether the assailant had attacked victims randomly or targeted them specifically, Ruf said that is also under investigation and he didn't want to speculate.
He said that wounded people were found on various levels of the school and, in one case, in front of the building.

Officer killed, suspect dead after shooting near CDC in Atlanta
A suspected gunman and a police officer are dead after law enforcement responded to reports of an active shooter near the adjoining campuses of the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and Emory University on Saturday, authorities said. No civilians are believed to have been injured, but several rounds hit buildings on the CDC's sprawling campus, said Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum. The officer who died "received gunfire" during the shooting, DeKalb County Police Chief Gregory Padrick said. Officials earlier said that the officer was critically injured at the scene and taken to the hospital. The shooter was armed with a long gun, and authorities recovered three other firearms at the scene, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to discuss the ongoing investigation. The gunman was found on the second floor of a building across the street from the CDC and died at the scene, Schierbaum said. Authorities said there is no longer a threat to the public. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said the man's motive is not known because investigation is still in the "preliminary stages". Staff at a nearby deli said they heard what sounded like a string of gunshots. "It sounded like fireworks going off, one right after the other," said Brandy Giraldo, the chief operating officer of The General Muir restaurant. Emory University announced in a post on X that the shelter-in-place order on campus had been lifted, but asked people to avoid the area. UK arrests 280 in crackdown on illegal delivery riders

Immigration enforcement officers stopped and questioned 1780 individuals between 20 July and 27 and 280 people were arrested, the interior ministry said, adding asylum support was being reviewed for 53 of those detained. The operation was part of a push by the government to tackle illegal migration which also includes new legal requirements for companies to verify workers' immigration status. Police seized 71 vehicles, including 58 e-bikes, and confiscated £8000 (NZ$18,000) in cash and £460,000 (NZ$1 million) worth of illicit cigarettes. The interior ministry said immigration enforcement teams would receive a £5m (NZ$11.3m) funding boost for the work tackling illegal working. Last month, the government struck a new deal with food delivery firms, including Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat, to share information aimed at preventing illegal working. In the 12 months to July, Britain returned 35,052 people with no right to remain, up 13 percent on the previous 12 months. Ex-US soldier suspected of killing four in Montana bar shooting
US authorities were scouring a mountainous area of western Montana overnight for a military veteran who they say opened fire at a bar, killing four people. Michael Paul Brown, 45, fled The Owl Bar in the small town of Anaconda in a white pickup truck but ditched it at some point, said Lee Johnson, administrator of the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, which is overseeing the case. He urged residents late Friday to stay at home and on high alert. Overnight, authorities released a photo of the suspect, barefoot and shirtless, walking down what appeared to be a flight of outdoor concrete steps. The photo showed Brown, wearing black shorts, fleeing after the shooting Friday, according to the Division of Criminal Investigation.
