Ahmed Hassan leaves Le Havre

Ahmed Hassan (32) has left Le Havre AC, just six months after joining the club on a free transfer. The Egyptian forward's contract at Rio Ave expired last summer. Without a club for several months, he pitched up at Le Havre in January. Signing a short-term deal, he was brought in to secure the club's top-flight status. Having accomplished that mission, he has now made a swift departure. After arriving at the Normand club, Hassan scored three goals in 16 appearances, earning the club seven points in the process. Those goals were crucial as Le Havre secured their survival in the top-flight in the final minute of the final day of the Ligue 1 season. Officialising his departure, HAC said that the Egypt international had 'completed his mission' at the club by helping them reach their objective. Two of his goals came in slender wins over RC Lens and Lille OSC, the other coming in a 1-1 draw against AS Monaco. Hassan is now once again a free agent. GFFN | Luke Entwistle

Over 200 Kurds jailed in Afrin for ethnic, political reasons: Local official

Also in Syria US envoy says Kurds 'slow' in talks with Damascus Syrians battle devastating western forest fires Syrian firefighters face challenges as wildfires rage UK re-establishes ties with Syria A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - More than 200 Kurds are currently being held in prisons across Afrin, northwestern Syria, due to their ethnicity and perceived ties to the Kurdish-led administration in northeast Syria (Rojava), a local official told Rudaw on Monday, warning of continuing rights violations in the Kurdish-majority enclave. Ahmed Hassan, head of the local council for the Kurdish National Council (KNC/ENKS), stated, 'At least 200 Kurds are imprisoned in Afrin. Being Kurdish is the main reason, and most of the accusations relate to supposed connections with the [Democratic] Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES).' He emphasized that these individuals are being detained because of 'politicization and their Kurdish identity.' Hassan noted that although the situation in Afrin is 'gradually improving,' it has not yet returned to normal. He said the region is currently controlled by authorities and factions affiliated with the new Syrian leadership. 'Alongside the Damascus government, several armed groups also maintain control and make independent decisions,' he added. He also noted that armed groups have seized more than 50 homes belonging to Kurds in a predominantly Shiite district near Afrin. These groups are refusing to return the properties and, in some cases, are demanding payments ranging from $1,000 to over $2,000, Hassan claimed, adding that 'the houses have been emptied, but the groups refuse to give them back to their Kurdish owners.' Afrin, a Kurdish enclave in northwestern Syria, was taken over by Turkey and its allied Syrian armed groups in 2018. Hundreds of thousands of Kurds were displaced, with many relocating to the nearby Shahba region. Meanwhile, families displaced from other parts of Syria were resettled in Afrin. Since the takeover, international organizations have documented numerous human rights violations against Afrin's Kurdish population, including kidnappings, killings, looting of agricultural land, destruction of olive groves, and the imposition of arbitrary taxes on farmers. Regarding the return of Arab settlers, Hassan said the process is 'underway,' but noted that 'more than 20 percent of the settlers have yet to return' to their original hometowns. He added that while the return of displaced Kurdish residents is also ongoing, 'significant obstacles remain.' Soran Hussein contributed to this article.

Revealed: Mohamed Salah set to miss SEVEN games - including Liverpool title showdown - due to AFCON next season

Mohamed Salah could miss as many as seven games next season due to the Africa Cup of Nations. AFCON is scheduled between December 21 and January 18, during which time Liverpool have six fixtures, with a trip to Tottenham the day before it begins. Last time Egypt only made it as far as the last 16 but Salah sustained a hamstring injury at the tournament which kept him out until February 13, 2024. That meant he missed additional fixtures against Chelsea, Arsenal, and Burnley, with the Reds losing their Gunners assignment 3-1. This time, provided Egypt reach the final, Salah will miss league games against Tottenham, Wolves, Leeds, Fulham, Arsenal, and Burnley, as well as an FA Cup third-round tie. Even if Egypt crash out in the group stages - an unlikely scenario given they are one of the favourites - he would miss the first three games. The timing of AFCON and attitudes towards the tournament are often an uncomfortable subject for players, who feel pressured to devalue their international duties. Andre Onana missed the first game of the 2023-24 tournament because he agreed to play an extra game for Manchester United and experienced travel disruption. Meanwhile, Salah faced criticism from within Egypt after suffering a hamstring injury for them and flying back to Liverpool for treatment. Egypt's legendary former midfielder Ahmed Hassan claimed Salah should have stayed to support his team-mates, but the superstar's agent insisted treatment in Liverpool was the best route and that 'influencers' were piling on for clout. Liverpool fans may be particularly concerned about how they could fare against Arsenal given their close encounters last season. The pair drew 2-2 twice in the league, with Salah scoring a late equaliser in the first match at the Emirates. Liverpool have not fared terribly while missing players due to AFCON before. They missed Salah and Sadio Mane in the 2021-22 season for six games, but went undefeated during this period as Senegal reached the final to beat Egypt. Salah, 33, retains a burning ambition to win AFCON after heartbreak in the final in 2017 and 2021. Last year he said: 'I would love to win it [AFCON], absolutely I would love to win it. I just said I want everything possible but this one still not yet, it will happen somehow that's what I believe. Whatever I believe, I achieve, so it will happen. Sooner or later, it will happen.'
