The seventh grader "always had a smile on his face," said his aunt Heather Breeden
His aunt said Jordan went with his older sister to see the flood waters for himself, then slipped and was carried away by the waterFamily and friends are remembering Jordan Sims for his charisma and cheer.
Jordan, the 12-year-old boy who went missing during a flash flood in Virginia on May 13, is believed to have died in the flood after search crews found a body around 8:45 a.m. the next morning, per a statement from Albemarle County Fire Rescue. Following the heartbreaking news, Jordan's aunt Heather Breeden told The Washington Post that her nephew was a funny, athletic and happy young boy.
"People could be in a bad mood, and he would just come in there and he would cheer you up," Breeden told the outlet. "He always had a smile on his face."
A seventh grader at Henley Middle School in Crozet, Virginia, Jordan loved basketball and golf, video games like Fortnite and Call of Duty and R&B and rap music.
Jordan's classmates observed two minutes of silence in his memory, said Breeden's daughter, who is in the same grade as her cousin. Breeden got a glimpse of a poster honoring Jordan, which simply read "Rest in peace, Jordan," and had been signed by many classmates.
"Jordan was a valued member of our Henley community. He was bright, kind and deeply loved by classmates and staff alike,' wrote Henley Principal Rick Vrhovac, per the Post. 'His loss is devastating, and we know it will affect every member of our school family in different ways.'
Breeden said Jordan had dismissed his grandmother's warning about the floodwaters and went with his older sister to see it for himself. It was then that Jordan slipped, Breeden continued, and the boy fell into the water and was carried out by the water before his sister could help him.
After searching on her own on Tuesday, May 12, Breeden joined the search crew on Wednesday morning. She told the Post that Jordan's body was found roughly 500 meters from where he first slipped.
'The rescuers … they did their job, they tried,' Breeden said in an interview, per the Post.

Albemarle County Fire Rescue Chief Dan Eggleston said in a statement that though the body had not been positively identified as of May 14, the discovery was a "heartbreaking outcome."
"Our hearts are with the Sims' family and loved ones," said Eggleston. "We are incredibly grateful to our local and regional partners who supported this search effort with urgency, professionalism and care."

400-pound monster alligator named Pepe ‘detained' for ‘being a dinosaur without proper papers' in NC

The scales of justice came for Pepe. Cops detained – and rescued – a monster 10-foot alligator they nicknamed Pepe the Gator sunbathing on a busy road in North Carolina and 'charged' him on suspicion of being a 'dinosaur.' 'Witnesses say he was just chilling and snapping, clearly ignoring the 'no loitering or lounging on roadways' sign,' the Onslow County Sheriff's Office wrote in a playful press release last week. 'Pepe has been cited for Suspicion of Being a Dinosaur Without Proper Papers, Public Loitering with Intent to Sunbathe, and Obstructing Traffic.' Advertisement 3 Deputies and a wildlife officer straddle Pepe the Gator, who was playfully charged with being a dinosaur without proper papers as he sunbathed on a North Carolina highway last month. Onslow County Sheriff's Office The responding deputies and officers from the NC Wildlife Resources Commission who got the call on May 25 managed to safely remove Pepe, but not before posing for pictures where they straddle him like rodeo riders. 'He was 10 feet long, 400 pounds. He was an absolute monster,' Trevor Dunnell, spokesman for the Onslow County Sheriff's Office told the Post Thursday. Advertisement 'They did a fantastic job of wrangling him.' To indicate the scale of the gator, Dunnell pointed out how, in the picture, even with three grown men on top of him, Pepe's still not covered. 'The picture really doesn't do it justice, I mean 10 feet … 10 feet is a basketball goal, that is a massive creature,' he said. Although 10 feet seems big, it's nothing compared to the largest gator on record – 14 feet and 3 and a half inches. Advertisement Deputies and wildlife officials used a towel to cover Pepe's eyes — eye contact is what triggers the animal's notorious death roll, Dunnell explained — and electrical tape to seal his mouth shut. 'It was definitely some MacGyver stuff they had to use,' he said. 'He may not have a good time during the removal, but he was playfully enough about it later to understand that, 'Hey, man, you gotta do what you gotta do.'' 3 Deputies and a wildlife officer in North Carolina successfully relocated Pepe the Gator. Onslow County Sheriff's Office Dunnell said the office received blowback from people online wishing the cops had just left Pepe alone. but Dunnell was quick to point out that leaving the reptile on the side of the road could have posed a hazard not only to residents but also to the gator. Advertisement 'You never know what can happen when kids are running around,' he said. 'And the gator could wind up in the middle of the road. It could hurt drivers but it could hurt him, too.' Dunnell said he hopes to see body camera footage of Pepe's apprehension. The two deputies and the wildlife official in the picture are happy to be riding him, Dunnell said, adding that if authorities encounter another Pepe, they'll know who to call. 3 The sheriff's office dropped all charges against Pepe the Gator, who was playfully suspected of being a dinosaur without his proper papers, after he was returned to his natural habitat. Onslow County Sheriff's Office 'But some deputies were absolutely not fine,' he said. 'When they got back, they were saying, 'You're not going to catch me on that thing. I'm not going to go anywhere near it!'' Pepe was far from home, and Dunnell suspects that it was a hot day and he was looking for a good spot to bask. 'How far he wandered is anybody's guess,' he said. 'It must've been several miles at least.' After further investigation, Dunnell said, they declined to charge Pepe. Instead, they drove him to a boat ramp at nearby Camp Geiger, a satellite facility of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. Advertisement 'I think we've touched base with the gator and let him know we dropped the charges,' he joked. 'Pepe's back to his normal routine, he's hanging out near the beach and lounging in his natural habitat, hunting for his food and looking for a girlfriend.'

