Revealed: Mohamed Salah set to miss SEVEN games - including Liverpool title showdown - due to AFCON next season

Daily Mail18-06-2025
Mohamed Salah could miss as many as seven games next season due to the Africa Cup of Nations.
AFCON is scheduled between December 21 and January 18, during which time Liverpool have six fixtures, with a trip to Tottenham the day before it begins.
Last time Egypt only made it as far as the last 16 but Salah sustained a hamstring injury at the tournament which kept him out until February 13, 2024.
That meant he missed additional fixtures against Chelsea, Arsenal, and Burnley, with the Reds losing their Gunners assignment 3-1.
This time, provided Egypt reach the final, Salah will miss league games against Tottenham, Wolves, Leeds, Fulham, Arsenal, and Burnley, as well as an FA Cup third-round tie.
Even if Egypt crash out in the group stages - an unlikely scenario given they are one of the favourites - he would miss the first three games.
The timing of AFCON and attitudes towards the tournament are often an uncomfortable subject for players, who feel pressured to devalue their international duties.
Andre Onana missed the first game of the 2023-24 tournament because he agreed to play an extra game for Manchester United and experienced travel disruption.
Meanwhile, Salah faced criticism from within Egypt after suffering a hamstring injury for them and flying back to Liverpool for treatment.
Egypt's legendary former midfielder Ahmed Hassan claimed Salah should have stayed to support his team-mates, but the superstar's agent insisted treatment in Liverpool was the best route and that 'influencers' were piling on for clout.
Liverpool fans may be particularly concerned about how they could fare against Arsenal given their close encounters last season.
The pair drew 2-2 twice in the league, with Salah scoring a late equaliser in the first match at the Emirates.
Liverpool have not fared terribly while missing players due to AFCON before.
They missed Salah and Sadio Mane in the 2021-22 season for six games, but went undefeated during this period as Senegal reached the final to beat Egypt.
Salah, 33, retains a burning ambition to win AFCON after heartbreak in the final in 2017 and 2021.
Last year he said: 'I would love to win it [AFCON], absolutely I would love to win it. I just said I want everything possible but this one still not yet, it will happen somehow that's what I believe. Whatever I believe, I achieve, so it will happen. Sooner or later, it will happen.'

The Premier League circus is back, but after a summer of splurges who'll be laughing when the curtain comes down in May?

IT'S opening night at football's multi-billion dollar circus and spending has gone through the big-top roof. So despite an almighty spree of his own, Arne Slot believes his Liverpool side will face tougher competition than ever if they are to retain their Premier League title. 7 7 7 7 England's biggest five clubs have already shelled out more than £1billion between them this summer, in a whopping total spend of £2.1billion — or £2.5bn including deal add-ons. And as the defending champions roll up to Anfield to face Bournemouth, kicking off another season for the greatest show on Earth, the Dutchman expects the title battle to be fiercer than ever. Liverpool's imminent signing of Giovanni Leoni would take their summer outlay to around £300m — with deals for Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi still possible. But world champs Chelsea have spent another quarter of a billion, followed by Manchester United (£200.5m), Arsenal (£181.8m) and Manchester City (£150.1m for a total of £324m in the calendar year). And Slot said: 'The reason why it's so difficult lies mainly with the fact there are so many that can win the league over here. 'To win it once is very special, if you can win it twice in five years like us — and City did even better — then that is unbelievable. 'And probably this year's going to be harder than any year before because every team brings in new players. Our main competitors definitely did as well. 'The challenge in the Premier League is always the teams. We start with Bournemouth — the most intense in the league in terms of running and also playing style — and after that it's Newcastle and Arsenal. 'That sums up this league and the challenges we have.' If winning the title is a serious achievement, retaining it is far tougher — only Pep Guardiola's City, Sir Alex Ferguson's United and Jose Mourinho's Chelsea have won back-to-back Premier League crowns. 7 Slot would be walking among giants if he wins a second title in two seasons. And while the signings of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez provide a major platform, he still wants Newcastle striker Isak as well as Guehi, the England defender who skippered Crystal Palace to beat the Reds in Sunday's Community Shield. Perennial runners-up Arsenal are in a major recruitment drive too — adding Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Cristhian Mosquera ahead of a critical campaign for Mikel Arteta. As ever, Chelsea have bought in bulk — with strikers Joao Pedro and Liam Delap joining wingers Jamie Gittens and Estevao Willian, left-back Jorrel Hato and midfielder Dario Essugo at a club powered by its own brand of chaos. Guardiola's City — four-in-a-row champions before last term — have made four big signings in Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri and James Trafford, to add to their January quartet. With United's attacking overhaul bringing Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in, never before have all of England's major clubs seen such change. Europa League winners Spurs have spent £100m-plus, with more to come — with even promoted Sunderland well over nine figures. The league is increasingly competitive. The Liverpool-City duopoly — when two near-perfect teams needed close to 100 points to take the crown — is over. No longer does one defeat spell disaster, yet fewer fixtures are a formality for any title-chasers. With Liverpool making so many changes, Slot faces a different pressure to when he inherited Jurgen Klopp's squad last summer. He said: 'I took over a team with only two weeks to prepare due to the Euros and Copa America. 'This year we've brought in very good, intelligent players who need to integrate. Bournemouth will bring a big challenge but everyone is looking forward to it.' Roll up, roll up — tonight's the night we begin to find out if they all have more money than sense. 7 7

