Revealed: Mohamed Salah set to miss SEVEN games - including Liverpool title showdown - due to AFCON next season
AFCON is scheduled between December 21 and January 18, during which time Liverpool have six fixtures, with a trip to Tottenham the day before it begins.
Last time Egypt only made it as far as the last 16 but Salah sustained a hamstring injury at the tournament which kept him out until February 13, 2024.
That meant he missed additional fixtures against Chelsea, Arsenal, and Burnley, with the Reds losing their Gunners assignment 3-1.
This time, provided Egypt reach the final, Salah will miss league games against Tottenham, Wolves, Leeds, Fulham, Arsenal, and Burnley, as well as an FA Cup third-round tie.
Even if Egypt crash out in the group stages - an unlikely scenario given they are one of the favourites - he would miss the first three games.
The timing of AFCON and attitudes towards the tournament are often an uncomfortable subject for players, who feel pressured to devalue their international duties.
Andre Onana missed the first game of the 2023-24 tournament because he agreed to play an extra game for Manchester United and experienced travel disruption.
Meanwhile, Salah faced criticism from within Egypt after suffering a hamstring injury for them and flying back to Liverpool for treatment.
Egypt's legendary former midfielder Ahmed Hassan claimed Salah should have stayed to support his team-mates, but the superstar's agent insisted treatment in Liverpool was the best route and that 'influencers' were piling on for clout.
Liverpool fans may be particularly concerned about how they could fare against Arsenal given their close encounters last season.
The pair drew 2-2 twice in the league, with Salah scoring a late equaliser in the first match at the Emirates.
Liverpool have not fared terribly while missing players due to AFCON before.
They missed Salah and Sadio Mane in the 2021-22 season for six games, but went undefeated during this period as Senegal reached the final to beat Egypt.
Salah, 33, retains a burning ambition to win AFCON after heartbreak in the final in 2017 and 2021.
Last year he said: 'I would love to win it [AFCON], absolutely I would love to win it. I just said I want everything possible but this one still not yet, it will happen somehow that's what I believe. Whatever I believe, I achieve, so it will happen. Sooner or later, it will happen.'

Manchester United are lining up a bid for Sporting captain Morten Hjulmand in case they miss out on first-choice midfield target Carlos Baleba. United were thought to be near enough done in the transfer market after spending almost £200m on Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. The Red Devils do not have the spending power of some of their Premier League rivals after missing out on Champions League football. That meant United were expected to focus their attentions on outgoings up until the transfer deadline and offload as many members of Ruben Amorim's bomb squad as possible. Liverpool manager Arne Slot believes his new £116million signing Florian Wirtz has nothing to prove and has given him one piece of advice on how to get to the level of Reds talisman Mohamed Salah – plus Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Wirtz signed from Bayer Leverkusen in June for what could rise to a British transfer record, having registered 31 goal involvements last season and 38 the year before. And his new boss Slot says staying fit and looking after his body is what will separate him from being a good player to one of the all-time greats of the Premier League. Asked if the German will take Liverpool to another level, Slot said: 'That is something I can only answer in the upcoming years. Everything we expect is very positive but between expecting and realising something is different. 'Why are Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and Mo Salah so highly regarded? Because they are always fit. Every single game they are fit and that is something that Florian first has to show in a league like ours. If he is able to stay fit then our fans will see great moments.' Wirtz is expected to be the fulcrum of Liverpool's side from a No 10 role this season and has been combining well with Salah in pre-season. He is keen on the sports science aspect of the game and has had just one long-term injury in his career. 'He is a different profile to what we have,' Slot added. 'He might be a bit similar to Harvey (Elliott). But Harvey didn't play that much. He is a different profile to (the other midfielders). That is what we wanted – to bring a different profile in rather than adding something that we already had. 'And then it is very positive that we could bring in such a highly regarded player but I think Liverpool has always been able to bring in these kinds of players.' Slot also reckons that the best attribute of Wirtz, 22, is his mentality. 'He might be young but he has already won a lot,' said the boss. 'Factually we can see him as a young player but in terms of his experience, he is not. He won the league and cup in Germany, and played for his country numerous times. 'And his mentality is maybe his biggest strength. You might think, 'Hmm, are you serious, have you seen how creative he is?'. He does not get distracted at all by the transfer fee. Good players always find a way to play well.'