Lawsuit tied up in litigation for family of H.S. football player who suffered traumatic brain injury

The attorneys for a former high school football player who suffered a traumatic brain injury say the school that recruited him failed to provide him with the proper care when he got hurt during a game. Channel 2's Michael Seiden reported the lawsuit was first filed in 2022, but it remains tied up in litigation. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The allegations are against Pace Academy. In the lawsuit, they claim that the school did not have an ambulance on site. They also accuse the team doctor and trainers of failing to provide the proper care during the life-threatening situation. Considered a rising star on the gridiron, former Pace Academy player Jordan Sloan once had dreams of earning a Division I scholarship to the University of Miami. In September 2020 during a homecoming game, Jordan took a big hit that left him with a traumatic brain injury 'He doesn't swallow. He can't swallow, so we have to give him food and water through a feeding tube,' said Jasmine Jamieson, his mother. ONLINE FUNDRAISER: Jordan Sloan Recovery Fund Jordan is unable to talk, and he can't get out of bed without the help of this machine. His mother has also become his full-time caretaker. She starts each day by getting him dressed and brushing his teeth. 'I made a promise to him very early on, within the first month, that I would do whatever I needed to make sure he got his life back,' Jamieson said. But life hasn't gotten any easier. In 2022, Jordan and his family filed a lawsuit against Pace Academy, accusing the private school of committing medical malpractice. In the complaint, Jordan's lawyers accused a team physician, athletic trainers and an EMT of failing to provide him with the proper care. They also claim that no one provided him with oxygen until the paramedics arrived 45 minutes after the initial hit. 'This was a complete safety failure on the part of Pace Academy,' said the family's attorney, Lindsey Macon. 'They walked into the training room and found Jordan Sloan on the training room table, not breathing, and not a single person touching him, nobody bagging him, nobody rendering any sort of care,' Macon said. Jordan's legal team said it is calling on Pace to take responsibility for its actions. 'Give him and his family some semblance of decency and a respectable life,' said Drew Findling, an attorney for the family. A spokesperson for Pace sent Channel 2 the following statement: 'We are deeply saddened by the tragic injury suffered by our alumnus, Jordan Sloan. He and his family are known to and loved by our school community, and since Jordan's injury, the Pace Academy community has partnered with Jordan's family to support his recovery. We continue to pray for a full recovery. Due to ongoing legal proceedings, we are unable to comment further at this time.' [SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]
