Notts County name Gagliardi as head of football
Notts County have appointed Roberto Gagliardi as their new head of football.The Italian replaces Richard Montague, who left Meadow Lane in February to become director of football at Championship club Swansea City.Gagliardi was formerly head of European scouting, then head of football operations at Portsmouth before working as head of recruitment at Turkish club Goztepe and taking a seat on the board.Notts joint owners Chris and Alex Reedtz said in a statement: "Following Richard Montague's departure, we have taken some time to evaluate the club's structure and identify the qualities that would be most valuable to us in his replacement."Roberto will lead on all aspects of our recruitment and negotiations with agents and clubs – areas he is highly skilled in thanks to the experience he's gained and the notable people he's learned from throughout his career."He has an excellent understanding of the game, both tactically and in terms of player recruitment, shares our way of thinking and comes highly recommended by people we trust."Gagliardi will take up his new role on 1 May just before County's final game of the season against Doncaster Rovers as they look to win promotion to League One.They are fourth in the table, just two points outside the automatic promotion spots."I'll be coming into the role at the busiest time of the year. It's a really important period for setting strong foundations for both the transfer window and the season ahead," he said."In terms of attracting players, Notts County has many strong selling points. It's very difficult for clubs, even those from higher divisions, to compete with our brand, history, city, fanbase and project."

T100 Triathlon champion Marten Van Riel knows he must improve his performances if he is to defend his world title later this year. The Belgian was left disappointed with a sixth-place finish in San Francisco two weeks ago but has an immediate chance to make amends in Vancouver this weekend. Missing out on the podium last time out was a blow to Van Riel's end of season objectives following a third-place finish in Singapore to open his season strongly. But the 32-year-old is confident some training time on Vancouver Island has been the perfect way to prepare ahead of the third races of the series. 'I had a really good start to the season in Singapore, I was very happy with the result but San Francisco was a bit below my expectations,' he said. 'I expected more of myself in that race. I just felt like I didn't have it there. That whole week I didn't feel super good, I was a bit stressed out because I didn't have my luggage. I didn't feel comfortable. 'It's something I have got back through 10 days in Victoria, I have fully recovered and then had a couple of sessions to sharpen everything up. I'm feeling good and hoping for a better day. 'We had a little preparation camp for 10 days there and yesterday flew in by water plane, so I made a good entry. I love the vibe here, it's very relaxed and chill.' The 32-year-old currently sits second in the overall rankings, so another strong finish in Vancouver will leave him well-placed for an assault at the overall title in Qatar in December. 'We're just two races in, so we're not very far but slowly the rankings are going to start shaping up,' he said. 'I am probably going to miss both of the European races so this one is important for me to set myself up for a good end of the year and defend my title from last year. 'I'm not thinking too much about the title, I am just trying to string together the best results I can. 'Sixth place in San Francisco is probably just on the edge of being good enough if you want to challenge at the top of the rankings, so I am going to have to do better than that.' The Parkhead club are said to have beaten Belgian side Anderlecht to the signing of Nygren, who scored 16 goals in 32 games for Nordsjaelland last season. Nygren appears set to become Brendan Rodgers' second summer signing, and Gren believes he has what it takes to succeed at Parkhead, much like several of his Swedish predecessors: "I am not surprised that there is interest in him now and I think Celtic would be a good next step for him," he said. "I know all about Scottish football. I played against Rangers in the Champions League with Grasshoppers. "I have also been to Scotland to visit places like Glasgow and Edinburgh on holiday. "It's a nice country and I have watched a lot of the football there. "Moving to Britain would be a sensible next step and he would also have the chance to play European football at a high level. "You look at Celtic's history and there have been a lot of Swedish players who have done well there. "Henrik Larsson, Johan Mjallby and Mikael Lustig have all done extremely well and maybe Benjamin can be the next one. "The style of Scottish football really suits Swedish footballers and I am sure he would do well at Celtic."