Man Utd set price to sign Sporting star as Ruben Amorim sanctions bid

Manchester United are lining up a bid for Sporting captain Morten Hjulmand in case they miss out on first-choice midfield target Carlos Baleba. United were thought to be near enough done in the transfer market after spending almost £200m on Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. The Red Devils do not have the spending power of some of their Premier League rivals after missing out on Champions League football. That meant United were expected to focus their attentions on outgoings up until the transfer deadline and offload as many members of Ruben Amorim's bomb squad as possible. However, it emerged last week that the Manchester giants had expressed interest in a stunning deal for Brighton midfielder Baleba. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. United's midfield lacked energy and bite last season and Baleba is seen as an ideal addition to the Old Trafford squad following his impressive form on the south coast. Manchester United remain interested in Baleba despite learning that Brighton will demand at least £100m to part ways with the Cameroon international. The chances of a summer deal still appear relatively slim given the numbers involved and as a result United are looking at other options. They have been repeatedly linked with a move for Amorim's former Sporting captain Hjulmand since the manager's appointment back in November. According to The Sun, Manchester United will step up their interest in the Denmark international should they fail in their mission to sign Baleba and are preparing a £50m move. Amorim pushed to sign Hjulmand from Lecce in 2023 and made him his captain as he emerged as a key player for his title-winning Sporting side. Hjulmand's leadership skills and 'monster mentality' impressed Amorim and the United boss is ready to sanction a move to secure a reunion in Manchester. Hjulmand has a release clause worth £68m but it is claimed Sporting would be willing to sell for around £10m less that figure if achievable add-ons were agreed. The 26-year-old scored in Sporting's opening win over Casa Pia on Friday night. Baleba remains United's first-choice target for the time being but it remains to be seen if they are able to come up with a deal. More Trending There is also the threat of a rival move from Manchester City, who have also expressed interest in signing the Seagulls star. Discussing the speculation surrounding Baleba at a Brighton fans' forum last week, club chairman Paul Barber said: 'There's always going to be interest in our players. 'Manchester United have not been in touch with me. Speculation is speculation. Carlos is a fantastic talent. 'We hope he'll be here for years to come – but its subject to the dynamics of the football world, which isn't always predictable.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Arne Slot gives £116million signing Florian Wirtz one piece of advice on how he can reach the level of Liverpool great Mohamed Salah ahead of the German's Premier League debut

Liverpool manager Arne Slot believes his new £116million signing Florian Wirtz has nothing to prove and has given him one piece of advice on how to get to the level of Reds talisman Mohamed Salah – plus Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Wirtz signed from Bayer Leverkusen in June for what could rise to a British transfer record, having registered 31 goal involvements last season and 38 the year before. And his new boss Slot says staying fit and looking after his body is what will separate him from being a good player to one of the all-time greats of the Premier League. Asked if the German will take Liverpool to another level, Slot said: 'That is something I can only answer in the upcoming years. Everything we expect is very positive but between expecting and realising something is different. 'Why are Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and Mo Salah so highly regarded? Because they are always fit. Every single game they are fit and that is something that Florian first has to show in a league like ours. If he is able to stay fit then our fans will see great moments.' Wirtz is expected to be the fulcrum of Liverpool's side from a No 10 role this season and has been combining well with Salah in pre-season. He is keen on the sports science aspect of the game and has had just one long-term injury in his career. 'He is a different profile to what we have,' Slot added. 'He might be a bit similar to Harvey (Elliott). But Harvey didn't play that much. He is a different profile to (the other midfielders). That is what we wanted – to bring a different profile in rather than adding something that we already had. 'And then it is very positive that we could bring in such a highly regarded player but I think Liverpool has always been able to bring in these kinds of players.' Slot also reckons that the best attribute of Wirtz, 22, is his mentality. 'He might be young but he has already won a lot,' said the boss. 'Factually we can see him as a young player but in terms of his experience, he is not. He won the league and cup in Germany, and played for his country numerous times. 'And his mentality is maybe his biggest strength. You might think, 'Hmm, are you serious, have you seen how creative he is?'. He does not get distracted at all by the transfer fee. Good players always find a way to play well.'
