Driver killed, passenger severely injured in high-speed Napa County crash
The Nissan 350Z was traveling west on the state highway 'at a high rate of speed' around 8:45 p.m. Friday when the driver lost control, the CHP said in a news release. Approaching a curve in the road, the driver struck the center median to the left of the car and veered toward the right side of the highway, leading the vehicle off the roadway, the CHP said.
The car then became airborne before rolling over several times and stopping on a nearby field, the CHP said.
Officers declared the driver, a 45-year-old Fairfield man whose name has not been released, dead at the scene. His passenger, a 45-year-old Fairfield woman, suffered major injuries and was taken to Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa.
Both of the car's occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, the CHP said. Officers suspect alcohol was a factor.
Shortly after the crash, authorities closed all westbound lanes of Highway 12 west of Kirkland Ranch Road, they wrote in an X post Friday. Lanes were reopened several hours later.

The man ran from the scene, crossed Evergreen Avenue and entered the eastbound 210 Freeway, said Monrovia City Manager Dylan Feik. CHP officers said they received a report just before 10 a.m. that someone had been hit by a SUV on the freeway near Myrtle Avenue. What exactly led up to the man running onto the freeway is unclear. 'Was it intentional? I don't think that is the case, but it ended up with a father, a brother being killed,' said Pablo Alvarado, co-executive director of the National Day Laborers Organizing Network. The Department of Homeland Security told NBC Los Angeles in a statement that Montoya Valdez was not being pursued by federal officials. But Alvarado blamed the federal officials' tactics that, he said, created fear. 'Whether they were chasing him or not, the fact is that when you have operations of this kind, the first reaction of any human being is to run.' Many others in the same Home Depot parking lot also ran, according to people who witnessed or experienced the raid. 'My boss told me to run because immigration was there,' Mattias, a worker who escaped the raid, said in Spanish. 'Some people ran regardless of their immigration status because nowadays, they don't know if undocumented or documented people will be detained.' Mattias said he hurt himself while jumping a fence. DHS said eight day laborers were arrested during Thursday's raid, including nationals from Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. The department called the raid by U.S. Border Patrol a 'targeted immigration enforcement operation,' but did not mention the death of Valdez.

Car of Sacramento mother and baby who were missing for weeks is found underwater
A 36-year-old Sacramento woman and her infant daughter were found submerged under a bridge Sunday morning weeks after they were reported missing following a doctor's appointment, according to a volunteer rescue group and local law enforcement officials. Whisper Owen, 36, and her 8-month-old daughter, Sandra McCarty, were last seen in Atwater on July 15 on their way home from a doctor's appointment. The search ended in tragedy Sunday when Owen and her daughter were found 'pinned under a bridge, underwater,' inside their truck, according to a Facebook post published by Adventures With Purpose, a volunteer dive team that helps search for missing persons. 'She was doing everything she could as a mother to try to save her daughter Sandra,' the post said of Owen. The Fresno County Sheriff's Office confirmed the bodies of both Owen and her daughter were found inside the car, a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer. The vehicle was found near Highway 120 and Victory Avenue in San Joaquin County, the statement read. Fresno police previously said they did not suspect foul play in the disappearances. The California Highway Patrol is investigating how the vehicle wound up submerged, according to the Fresno County Sheriff's Department. Owen and her daughter left Sacramento around 4 a.m. on July 15 and headed south toward Fresno for a doctor's appointment for the baby. Owen stopped at her mother's home to change the child's diaper and then checked in for the appointment at 8:30 a.m., according to Owen's mother, Vickie Torres. Owen visited her brother and returned to her mother's house before 5 p.m. Her silver Trailblazer was detected by a license-plate reader in Atwater, about 65 miles from Fresno, at 8 that night, authorities said. Mother and daughter were last spotted on security footage from a smoke shop in Atwater that captured Owen parking and then changing Sandra's diaper around 7:30 p.m., police said. As family and authorities were searching for the pair, Vickie Torres told The Times: 'It just makes it really hard for me as her mother to shut my brain off and not constantly imagine what could've happened to her. And that beautiful little baby. God, I hope, whatever happened, she's with her mama.'

Two car crash in Solano County kills one person, injures several
One person was killed and several injured in a two car crash on Highway 12 in Solano County on Friday, the CHP said. The crash occurred at 5:03 p.m. when the driver of a tan Toyota Camry tried to pass a big-rig in the eastbound lanes of Highway 12 west of Highway 13 in Rio Vista, according to CHP Sgt. P. Crow. The driver swerved, lost control and entered the westbound lanes of Highway 12 where the Toyota was struck by an oncoming Nissan Pathfinder. The Toyota driver died at the scene and the passengers in the Nissan were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. KCRA-TV reported that the Nissan was carrying four occupants. The highway remained closed as the CHP investigated the crash. Lanes reopened at about 9:30 p.m.
