Farewell letter found at home of Austrian school shooter
As Austria mourned the victims of what appeared to be the deadliest attack in its post-World War II history, with a national minute of silence planned in the morning, questions remained about the motive of the shooter.
The 21-year-old Austrian man lived near Graz and was a former student at the BORG Dreierschützengasse high school, in Austria's second-biggest city, who hadn't completed his studies. Police have said that he used two weapons, a shotgun and a handgun, which he appeared to have owned legally.

Police didn't elaborate on investigators' findings in a brief post on social network X. But a senior official who acknowledged that the letter had been found last night said it hadn't allowed them to draw conclusions.

'A farewell letter in analogue and digital form was found,' Franz Ruf, the public security director at Austria's Interior Ministry, told ORF public television. 'He says goodbye to his parents. But no motive can be inferred from the farewell letter, and that is a matter for further investigations.'
Asked whether the assailant had attacked victims randomly or targeted them specifically, Ruf said that is also under investigation and he didn't want to speculate.
He said that wounded people were found on various levels of the school and, in one case, in front of the building.

Officer killed, suspect dead after shooting near CDC in Atlanta
A suspected gunman and a police officer are dead after law enforcement responded to reports of an active shooter near the adjoining campuses of the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and Emory University on Saturday, authorities said. No civilians are believed to have been injured, but several rounds hit buildings on the CDC's sprawling campus, said Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum. The officer who died "received gunfire" during the shooting, DeKalb County Police Chief Gregory Padrick said. Officials earlier said that the officer was critically injured at the scene and taken to the hospital. The shooter was armed with a long gun, and authorities recovered three other firearms at the scene, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to discuss the ongoing investigation. The gunman was found on the second floor of a building across the street from the CDC and died at the scene, Schierbaum said. (Source: Associated Press) A white car with an open truck was part of the crime scene and is being searched, he added, but it's still unclear if it belonged to the suspect. Authorities said there is no longer a threat to the public. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said the man's motive is not known because investigation is still in the "preliminary stages". Staff at a nearby deli said they heard what sounded like a string of gunshots. "It sounded like fireworks going off, one right after the other," said Brandy Giraldo, the chief operating officer of The General Muir restaurant. Emory University announced in a post on X that the shelter-in-place order on campus had been lifted, but asked people to avoid the area. By around 6pm (local time), a warning siren repeatedly sounded near the Emory and CDC campuses, as law enforcement vehicles parked throughout the streets. ADVERTISEMENT "Twice this week, deranged criminals have targeted innocent Georgians," Kemp said, referring to the shooting at Fort Stewart. "Each time, brave first responders rushed toward the danger to subdue the shooter and save lives, reminding us of just how crucial they are." Emory's main campus, Emory University Hospital and the CDC are surrounded by affluent wooded neighbourhoods in northeast Atlanta. All three institutions line up along Clifton Rd. The area is hard to access, and notoriously traffic-choked, but on Friday few cars were in evidence. Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr said "we're horrified by the news out of Emory University and praying for the safety of the entire campus community".

UK arrests 280 in crackdown on illegal delivery riders
Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing pressure to show voters he can counter illegal immigration. Photo: STEPHANIE LECOCQ / AFP British authorities arrested almost one in five people they checked in a week-long crackdown on migrants working illegally as delivery riders last month, the government's interior ministry said on Saturday. Immigration enforcement officers stopped and questioned 1780 individuals between 20 July and 27 and 280 people were arrested, the interior ministry said, adding asylum support was being reviewed for 53 of those detained. The operation was part of a push by the government to tackle illegal migration which also includes new legal requirements for companies to verify workers' immigration status. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing pressure to show voters he can counter illegal immigration with support rising for Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage's Reform UK party. "This government is making sure rules are respected and enforced," Border Security Minister Angela Eagle said. As well as the arrests, civil penalty notices were issued to 51 businesses, including car washes and restaurants, which could face fines for employing illegal workers, the ministry said. Police seized 71 vehicles, including 58 e-bikes, and confiscated £8000 (NZ$18,000) in cash and £460,000 (NZ$1 million) worth of illicit cigarettes. The interior ministry said immigration enforcement teams would receive a £5m (NZ$11.3m) funding boost for the work tackling illegal working. Last month, the government struck a new deal with food delivery firms, including Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat, to share information aimed at preventing illegal working. In the 12 months to July, Britain returned 35,052 people with no right to remain, up 13 percent on the previous 12 months. France this week agreed to accept some undocumented migrants who arrive in Britain by small boats with Britain accepting from France an equal number of legitimate asylum seekers with family ties in the country. - Reuters

