Lyon's Matic, Le Havre's Hassan given two-game bans after concealing Ligue 1's anti-homophobia badge
Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Nemanja Matic and Le Havre striker Ahmed Hassan have each been handed two-game bans with a further two matches suspended after they concealed Ligue 1's anti-homophobia insignia on their shirts, the French top-flight said.
Serbian Matic, 36, had put on a tape over the anti-homophobia badge when he came on as a substitute during Lyon's 2-0 home win over Angers on May 17 which was the final day of the Ligue 1 season. His Lyon contract is set to expire at the end of the month.
Egyptian Hassan, 32, also received the same punishment, with the incident having occurred during Le Havre's 3-2 win at Strasbourg.
"In addition, the committee proposed to the player - who immediately accepted at the meeting - that he take part, within six months, in a campaign to raise awareness of the fight against homophobia in football..." Ligue 1 said in a statement on Thursday.
Ligue 1 had planned for players to wear rainbow-coloured symbols on shirts or armbands and display messages in stadiums as part of its annual awareness drive.
Yet participation has been uneven in recent years, with some players citing personal or religious reasons for opting out. REUTERS

Hong keeps focus on World Cup after successful end to fraught campaign South Korea coach Hong Myung-bo sought to focus on his team's preparations for next year's World Cup rather than the fraught campaign that eventually ended with the country celebrating qualification for an 11th consecutive finals. A 2-0 victory over Iraq in Basra on Thursday confirmed South Korea's progress as one of two automatic qualifiers from Group B of Asia's preliminaries, and came 11 months on from Hong's controversial reappointment as head coach. "It's an opportunity for us to test young guys who may be able to play at the World Cup next year," Hong said of Tuesday's remaining qualifier against Kuwait in Seoul. "We won't have too many opportunities like this. It's one thing for those guys to watch from the bench, and quite another for them to play." Ex-national team captain Hong returned for a second spell in charge in July last year after a series of caretakers had been appointed following Juergen Klinsmann's underwhelming tenure, the German leaving in the aftermath of South Korea's Asian Cup elimination. Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said the tragedy occurred 0.3 nautical miles west of Tanjung Harapan. The recovered remains include the boy, Darren Gan, and two others, Mr Cheu Son Hin, 50, and Mr Fong Yong Sen, 29. The child's parents, Mr Gan Hon Tat, 32, and Ms Careen Man, 29, from Klang Utama, are still missing. The sixth passenger, Mr Alvin Chang Yan Qin, 17, was rescued alive. 'Selangor MMEA is currently conducting a search and rescue operation for the couple,' said Captain Abdul Muhaimin, adding that the Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) Johor Bahru activated the rescue mission at 5.15pm on June 6. A search and rescue operations centre has been set up at the Selangor MMEA office to coordinate efforts. The Marine Police, MMEA, and Fire and Rescue Department are involved in the operations. Capt Abdul Muhaimin stated the Fire and Rescue Department would continue rescue work as Mr Gan and Ms Man may still be in the boat, which is partially covered in mud. 'The boat has been towed to the Selangor MMEA's floating jetty,' he added. Initial investigations suggest the boat may have capsized after losing control. 'Maritime Malaysia reminds the public to prioritise safety aspects when engaging in activities at sea. 'The use of safety jackets, monitoring weather conditions, and expertise in handling boats are essential considerations. 'Maritime Malaysia urges the public to pray for the safe rescue of the missing persons,' he added. Capt Abdul Muhaimin urged anyone with information about maritime emergencies to contact the Selangor MMEA operations centre at 03-3176 0627 or call the emergency line at 999. Meanwhile, Sekinchan Fishermen Association adviser Chia Tian Hee recently told The Star that the sea has become unpredictable. He noted that big waves now appear without warning, causing havoc for fishing boats. 'In the past, waves would start small, warning fishermen that the sea was about to become choppy, allowing them to return ashore. 'But now, big waves emerge suddenly and aggressively. There have been instances where fishing boats capsized, but luckily there were no fatalities,' Mr Chia said.
