Auburn practicing without injured Johni Broome

Reuters01-04-2025

April 1 - Johni Broome sat out practice Tuesday and will be held out again Wednesday as the Auburn Tigers complete on-campus preparation for their game with the Florida Gators at the Final Four in San Antonio.
Broome, the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, briefly left Auburn's regional final win over Michigan State with an elbow injury. Tigers coach Bruce Pearl said Broome likely would be on the floor for parts of practice on Thursday before the Tigers hit Texas and follow Florida with a scheduled in-stadium workout scheduled for Noon ET on Friday.
Assistant coach Steven Pearl said on The Next Round podcast Tuesday that Broome would "continue to rehab the seven different things that he injured on that one play. ... As the week progresses, hopefully his status does as well."
Broome was fully capable of climbing a ladder and cutting down the nets after the South Region final, but he appeared to injure his left leg on the same play that taxed his right elbow.
Pearl said there is "no injury" to Broome's elbow after testing but does have "stress" in the joint.
Broome scored 25 points with 14 rebounds in Auburn's 70-64 win over Michigan State on Sunday in Atlanta. He's averaging 18.7 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.1 blocks per game this season and is viewed as the only Naismith National Player of the Year contender with a chance to challenge Duke's Cooper Flagg for first-place votes.
In four NCAA Tournament games last month, Broome averaged 17.3 points and 13.3 rebounds per game.
Broome had 18 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and two blocks in Auburn's 90-81 home loss to Florida on Feb. 8.

Zach Eflin shuts down Tigers as O's claim late blowout

June 12 - Ramon Urias smacked a two-run home run early and starting pitcher Zach Eflin worked into the seventh inning as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the visiting Detroit Tigers 10-1 on Wednesday night. Jordan Westburg homered in a seven-run eighth inning to join Adley Rutschman, Jackson Holliday, Gunnar Henderson and Urias with two hits apiece for the Orioles, who had lost three of their previous four games. Eflin (6-2), who has won three consecutive starts, limited the MLB-leading Tigers over 6 2/3 innings. He allowed one run on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk. The teams meet in the rubber game of their three-game series Thursday night. Tigers starter Casey Mize (6-2) lasted 5 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on eight hits. He walked two and struck out seven. Eflin held a no-hitter until two outs in the fourth inning, yielding only a walk to Zach McKinstry to that point. Riley Greene's single was the first hit off Eflin. Keegan Akin, Bryan Baker and Gregory Soto completed the combined five-hitter. Urias followed Mullins' leadoff single in the third with his third homer of the season to open the scoring. Colt Keith doubled in Detroit's first run with a seventh-inning double, but the Tigers didn't convert further with runners at second and third base with one out. Wenceel Perez was thrown out at the plate on pinch hitter Dillon Dingler's grounder to third. Rutschman led off the seventh with a double and scored on Henderson's single for a 3-1 lead. Baltimore tacked on another run on Mullins' eighth-inning double. Mullins later scored on Beau Brieske's wild pitch before Ryan O'Hearn's two-run single and Westburg's three-run homer. The Orioles squandered other scoring chances, leaving eight runners on base. Orioles left fielder Colton Cowser, playing in just his second home game of the season, went 1-for-5. Not only did he have a two-month stint on the injured list, his first 10 outings of the season came in road games. --Field Level Media