Ex-US soldier suspected of killing four in Montana bar shooting
US authorities were scouring a mountainous area of western Montana overnight for a military veteran who they say opened fire at a bar, killing four people. Michael Paul Brown, 45, fled The Owl Bar in the small town of Anaconda in a white pickup truck but ditched it at some point, said Lee Johnson, administrator of the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, which is overseeing the case. He urged residents late Friday to stay at home and on high alert. Overnight, authorities released a photo of the suspect, barefoot and shirtless, walking down what appeared to be a flight of outdoor concrete steps. The photo showed Brown, wearing black shorts, fleeing after the shooting Friday, according to the Division of Criminal Investigation. ADVERTISEMENT This photo provided by Montana Department of Justice shows Michael Brown, who authorities say opened fire at a bar, killing four people on Friday, Aug. 1, 2025 in Anaconda, Mont (Source: Associated Press) 'While law enforcement has not received reports of Brown harming any other individuals, he is believed to be armed, and he is extremely dangerous,' Johnson said. Authorities said they would release the names of the victims once all of their families have been notified. 'This is a small tight-knit community that has been harmed by the heinous actions of one individual who does not represent what this community or Montanans stand for,' Johnson said. Anaconda, about 40 kilometres northwest of Butte, is hemmed in by mountains. The town of about 9000 people, was founded by copper barons who profited off nearby mines in the late 1800s. A smelter stack that's no longer operational looms over the valley. Brown lived next door to The Owl Bar, said owner David Gwerder, who wasn't there during the shooting Friday morning. ADVERTISEMENT Gwerder told The Associated Press that the bartender and three patrons were killed and didn't think anyone else was inside. Police and other emergency personnel are seen after a reported shooting in Anaconda. (Source: Associated Press) He also said he wasn't aware of any conflicts between Brown and any of the victims. 'He knew everybody that was in that bar. I guarantee you that,' Gwerder said. 'He didn't have any running dispute with any of them. I just think he snapped.' Brown served in the US Army as an armour crewman from 2001 to 2005 and deployed to Iraq from early 2004 until March 2005, said Lt Col Ruth Castro, an Army spokesperson. Brown was in the Montana National Guard from 2006 to March 2009, Castro said. He left military service in the rank of sergeant. ADVERTISEMENT Brown's niece, Clare Boyle, told the AP on Friday that her uncle has struggled with mental illness for years and that she and her other family members repeatedly sought help. 'This isn't just a drunk/high man going wild,' she wrote in a Facebook message. 'It's a sick man who doesn't know who he is sometimes and frequently doesn't know where or when he is either.' With no sign of Brown in the white pickup or his home, authorities converged on the Stumptown Road area west of Anaconda by ground and air Friday, locking it down so no one was allowed in or out. A helicopter hovered over a nearby mountainside as officers moved among the trees, said Randy Clark, a retired police officer who lives there. The search continued Saturday morning, according to Chase Scheuer, a spokesman for Montana's DCI. As reports of the shooting spread through town earlier Friday, business owners locked their doors and sheltered inside with customers. ADVERTISEMENT The owner of the Firefly Café in Anaconda said she locked up her business after a friend alerted her to the shooting. 'We are Montana, so guns are not new to us," Barbie Nelson said. 'For our town to be locked down, everybody's pretty rattled.'
