AC/DC's Smashes Are Uniformly Soaring

Even without releasing anything new, AC/DC still commands an incredible amount of space on the Official Rock & Metal Singles chart in the U.K. The group ranks among the most successful names on the list at the moment, with multiple smashes appearing at the same time. Not only does the Australian rock outfit take up more real estate than almost any other act, but this time around, every one of its tunes manages to climb as sales increase. These decades-old classics are, somehow, still improving after so much time.
AC/DC fills four spaces on the Official Rock & Metal Singles chart, meaning the group controls 10% of the entire 40-position ranking, which looks only at the bestselling tunes in those styles. This time around, all four smashes — which have already spent years on the list — manage to climb at least one spot, with most surging multiple rungs at once.
"Thunderstruck" is AC/DC's highest-rising hit on the Official Rock & Metal Singles chart this week, which is usually the case. The title climbs to No. 5, growing by one position from its previous placement at No. 6.
Fellow time-tested winners "Back in Black," "Highway to Hell," and "You Shook Me All Night Long" also climb ever so slightly, appearing this frame at Nos. 21, 24, and 34, respectively.
Among that bunch, the least successful track is "You Shook Me All Night Long," which is still regarded as a generation-defining win. The tune is the only one of the four that has yet to reach No. 1, as it has thus far stalled in the runner-up spot.
It has also spent the least amount of time on the tally, with just 457 frames to its credit. That sum would be historic for almost any other act, but when it comes to AC/DC, the other three charting successes on the Official Rock & Metal Singles list have all passed 600 frames.
"Thunderstruck" is the only one of AC/DC's songs that manages to appear on more than one tally this week. As it climbs on the Official Rock & Metal Singles chart, it also advances on both the Official Singles Sales and Official Singles Downloads lists, coming in at Nos. 66 and 62, respectively. In both instances, sales increased so much that "Thunderstruck" was able to push forward by more than 10 spots.

It seemingly takes a village to put together a cheer team, especially one as iconic as this one. Moving all the way from Tehran, Iran, to Powell, Ohio, is not an easy thing to do. But all 6,474 miles were worth it for one family of three, so long as the daughter got to follow her dreams. And it was in Ohio that she was able to pursue her passion for acting, falling in love with playwrights like Lorraine Hansberry and Arthur Miller, eventually landing roles both on Broadway and television. And now, she's nominated for Tony Award. Actress Tala Ashe, known for her roles in Broadway theater and on television shows like "Smash," "As the World Turns" and DC's "Legends of Tomorrow," was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play. Sanaz Toossi's "English" premiered in 2022. The play is set in Karaj, Iran, and follows four adult classmates as they attempt to learn the English language. Cultural assimilation, language and identity are central themes in the play. "English" was also nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play, making Toossi the first Iranian-American to receive the nomination. For Ashe, playing Elham — an unapologetically bold character working on her fifth attempt to learn English — was especially meaningful to her own experiences as an Iranian-American and her efforts to land roles that represent diverse voices. "I'm pulling from my mother and my grandmothers and my ancestors to play her," Ashe said. "It's always a fight for accurate and nuanced representation, so in some ways, getting to 'English' also feels like a full journey of unlocking that door." Being nominated for a Tony Award, after over a decade of playing roles in the entertainment industry, means everything to not just Ashe, but her parents, Shoreh Elhami and Javad Ashrafi, as well. "This nomination also just represents the culmination of a lot of heartbreak, a lot of hard work, and all my work, in some way, is as much for them as it is for me," Ashe said. With the support of her parents, Ashe was able to pursue acting, landing key roles on television shows like "Covert Affairs," "Law & Order," "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" and "30 Rock." However, she said theater is her first love. "I realized that a lot of what I'm seeking is about community, about building art together with people. And often, on television, you don't have the time and circumstances to do that," Ashe said. Ashe spent five years as Zari on DC's "Legends of Tomorrow" — the show's first Muslim-American superhero — where she did build that sense of community she had been seeking, but making her way back to theater for "English" had been a full-circle moment to not just act, but thoughtfully represent diversity. "Seeing stories about people that are different than us, especially excellently told stories, expands our minds, our empathy," Ashe said. "I love being an artist. I love being an actor, and I've realized that it's also important for me to recognize what I represent." Ashe and her co-star, Marjan Neshat, are the first Middle Eastern actresses nominated for a Tony Award for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play. The director behind the new documentary "Depeche Mode: M" links the cultural significance of the Mexican holiday celebrating the Day of the Dead with the music of the electro-synth-pop band, which is indisputably a New Wave pioneer. It's an ambiguous concept, but also an intriguing one. At the June 5 world premiere of "M" at BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, Frías was joined by Depeche Mode's David Gahan and Martin Gore for a boisterous screening of the 95-minute film that often felt as much like a live concert as the one(s) depicted on screen. "One of the things about a Depeche Mode concert is it's a communal experience," Gahan said during a Tribeca Film Festival panel after the showing. "Watching ourselves (perform) is kind of painful, to be honest … I can't explain what happens when you perform. It's a strange, spiritual experience communicated through music." More: Billy Joel's documentary digs deep into past with poignancy – but he's 'not finished yet' Depeche Mode's music connects to Day of the Dead That experience was filmed during a three-night stand at Mexico City's Foro Sol Stadium in 2023, where a total of more than 200,000 fans pilgrimaged to watch the sleek, massive production that showcased Gahan twirling around the stage like Stevie Nicks in a three-piece suit, Gore sharing his keyboard and guitar skills as well as his angelic voice and songs from four decades of synth-drenched creativity. Frías' arty approach toggled between black and white and color video and many of his camera shots – a closeup of the heel of Gahan's boot, the quick cut to a cluster of fans waving white-gloved hands during "Never Let Me Down Again," as per tradition – confirmed how much he wanted this documentary to be different. In between songs including the moody "My Cosmos is Mine" and "Don't Say You Love Me," both from 2023's "Memento Mori" album ("remember, you will die"), voiceovers from fans and lines from poetry are presented in Spanish. The serene scene of a swamp shifts to an overhead drone shot of the concert with Gahan executing mesmerizing calisthenics during the somber ballad "Speak to Me," his resonant voice cutting through a cloud of synthesizers. A lesson about the Aztec guardian of the underworld prefaces Gore's stunning rendition of "Soul with Me," another of Frías' thoughtful connections between song and spirit. How did Depeche Mode honor Andy Fletcher? Longtime fans of Depeche Mode will relish the vibrant performances of classics including "Enjoy the Silence" – Gahan grinning at Gore as he picks out the song's identifiable opening guitar notes – and a muscular "Personal Jesus." But they will likely most appreciate the dedication to original member Andy Fletcher, who died of an aortic dissection in 2022 at age 60. Dot-matrix printouts of Fletcher's face bob throughout the crowd as Gahan bends his fingers to form eyeglasses and holds his arms overhead in a mask-like pose. As the band performs "World in My Eyes," the video screens blanketing the back of the stage illuminate with Fletcher's photo, a sweet tribute to a New Wave innovator. While the theme of mortality is threaded throughout the film, it is also balanced with hope, appreciation and more than a dab of realism. As one fan asks rhetorically, "Thinking something will last forever isn't good, right?"
