BASEL, Switzerland (Reuters) -Germany's Sjoeke Nuesken and Lea Schueller struck in the second half to fire the eight-time champions to the verge of the Euro 2025 quarter-finals on Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over Denmark that left the Danes teetering on the brink of an early exit.
Trailing 1-0 on a night that saw two key VAR decisions go against them, Germany finally got on the scoresheet when they were awarded a penalty in the 56th minute. Nuesken stepped up and calmly slotted her penalty into the bottom-left corner.
Schueller put the Germans ahead 10 minutes later after a failed clearance by Denmark landed at the Bayern Munich forward's feet and she swept it into the far corner.
Germany had celebrated what they thought was the opening goal by Klara Buehl but boos rang around the packed-to-the-rafters St Jakob-Park when it was ruled offside.
That seemed to steal Germany's momentum and Amalie Vangsgaard struck for Denmark in the 26th minute when she took a touch before unleashing a shot from a tight angle to beat Ann-Katrin Berger.
Germany thought they had won a penalty earlier when the referee whistled and pointed to the spot because of a Denmark handball but VAR determined it was outside the box, prompting more boos from the German fans.

Luis Diaz reveals Wirtz advice ahead of Bayern Munich move

LUIS DIAZ said former Liverpool teammate Florian Wirtz assured him he would 'enjoy' a move to Bayern Munich as the Colombian was officially presented by the Bundesliga champions. The German club reportedly paid up to 75 million euros for the 28-year-old, who signed a contract until 2029. Wirtz, heavily linked with Bayern earlier, instead joined Liverpool in June. Despite their brief overlap at Anfield, Diaz revealed Wirtz played a key role in his decision. 'I spoke to Florian a few times, and he told me the Bundesliga is very intense, similar to the Premier League—physical, with packed stadiums,' Diaz said. 'He said I'd enjoy it and wished me luck. I thank him for that.' Diaz becomes Bayern's third-most expensive signing, behind Harry Kane (95 million euros) and Lucas Hernandez (80 million). The winger, however, dismissed concerns over the pressure of his price tag. 'I can't say if I'm worth 70 million. I just want to settle in quickly—that's the most important thing,' he said. During his three-and-a-half years at Liverpool, Diaz won the Premier League, FA Cup, and two League Cups. Last season, he contributed 17 goals and eight assists in 50 appearances as the Reds secured a record-equalling 20th league title. - AFP

German Olympian Laura Dahlmeier's body recovery halted in Pakistan

AUTHORITIES have halted efforts to recover the body of German Olympic biathlete Laura Dahlmeier, who died in a mountaineering accident in Pakistan. Dahlmeier was struck by falling rocks while climbing Laila Peak in the Karakoram range at 5,700 metres. Dahlmeier's management agency confirmed the decision, citing unsafe conditions. The Alpine Club of Pakistan and her family will monitor the situation for a potential future recovery. Colleagues revealed Dahlmeier had previously expressed her wish not to risk rescuers' lives for her remains. German mountaineer Thomas Huber, part of the rescue team, stated, 'We have decided she should stay, because that was her wish.' American climber Jackson Marvell added that recovery would involve extreme risks, both on foot and by helicopter. Dahlmeier's climbing partner, Marina Krauss, recounted the tragic incident, saying, 'I saw Laura being hit by a huge rock and then being thrown against the wall. And from that moment on, she didn't move again.' Krauss was unable to reach her and called for immediate helicopter assistance, but Dahlmeier showed no signs of life. A two-time Olympic gold medallist, Dahlmeier made history at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang as the first woman to win both the sprint and pursuit events. She retired in 2019 at age 25. - AFP

Plans To Retrieve Dahlmeier's Body From Pakistan Peak Abandoned

ISLAMABAD, July 31 (Bernama-dpa) -- Rescuers in Pakistan abandoned plans to retrieve the body of twice Olympic biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier of Germany to respect her last wish and avoid risking more lives, fellow climber Thomas Huber told dpa on Thursday. Dahlmeier, 31, was swept away in a rockfall close to the summit of the 6,069 metres Laila Peak in the Karakoram mountain range on Monday, her management and local officials said. She was declared dead on Wednesday evening after air and ground operations to rescue her from the Laila Peak in the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) region was not successful. bootstrap slideshow Pakistani officials said on Wednesday that rescue teams led by international climbers and local high-altitude porters would launch a new operation to retrieve her body. "When we saw Laura's body it was clear that she (had) left us. As experienced mountain climbers we decided to not go and retrieve her body,' Huber, who's in the GB region, told dpa over the phone. 'They body was in a very difficult terrain which would have meant a great risk for the rescue team,' said Huber, also a German who was part of the team that went up to rescue Dahlmeier. 'We decided to respect Laura's last wish. She didn't want anyone to risk his or her life to retrieve her.' Pakistan's northern region is home to several stunning peaks including some towering more than 8,000 metres high. The region attracts hundreds of mountaineers from all over the world including from Europe every year. Accidents, sometimes deadly, are common during these expeditions especially on K2 and Nanga Parbat, both 8,000 meters peaks.
