VCSC prepares for upcoming Indiana high school diploma changes

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Indiana State Board of Education has approved of a re-designed high school diploma. Here in the Wabash Valley, Vigo County School Corporation is already preparing its students for the upcoming change.
Back in December, the State Board of Education approved of the new high school diploma changes. Instead of multiple diplomas, Indiana will only have one. Plus, students can earn a 'seal' based on their path choice of enrollment, employment, or enlistment.
Readiness seals are designed to be permeable, allowing students to update their plans and pivot if goals or interests change with time.

The Vigo County School Corporation say they are committed to preparing students for college and careers, from the earliest grades to prepare them for making choices about the new diploma. With that, communication is key.
'Our schools been working in the last three months to really start rolling out some information to get it ready,' said the Deputy Superintendent of Vigo County School Corporation, Dr. John. Newport. 'The Indiana Department of Education is calling it a 'high school redesign.' It's really intended to offer more flexibility and opportunities for students in the long haul.'
Indiana leaders have spent the last year seeking out feedback through the state and learning from schools that have tried to blend the experiences of K-12, higher education, and the workforce. This built the foundation of a new diploma that they believe will remove barriers to students' futures.
'We want every student as a K-12 entity to graduate from high school with the tools they need to succeed. We've also been working for many years of enhancing our curriculum,' said Newport.
Indiana schools have until 2028 to implement the changes but can opt-in starting next school year.
'It's not just our ultimate goal for (students) to walk the stage, it's a 13-year event to get there,' said Newport.

Miami Pilot Attempting To Fly Around World Dies In Indiana Plane Crash That Nearly Took Out A Gas Station

Despite several notable exceptions recently, commercial flights are still incredibly safe. Small planes, on the other hand, crash much more frequently. Sadly, yet another small plane crash has claimed the life of Anh-Thu Nguyen, a Miami-area pilot who last year became the 10th woman to fly solo around the globe, CBS News reports. Nguyen was reportedly attempting to do it again when her plane went down Wednesday morning in Greenwood, Indiana, about 15 miles outside of Indianapolis. She was 44. Currently, it isn't clear what caused the crash, but according to CBS4 Indianapolis, witnesses say "the small plane began making a series of strange aerial maneuvers before it slammed into a grassy ditch." As one witness Amanda Landwerlen told the news outlet, "The plane was kind of banking and they started to lower and then pulled up and started to roll, and I thought it's like a sky show and they went straight into the ground." Another witness, Frank Williams said, "She was banking hard left to go north, and all of the sudden, the nose dove and she went into a spin and just went straight down." As tragic as Nguyen's crash is, it could have also been much worse. When her plane went down, it reportedly hit the ground only a few feet from a gas station. Thankfully, though, it landed far enough away that it didn't end up causing a secondary explosion or claim any other lives. "This could have been a lot worse if they went into the gas station, but there's no indication of how the crash occurred," the Greenwood Fire Department's Tyler Swardson told CBS4. Originally born in Vietnam, CBS News reports Anh-Thu Nguyen moved to the U.S. at 12, where she went on to attend Purdue University, earning her undergraduate degree in Mathematics and her master's degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics. In 2018, she founded Asian Women in Aerospace and Aviation, a nonprofit with a goal "to encourage, empower and engage the next generation of Asian female pilots, aerospace engineers and STEM professionals." In 2020, she also founded the Dragon Flight Training Academy. Nguyen had reportedly logged more than 4,000 hours of flight time and had previously worked as a commercial pilot for Amazon. Last year, she became the 10th woman to ever fly around the world, making 25 different stops as she circled the globe. Following the news of Nguyen's death the AWAA released a statement saying: We are heartbroken by the sudden loss of our dear friend, founder, mentor, and leader, Anh-Thu Nguyen, who passed away in a tragic accident during her solo journey around the world. Anh-Thu was an inspiring pilot, instructor, and advocate for girls and women in aerospace, engineering, and aviation. She lived with boldness, curiosity, and drive. She came from humble beginnings in Vietnam to becoming a beacon of hope to many. Those wishing to honor her legacy may make a donation to the 501c3 nonprofit "Asian Women in Aerospace and Aviation" in her name; we will use the funds to continue her dream of helping young girls pursue their dreams and a scholarship in her name. Riverfront Parkrun goes ahead despite pop-up picnic area disruption

A pop-up picnic area in Newport has put the Riverfront Parkrun's problem-solving skills to the test. Parkrun organisers have been faced with the unintentional disturbance after it appeared underneath the landmark Steel Wave sculpture on the banks of the River Usk late in July. Its appearance drew concern from runners taking part and those involved with the race, whether as event staff or spectators. This temporary picnic area overlaps with the Parkrun start line, leading to the cancellation of last week's run on July 26 while organisers tried to find a safe solution to proceed with the weekly event. The new starting area will be in operation for the next six weeks (Image: NQ) The site will be in place until early September and is part of a city centre enhancement led by Newport Now, in partnership with the council. While the area is intended for residents to enjoy outdoor leisure, its placement has prompted frustration over an alleged lack of planning and consultation. Despite the cancellation of last week's run, this week's run went ahead with some minor changes that will stay in place for the next six weeks. The start area now looks entirely different outside the new picnic area. The start line has been narrowed to avoid the instillation, cutting the area that runners will pass through as they begin the race in half. To manage this narrowing of the course, a starting funnel has been put in place so that the crowd of runners can stay safe in the smaller area. Runners are given a safety briefing before the start of the race, to ensure that all participants are clear of the change to the route. Runners are organised by finish time to ensure they stay safe in the funnel (Image: NQ) Organised by anticipated finish time, this funnel will help keep runners safe from hazards as they embark on their weekly run along the river Usk. This site is part of a public space that is regularly used for events in the city centre. This small route adjustment has established that the Parkrun and picnic area are able to exist together in future years. The Argus approached Riverfront Parkrun and Parkrun UK for a statement on the matter but they did not respond.
